Australia overcome epic Jos Buttler rearguard to seal hefty win

Jhye Richardson plays match-winner with maiden five-wicket haul to break tourists’ resolve

Alan Gardner20-Dec-2021
Australia overcame an epic Jos Buttler rearguard in the final session of the day-night Test at Adelaide Oval to complete a hefty victory that puts them 2-0 up in the series and on the brink of retaining the Ashes. England took the game further than many had expected, largely through the efforts of Buttler during a self-denying innings of 26 from 207 balls, but must now attempt to become only the second team in Ashes history to win from two down.A late show of character from the England lower order could not disguise Australia’s dominance. Needing to take six wickets on the final day, they struck twice in the first hour and seemed on course to wrap things up before the floodlights would be needed. But from the flotsam and jetsam of the innings, Buttler and Chris Woakes lashed together a stand worth 61 in 31.2 overs to help keep the tourists afloat.Jhye Richardson was bowler to step in and play match-winner for Australia, a maiden five-wicket haul finally breaking English resolve. His slippery nip-backer with the second new ball accounted for Woakes, after a gutsy 44 from the No. 8, and then with Buttler’s marathon effort threatening to put the result into question, Richardson came back again after the tea interval. Buttler’s dismissal hit wicket, stepping back on to his off stump, was heartbreaking but the win no more than Australia deserved.Jhye Richardson’s first Test five-for sealed the win•AFP/Getty ImagesThings would surely have ended several hours earlier had Alex Carey not failed to move for a regulation outside edge from Buttler’s eighth ball. Mitchell Starc had removed Ollie Pope in his first full over of the morning – after taking the key wicket of Joe Root moments before the close on day four – and he could have handed Buttler a pair, only for the ball to disappear between keeper and first slip. But Buttler grew into his innings, and although Ben Stokes fell lbw to Nathan Lyon after a dogged stay, England’s seventh-wicket pair succeeded in transferring some pressure back on to the home attack. Woakes might have been run out on 15, Marcus Harris underarming past the stumps from silly mid-off, but was otherwise solid and stand-in captain Steven Smith belatedly ran through his options, bringing on Cameron Green as well as the legspin of both himself and Marnus Labuschagne, as Australia awaited the second new ball.It did not bring immediate dividends, as Buttler and Woakes raised only England’s fourth 50-plus stand of the series. But with the last ball of the 88th over, Richardson ripped one through Woakes, finding the perfect length to keep him stuck on the crease and enough inward movement to beat the inside edge and clonk the top of middle stump.Related

England's fight fails to mask their failings with bat and ball

Australia reassert age-old dominance of England at home

Buttler was by now in the zone, however, dealing calmly with the threat of Starc and Lyon – two bowlers who had dismissed him a combined seven times previously in Tests. In complete contrast to his limited-overs batting persona, he played barely a shot in anger, and England chewed through another chunk of the day as Buttler and Ollie Robinson got to within sight of going in at tea seven down.Lyon struck again to bring Australia closer, however, as Robinson prodded to slip on the back foot. Stuart Broad almost contrived to get himself out in a different way from each of his first three deliveries – a thick edge just evaded Travis Head in the gully, the next beat Broad on the inside but cleared the stumps, and he then survived an lbw review having played no shot – and the umpires were satisfied enough that a result was on the cards to delay the interval by 15 minutes. Broad stuck to his task and delayed Australia further by successfully overturning an lbw decision after Paul Wilson missed the intervention of an inside edge. But there was no grand finale written in the stars, even though the floodlights were on going into the final session, with some 26 overs left in the day. Buttler had played the second-longest innings of his Test career when Richardson pushed him back by a fateful few millemetres. It took only a moment for the Australians to notice that one of the zing bails had been dislodged, Buttler turning in disbelief before walking from the ground with a hollow look on his face.Jos Buttler was out hit wicket•EPAButtler had batted for more than four hours, his strike rate of 12.56 the third-slowest in Test history for an innings of 200 balls or more. Rarely is Buttler mentioned in the same category as a wicketkeeper as Jack Russell, but this was an innings to rank alongside Russell’s famous show of gumption at Johannesburg in 1995-96.Except, on that occasion, Russell was keeping a senior batter company, as Mike Atherton saw England through to a draw. Buttler had no such support, with Root’s side having squandered their best opportunity to bat their way to safety on the third day. It was left to Richardson to pick off the final wicket, James Anderson fending a lifter to gully, as Australia completed the victory that had always seemed in their grasp – never mind what (the) Buttler scored.

