Returning Leverock fires Bermuda to comfortable win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsICC/Ian Jacobs

After being benched for Bermuda’s first two matches at the WCL Division Four for disciplinary reasons, star allrounder Kamau Leverock reminded Jersey of his talent with a devastating 66 off 43 balls to set up a 58-run win over Jersey at Kinrara Oval.Returning to the scene of Saturday’s training-session tirade that earned him a two-match ban, Leverock punished Jersey’s bowling attack after they had sent Bermuda in at the toss. Leverock, and his opening partner Okera Bascome, each hit a four and two sixes off Cornelis Bodenstein and Anthony Hawkins-Kay to take Bermuda to 32 for 0 in two overs. Leverock brought up a 28-ball fifty in the 10th over, off Charles Perchard.Leverock’s onslaught against Jersey’s bowlers was reminiscent of a similar shellacking two years ago, at the last Division Four in Los Angeles, when he smashed 137 off 111 balls.Elliot Miles eventually ended the opening stand at 52, but Leverock and captain Terryn Fray put on another 58 for the second wicket to take Bermuda to a commanding 110 for 1 in 15 overs.Bermuda’s scoring rate fell dramatically after Leverock’s dismissal, going at under four an over the rest of the way, until they were bowled out for 242 in the final over. The left-arm spin trio of Miles, Ben Stevens and Nat Watkins combined to take eight of the ten wickets. On what has been a good batting surface at the Kinrara Oval through the tournament, Jersey stuttered in reply, falling to 32 for 3 inside the Powerplay. Stevens once again provided a major contribution with the bat to give Jersey hope, top-scoring with 42 off 52 balls at No. 3. But Jersey were hurt by a number of batsmen failing to convert their starts in the middle and lower order.Offspinning allrounder Dion Stovell, who took the new ball and dismissed Peter Gough in the fourth over, came back to spin out the tail, finishing with 4 for 33 as Jersey were bowled out in the 43rd over for 184.

Arsenal: Thomas Partey injury update ahead of Everton

There has been a fresh update on Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey after he was forced to miss their 3-1 victory over Manchester United last Sunday.

Latest Arsenal news

Mikel Arteta's side are so far keeping chase with last season's treble-winners Man City; winning three out of their opening four league games whilst remaining unbeaten.

Arsenal dropped their first points of the new Premier League campaign at home to Fulham a fortnight ago, courtesy of a last gasp equaliser from midfielder Joao Palhinha.

However, Arteta's men were soon back to their imperious best with their latest win over United at the Emirates Stadium, just prior to the international break.

Goals from Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus cancelled out Marcus Rashford's early opener for the away side; setting them on their way to a crucial three points.

One player forced to miss the encounter was Partey, though; coming after the Ghana international star picked up an injury in training just before the match.

mikel-arteta-2

The 30-year-old was one of Arsenal's mainstay players during their title push last season, and has continued in that same vain over 23/24; starting three out of their opening four top flight encounters.

Partey arguably would've started the game against United last Sunday, but his knock meant the player had to watch on from the sidelines.

Now, journalist Charles Watts has shared some news on the African's situation, taking to his YouTube channel with what he's heard.

According to the reliable reporter, Partey could be out for quite some time, and it is believed his injury could be a muscle-related issue in the upper part of his leg.

Watts explained:

thomas-partey-1

“[Partey] obviously missed the game at the weekend with that injury he picked up in training just before the Manchester United game.

“Sort of a muscle injury at the top of his leg, kind of groin stroke, thigh – I haven’t had it nailed down exactly what the issue is.

“But I have been told that six weeks is definitely the sort of timeframe that Arsenal and Thomas Partey and his people are looking towards.”

How good is Thomas Partey?

The former Atletico Madrid star was a crucial member of Arteta's squad over 22/23; ranking among their top five best performers by average match rating per 90 (WhoScored).

He also made more successful tackles per 90 than any other Arsenal player in the top flight that season, with pundit Nigel Winterburn calling him "so important".

"I think [Thomas] Partey has been so important," said the Gunners icon.

"If Arsenal are going to go anywhere near trying to win a title, he’s got to stay fit because last season, he had so many injuries.

“But he’s been real instrumental in that midfield, just keeping it ticking over, very efficient player, can get around the pitch, very mobile."

Meanwhile, La Liga expert Gerry Armstrong has also called Partey a "sensational player".

After this international break, the games will come thick and fast for Arsenal as they battle on four fronts. A player of Partey's experience and quality will be invaluable – once he returns to the fold.

Australia close in on 4-0 after Marsh hundreds

There will be no 5-0 clean sweep, but Australia have a good chance of mopping up a 4-0 result at the SCG after dominating the fourth day against England

The Report by Brydon Coverdale07-Jan-20180:59

Starc, Lyon leave England stuttering

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThere will be no 5-0 clean sweep, but Australia have a good chance of mopping up a 4-0 result at the SCG after dominating the fourth day against England. It was a day on which the brothers Marsh, Shaun and Mitchell, both scored centuries, while England’s bowlers fried as temperatures in parts of Sydney reached 47.3 degrees, making it the hottest day in the city since 1939. Australia finally declared after batting for 193 overs and England were left needing to bat nine hours to salvage a draw; within 30 minutes they had lost both their openers.By stumps, Joe Root had tried to forge some sort of resistance, but it seemed largely futile. Australia were six wickets from victory at the close of play, with England on 4 for 93, still trailing by 210 runs. Root was on 42 and Jonny Bairstow was on 17, but Australia could reasonably believe that one more wicket and it could all end quickly. It will be up to Moeen Ali and the fast bowlers, exhausted as they will be after more than two days in the field, to ensure that is not the case.If this innings was an opportunity for Mark Stoneman and James Vince to finish their disappointing campaigns on a high, it was an opportunity not taken. Stoneman was lbw to Mitchell Starc for a nine-ball duck in the third over; Vince compiled 18 before he was once again caught off an edge, this time at slip off Pat Cummins. Vince ended the series with 242 runs at 26.88, Stoneman with 232 at 25.77. They have provided England’s selectors with more questions than answers.Meanwhile, Alastair Cook was beautifully bowled by a Nathan Lyon offbreak for 10, and Lyon also picked up the wicket of Dawid Malan for 5. Malan played back to a delivery from Lyon that skidded on quicker than expected and struck his pad marginally before his bat. His decision to review proved less sound than umpire Joel Wilson’s call to adjudge him lbw; replays showed it was clearly pad first, and would have hit the top of the stumps.Four wickets in 34 overs was a thoroughly acceptable outcome for the Australians after Smith had declared almost exactly halfway through the middle session on 7 for 649, with a lead of 303. It had been Australia’s longest Test innings, in terms of balls faced, for more than 20 years. Of the top six, only Cameron Bancroft, who was bowled for a duck, had failed to reach fifty.A special day for the Marsh family•Getty Images

The day started with Shaun Marsh on 98, and he brought up his sixth Test hundred with a cover-driven boundary off Moeen from the fifth ball of the day. He celebrated with his partner and younger brother Mitchell, and later they again embraced when Mitchell raised his second Test hundred. Mitchell’s milestone came with a two through point, although the brothers almost messed up the moment by hugging in the middle of the second run, before remembering they had to make their ground.Such was the emotion of two siblings reaching Test centuries side by side. Neither one had been in Australia’s Test team in their last match before the start of this campaign; both received Ashes recalls, and both have repaid the selectors handsomely, with two hundreds each in the series. By the end of the innings, Shaun Marsh was second only to Smith on the series run tally for both sides.Mitchell Marsh’s joy was short-lived, for he was dismissed next ball after reaching his hundred when Tom Curran managed to jag one back significantly from outside off stump to bowl him for 101. Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh then combined for a 52-run stand before the Marsh was run out on 156. Starc skied a catch off Moeen for a brisk 11 and Paine finished unbeaten on 38 and Pat Cummins on 24.Legspinner Mason Crane finished with 1 for 193 from 48 overs, giving him the most expensive analysis ever by an England bowler on Test debut, and the fifth most expensive among all-comers. It was another unwanted milestone for England on a tour that has been full of disappointments, and may yet provide one more.

Chopra triple-ton helps Himachal amass 729

Prashant Chopra’s 338, the tenth-highest individual score in the Ranji Trophy and the first triple-century by a Himachal Pradesh batsman, helped the side amass a record 729 for 8, their highest total in the tournament on the second day against Punjab in Dharamsala.Chopra began the second day on 271 off 289 balls and barely let up his momentum, reaching 300 off 318 balls. A return catch to part-time offspinner Pargat Singh ended his 363-ball stay at the crease, by which time Chopra had hit 44 fours and two sixes. Himachal were on 602 at the time and the lower-middle order, led by Ankush Bains (80) and Rishi Dhawan (49) then helped them move past 700.Opening the innings with Jiwanjot Singh, Pargat struck a quick 64 off 69 balls in a 106-run opening partnership. He fell to Gurvinder Singh four overs before close of play, with Punjab trailing by 619 runs.
Ashok Dinda smacked an unbeaten 25-ball 55 to extend Bengal’s advantage over Services on the second day in Palam. His rapid fifty, and a 77-run tenth-wicket stand with Mohammed Shami that motored along at a rate of more than 10 per over propelled Bengal to 552 for 9. By close, Services had put up 103 on the board for the loss of one wicket.Bengal’s top order had done well to set up a strong base on the first day, reaching 341 for 3, and after quick wickets in the morning had left them at 378 for 6, their lower order stepped in. The last four wickets added 174 runs between them, with offspinner Aamir Gani chipping in with 51 off 84 balls to help the score past 450. The last-wicket pair of Shami and Dinda, however, laid into the Services attack. Dinda struck eight fours and two sixes, while Shami was unbeaten on 23 off 22 balls.
Wicketkeeper Manoj Singh’s maiden first-class century led Chhattisgarh’s rally on the second day against Goa in Porvorim as the lower-middle order helped the side amass 458 from an overnight score of 189 for 5.Manoj, who resumed the day on 31 in the company of Mohammad Kaif, scored 125 off 322 balls, and was the common factor in two big partnerships on the second day. After adding 93 with Kaif for the sixth wicket, Manoj and Jatin Saxena put on 132 for the seventh to take the side close to 350. An eighth-wicket partnership with Sumit Ruikar (57) then helped the side cross 400. Eight of Chhattisgarh’s dismissals fell to spin: left-arm spinner Darshan Misal, who had taken two wickets on the first day, completed his five-for and conceded 79 runs while offspinner Amit Yadav took a couple of lower order wickets to finish with 3 for 111.Goa’s openers managed to see the side through to close of play, adding 28 on the board.