The Red Dragons remain some way off hitting their ultimate top-flight target for now, but are hoping to make history in 2024-25 by securing a third successive promotion. A meteoric rise up the EFL ladder has been enjoyed under the stewardship of Hollywood co-owners.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reynolds and McElhenney have made the funds available, with commercial deals such as the one which made the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series possible, helping the Welsh outfit to remain fiercely competitive which making regular additions to their squad in each passing transfer window.

  • WHAT FOOTBALL FINANCE EXPERT SAID

Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has, however, told of how tricky Wrexham may find it to clear the final hurdle before reaching the big time: “Wrexham have never had any form of financial regulation to worry about when climbing through the leagues, there’s nothing that they need to mandate against currently. However, if they were to get promoted to the Championship, that becomes a different story.

“I’d expect them to invest if they were to gain promotion but even if a club has unlimited financial wealth, you can’t just throw the blank chequebook at getting promoted to the Premier League. You’ve got clubs that have huge squads and wage bills, those clubs that have come down from the Premier League that have parachute payments, it’s a tall order to go straight up from the Championship.

“There is that risk and reward factor and it can backfire the other way, it’s a gamble. If you really go for it and push against the financial regulations in the Championship, you can land that gamble but if you don’t it can unravel the other way. We’ve seen clubs in the division get points deductions and suddenly you’re back to where you started, in a financial predicament.

“There will be a financial consideration for the club, obviously they have great aspirations but there has to be a long-term target for the club to be promoted rather than bouncing straight up.”

Pundit says Ange has a "very gifted" unseen teenager at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has been told that there is a “very gifted” teenager in his ranks who’s yet to make his senior debut, with Spurs supporters also urged to “keep an eye” on the player.

On Sunday, Postecoglou was handed a damaging defeat and perhaps his worst since taking over as manager last summer.

Pundit convinced Premier League club could make £60m bid for Tottenham star

The Australian watched on in disbelief from the Spurs dugout as his Lilywhites side blew a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex. The away side took full control at first through Brennan Johnson – who scored his sixth goal in six games – before James Maddison buried a side-footed finish past Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton net for their second before half-time.

After an impressive first 45, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Postecoglou’s side would run away with all three points against the Seagulls. However, the total opposite happened after the restart, with Spurs ultimately capitulating and blowing their two-goal advantage.

A three-goal swing inside 20 minutes – courtesy of strikes from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck – turned the game on its head and handed Postecoglou his first defeat in all competitions since the North London Derby. A bitterly disappointed Postecoglou, speaking after the game, claimed his Spurs players allowed Brighton to overrun them.

“All of it is disappointing,” said Postecoglou after Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

“Like I said, there are certain elements of this team that have been pretty consistent throughout my tenure, and that is one, even on our not-so-good days we’ve always fought and been competitive. I think that’s been a non-negotiable. Like I said, today’s the first day I actually felt like we didn’t deliver in those areas. Whether that’s defensively, whether that’s with the ball. Like I said, sport is as much about competition as it is about anything else. And if you don’t compete, you allow the opponent to overrun you in that manner, you’re not going to get anything out of it.”

There were a few bad performers on the day, with Destiny Udogie enduring a day to forget at Brighton alongside a host of his teammates.

Tottenham fans told to "keep an eye" on Lucá Williams-Barnett

In terms of the future and their prospering academy, the future seems bright, with youngsters Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear and others impressing lately.

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham says Postecoglou has a “gifted” unseen youngster in Lucá Williams-Barnett – a 16-year-old forward currently playing a year above his age group.

“What people need to remember, is he is actually playing a year up,” Wenham said.

“Therefore, he isn’t even an official Under-18s player, he is still a schoolboy player. As a result, he will be announced in next year’s intake if he signs a scholarship. He is heavily regarded because he can play equally as well on the wing as he can in the number 10 position. He’s a very gifted technical footballer.

“It has been fantastic to see him step up with ease, he is starting every game and making a really positive contribution. Spurs fans should keep an eye on him at youth level.”

The teenager boasts six goals and two assists in six Under-18 appearances so far this term, highlighting his electric form right now. If he continues on this run, it could only be a matter of time before he features in the first team.

Rohl must drop Ugbo and unleash Sheffield Wednesday’s "game-changer"

Sheffield Wednesday picked up their first win in the Championship since the opening day last time out, surprisingly beating West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in an action-packed affair at Hillsborough.

The Baggies remain at the top of the table despite this blow to their ego in South Yorkshire, as both Josh Windass and Anthony Musaba found the back of the net, alongside a slice of fortune from Darnell Furlong, to gift Danny Rohl’s men a much-needed three points.

The victory would have obviously pleased the German in the dug-out, but he could make a couple of tweaks to his lineup anyway when Wednesday face off against Bristol City later on, with Ike Ugbo in danger of being potentially axed.