Sky Sports Gives Update On Exciting Youngster Linked To West Ham

West Ham United are "pushing to sign" Manchester City's highly rated Portuguese youth international Carlos Borges as he enters the final year of his contract at the Etihad, claims Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Is Carlos Borges joining West Ham United?

The Hammers said their goodbyes to club captain and England international Declan Rice earlier this month, as the deal to sell him to fellow London side Arsenal was finally announced after what must have felt like months of radio silence for fans of both sides.

While the club would probably rather still have their talismanic midfielder, the £105m that's now burning a hole in their pocket has perhaps helped to ease the pain of his exit somewhat.

With this new-found money, the club have unsurprisingly been linked to a whole host of brilliant players from across European football, but a name being touted for a move to the East End many may not be as familiar with is Carlos Borges.

The 19-year-old winger is currently plying his trade for City's youth sides after joining the club in 2014 following an impressive start to his footballing journey at Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

He has been prolific at every youth level for the European champions, scoring 22 goals in 35 Premier League 2 games and 23 in the Under-18 Premier League competition.

According to the Guardian, the Irons are 'close to winning the race' to sign the young winger from City's impressive academy setup for a fee of just £14m that will include a buy-back clause in the deal.

It would be a brilliant piece of business if the East End side could get it over the line, as German giants Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt are also interested in the dynamic winger.

Other than the buy-back clause, one of the reasons why the fee for such a highly rated youngster isn't as outrageous as some might have thought it would be is because he has just 12 months remaining on his current deal, per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

He explained the situation live on Sky Sports News, which was posted to their YouTube channel:

"This is an interesting one because they're pushing to sign Carlos Borges from Manchester City. He's a Portuguese Under-19 international. Talks [are] ongoing over the structure of the deal; he's entered the final year of his City contract, so one to keep an eye on, there."

Who else have West Ham been linked to in the transfer window?

With Rice leaving a massive hole in the centre of the park for David Moyes' team, most of the players the club are said to be interested in are predominantly central midfielders.

The name that has probably been linked with a move to West Ham more than any other so far this window is Fulham's Joao Palhinha, who led in Europe's top five leagues for the most tackles last season, 147, and the most tackles won, at 83, per FBref.

Joao-Palhinha

Unfortunately, the club's initial £40m bid was firmly rejected by Fulham, with Football Insider reporting that the Cottagers have told West Ham that their midfield maestro is not for sale, while the Daily Mail claims that it would take an offer of £90m to secure his signature.

Outside of Fulham's star player, the Hammers have also been linked to Southampton's captain and set-piece specialist, James Ward-Prowse, who The Guardian says could cost the club in the region of £40m.

Whoever ends up donning the famous Claret and Blue next season, the London Stadium will likely be watching a very different team to the one they saw last year.

Tottenham: Spurs Hold Talks For "Extraordinary" Star

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher with his club open to selling him this summer, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign this summer?

New manager Ange Postecoglou is in the middle of a crucial, crucial period of his Spurs reign as he attempts to strengthen for his full debut campaign.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon arrive as confirmed signings with Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski making their north London stays permanent as well.

Despite their current outlay totalling £117 million, the north Londoners won't be finished there.

It is reliably believed that Spurs want to add two senior centre-back signings to their roster, with Postecoglou admitting that new defensive additions are being worked on behind-the-scenes.

"That's definitely our intention, absolutely," said the head coach recently.

"We've been working on it for a while and we'll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.

"I don't think it's any secret about some of the areas we needed to strengthen. Some of it I identified early on. The goalkeeper was one and central defence is another.

"In terms of the other boys, we've got a big squad but my view is I wanted to bring them along and just work with them, get some clarity in my head and give clarity to them."

Meanwhile, Postecoglou's side are also hunting for potential midfield additions, especially since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly nearing a move to Atletico Madrid.

Gallagher, who is ready to leave Chelsea in search of a new opportunity, has been linked with a move to Tottenham alongside the likes of Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

As per journalist Graeme Bailey and 90min, Tottenham have "had talks" to sign the 23-year-old alongside both West Ham and Brighton.

It's added that Chelsea are open to selling him this summer, but there is a problem in the form of his valuation, as Mauricio Pochettino's side value the player at £50 million.

None of the aforementioned trio are willing to pay that amount for Gallagher, leading to a stalemate of sorts.

"Chelsea open to Conor Gallagher sale but they stand firm on valuation," wrote Bailey on Twitter.

"West Ham, Tottenham and Brighton have all had talks – but none would be willing to pay £50m for him."

How good is Conor Gallagher?

The former Crystal Palace star endured a season of inconsistent starts last campaign with around half of his appearances coming from the substitute's bench.

Gallagher's best season at the top level came on loan at Selhurst Park over 2021/2022, where he finished the season as Patrick Vieira's best-performer by average match rating (WhoScored).

The homegrown ace racked up eight goals and three assists in the league that year – which clearly showcases he can be a player of real quality.

“His development is extraordinary and outstanding," said former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel last year.

“He is one of the key players at Crystal Palace and he has made a huge step in his development up front.

“He was a pleasure to coach in pre-season – he has so much positive energy, so much energy in general and so much work-rate to give that he can of course be a big help and a big influence.”

Spurs Expected to Reject £68m Bid For Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to reject a second bid from Bayern Munich for Harry Kane as they attempt to keep hold of their talisman, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Is Kane leaving Spurs?

Another summer transfer window means another Kane transfer saga with Bayern Munich this time the main protagonists. It has been Manchester City, it has been Manchester United, but now it is the Bavarians' turn to attempt to woo the striker.

Wooing Kane is expected to be the easy part with the Spurs forward quietly keen to leave north London in search of silverware, but convincing Daniel Levy to part ways with his prized asset is a different problem altogether.

Bayern have already seen a first bid rejected for the 29-year-old but have since submitted a second offer of approximately £68m plus add-ons.

However, Levy is apparently "unlikely" to accept a bid he considers significantly lower than Kane's asking price, according to Romano, and the Lilywhites have no plans to sell their forward this summer despite Bayern's growing interest.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated: "Bayern have made a new proposal for Harry Kane after the opening bid, €70m [£60m] plus add-ons rejected by Tottenham days ago.

"Now, Bayern as expected, I told you here many times Bayern will try again, they have no intention to give up, and they submitted a new proposal €80m [£68m] plus add-ons. From those close to Tottenham the message is very clear. After rejecting €70m plus add-ons, they absolutely see as unrealistic and unlikely for Daniel Levy to accept €80m plus add-ons."

He added: "So, at the moment it seems really difficult. Let's wait for Tottenham position on this story, but the feeling of those close to the board and close to Daniel Levy is very clear: it's more than difficult to see this happening for €80m plus add-ons.

"From Bayern, they remain convinced that Harry Kane is prepared to make this move to Bayern, but again it really depends as I always mentioned on Daniel Levy and at the moment there is no green light on this one."

Romano also claims that Tottenham are desperate not to let Kane leave this summer but as each bid improves it may become more and more difficult to keep the attacker in London, especially given his contract expires next summer and Spurs could lose him for free.

Ange Postecoglou will be as eager as anybody to keep Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he prepares to embark on his first season with the Lilywhites.

The Australian already has his work cut out to improve this Tottenham team over just one summer, but losing Kane would make that challenge even greater.

The England captain scored 30 Premier League goals last season despite Spurs' poor performances and eighth-placed finish and losing him would leave Postecoglou needing to fill an enormous hole in his new team.

Who else might leave Tottenham?

There is an expectation that there may be an exodus of players at Tottenham this summer as Postecoglou looks to transform this Spurs squad and sift out any deadwood.

Club captain Hugo Lloris is expected to leave in search of a new challenge amid growing criticisms of his performances. Spurs have already brought in his replacement in Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli.

Centre-backs Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Joe Rodon could all be sold this summer, while the future of full-backs Sergio Reguilon and Ivan Perisic remain up in the air. Postecoglou will be keen to make his backline more impenetrable next season following a campaign in which Spurs conceded three or more goals on nine separate occasions.

What Postecoglou plans to do with returning loanees Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Bryan Gil and Djed Spence remains to be seen but he will likely need to make a quick assessment during pre-season.

Spurs have already been busy in the market in terms of incomings and that is likely to be the case for outgoings as well as the window goes on.