Ugbo's performance vs West Brom

It has arguably been an underwhelming start back at Wednesday for Ugbo, who was a firm fan’s favourite last season as an exciting loanee, with the ex-Chelsea youngster helping himself to an impressive seven goals from 18 second tier games as the Owls beat the drop.

Now, however, the Canada international only has one goal and one assist from eight appearances on his return, with his showing against Carlos Corberan’s Baggies somewhat forgettable.

The below-par Wednesday number 12 was barely involved throughout, as other attacking stars such as the aforementioned Windass and Barry Bannan took centre stage over the quiet 26-year-old.

Ugbo would only muster up 12 touches of the ball throughout his flat 71 minutes on the pitch, with James Beadle in the Owls net even beating this amount of touches himself at 31.

Thankfully for Rohl’s side, Musaba would pop up with a crucial goal at the death away from Ugbo’s off-day, with the lacklustre 26-year-old also failing to even register a single shot at Alex Palmer’s net.

Ugbo was handed out a low 6/10 rating by Sheffield Star journalist Alex Miller after the game subsequently, with the potential now for the Owls boss to freshen things up top away from relying on their number 12 to come good.

Canada international Ike Ugbo.

The players who could replace Ugbo

The first shout that could replace Ugbo this Wednesday night is Michael Smith, who was substituted on in place of the Canada international late on versus West Brom.

Smith couldn’t really leave his mark on the contest, as Musaba ended up being the late goalscoring hero, but the experienced centre-forward did manage to throw himself about as a lively presence with all four of the aerial duels he went in for successfully won.

The 32-year-old – who has been dubbed a “game-changer” by former boss Darren Moore – has actually bettered Ugbo’s numbers this season so far too, with two more goal contributions in all competitions, and could feel he’s worthy of a starting spot away at Ashton Gate consequently.

Smith also has three goals from nine games across his career when facing off against Bristol City, with the hope of adding another to his Wednesday goal tally this evening if he is selected over an underperforming Ugbo.

Jamal Lowe will also feel he’s in for a credible shout to start over the ex-Troyes attacker too, having impressed in spurts since joining the Owls in the summer, with a debut goal against a hapless Plymouth Argyle on the opening day sticking out.

Yet, he has had to make do with a spot just on the substitutes bench in the last two clashes, with a need perhaps for Rohl to freshen his side up in attack away from Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

The Owls manager will want his team to press on now and pick up another three points – away from who does end up leading the line – and with the Robins’ form this campaign so far very up-and-down, Wednesday will hope they can catch the hosts on a bad day.

Rangers struck gold on Ibrox signing who is now worth more than Bajrami

Glasgow Rangers’ recent Old Firm troubles continued as they suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat over the weekend to their biggest rivals.

The result leaves the Ibrox side trailing the league leaders by five points in the Premiership after just four matches. It wasn’t so much the defeat, which was the worst part, as Rangers looked frightened to make anything happen, despite enjoying a bright enough start to the game.

Philippe Clement couldn’t have picked a better time for the international break to come. While the players may have failed to deliver on the pitch, the Belgian must take some responsibility for the results, as this was the Gers' fourth defeat in five Old Firm games under him.

It is clear that the summer transfer window wasn’t as productive as it should have been. Yes, the manager may have shipped out high earners such as John Lundstram, Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson among others, but the replacements have to prove they are up to the required standard.

Deadline day did bring in two new arrivals, as defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo and attacking midfielder Nedim Bajrami both joined the Light Blues before the window closed.

Kasanwirjo is only at Ibrox temporarily, but Clement shelled out around €4m (£3.4m) to bring the Albanian from Italy to Scotland.

He shone at Euro 2024 for Albania. Could the midfielder hit the ground running in Scotland?

Nedim Bajrami’s 2023/24 season in numbers

The 25-year-old joined Sassuolo in the summer of 2022, joining from fellow Italian side FC Empoli.

He had shone there, registering 44 goal contributions – 22 goals and 22 assists – in 127 games, but during his two years at Sassuolo, Bajrami couldn’t quite match these sorts of numbers.

Four assists and four goals were all he could manage in two seasons with the club. They managed to remain in Serie A during his first campaign but suffered relegation during 2023/24 and the offer from Rangers was clearly too good to turn down.

Despite scoring only twice in the Italian top flight, Bajrami managed to create three big chances, averaging 0.8 key passes per game while succeeding with 57% of his dribbles throughout the campaign.

Considering he averaged around 47 minutes per game, these are decent enough stats, especially in a top-five European league.

Among his peers in Serie A last season, the Albanian ranked in the top 9% for crosses per 90 (5.36) along with ranking in the top 6% for successful take-on percentage per 90 (54.4%), meaning he not only delivered balls into the box regularly, but the midfielder was also able to beat his opposition man more often than not.

These types of traits will surely allow him to thrive in Scotland, particularly as Clement needs a player of his class in the number ten role.

Bajrami also proved he has a keen eye for goal, scoring after just 23 seconds against Italy at Euro 2024 with a well-taken finish, and this experience on the biggest stage will do him no harm at all as he begins a new challenge.

Signing an attacking midfielder was a priority for Clement, but the judgment is out on Bajrami until he starts playing for the club.

It's evident he's got vast potential and he could perform strongly alongside a certain Nicolas Raskin in central areas.

Nicolas Raskin’s Rangers statistics

The Ibrox side had been chasing the Belgian youngster for a few months prior to securing his signature for £1.2m in January 2023.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

Michael Beale immediately lavished praise on the midfielder, saying: “He is a young player that has already amassed good experience both in domestic and European competition. I am looking forward to working with him closely and integrating him into our team.”

The £19k-per-week midfielder went on to make 16 appearances for the club during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, integrating himself well into the side ahead of his first full season.

Hailed as a “pit bull” by journalist Bob Faesen back in 2020 due to his physical nature and box-to-box tendencies, Raskin’s future looked bright last season.

Due to injury problems, however, he managed to feature just 31 times in all competitions, of which only 20 were from the starting XI.

The Belgian did recover 5.3 balls, made 2.3 tackles and won 53% of his total duels per game when he did play in the Premiership, showing flashes of his abilities in the heart of the midfield.

The 23-year-old made his first appearance of the current campaign against Celtic last weekend, coming on for a ten-minute cameo which saw him succeed with 100% of his dribbles and win 75% of his duels.

Perhaps this is a sign of things to come for the talented midfielder and his market value continues to grow.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Nicolas Raskin’s market value at Rangers in 2024

The former Standard Liege starlet is now currently valued at £5.5m according to Transfermarkt, which ranks him as the second most valuable player in the entire Rangers squad.

Clement could certainly secure a substantial profit on the midfielder should he sell him in one of the next windows, although there is no doubt his immediate future lies at the Light Blues.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

Raskin now needs a consistent run in the starting XI to live up to the hype generated upon his arrival 18 months ago. Of course, injury problems haven’t exactly helped his cause during his time at the club.

His value is £2m more than what the Gers paid to sign Bajrami, meaning the club have certainly hit gold on the tenacious midfielder.

Hopefully, the international break gives him suitable time to recover ahead of the crucial run of fixtures that follow.

Better than Bogusz: Celtic considering late move for "tenacious" SPFL gem

The summer transfer window officially slams shut this evening and that means that Celtic have little time left to complete their remaining business.

It has been reported that Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in three new players before the deadline and Augsburg central midfielder Arne Engels is one of them.

Football Scotland reports that the Hoops are prepared to break their transfer record to land the £10m-rated Belgian youngster to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

The Scottish giants want to add two midfielders to the group, though, and are eyeing up options to come in alongside Engels before the close of play today.

Celtic eyeing Premiership talent

According to Football Scotland, the Hoops are considering a late swoop to sign central midfielder Luke McCowan from Scottish Premiership rivals Dundee.

The report claims that the Bhoys are looking at a number of players in that position, with Swiss ace Alyvn Sanches also on their list, and the Scottish gem is one of them.

It states that a move for LAFC star Mateusz Bogusz has fallen through, after they failed to reach an agreement with the MLS outfit, and McCowan has emerged as an alternative option.

Rodgers could now land an upgrade on the Polish transfer target by swooping to secure a deal for McCowan alongside Engels, instead of the LAFC maestro.

Why Celtic should sign Luke McCowan

Firstly, the Scottish star is a proven Premiership performer who does not need a period of adaptation as he has already shown he can perform to a high level in the division, whereas Bogusz has only starred in the MLS.

The 26-year-old dynamo's performances also suggest that he could offer more out of possession than the Polish talent, whilst providing a similar level of quality on the ball.

So far this season, McCowan has produced two goals and one assist in three games, whilst also making 4.7 tackles and interceptions combined per game with a duel success rate of 63%.

His impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign has followed on from his superb displays in the middle of the park for the SPFL side in the 2023/24 season.

As you can see in the table above, both central midfielders have the quality to get forward to provide a threat as a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, McCowan's defensive stats, last season and in the first three matches of the current campaign, suggest that he has more to offer out of possession.

This could make him a better option than Bogusz off the ball, particularly with Champions League games that Celtic will need to be strong defensively in on the horizon, whilst offering a similar level of quality in the final third.

Rodgers lining up late Celtic swoop for "powerful" Kyogo upgrade

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the Premier League striker.

Therefore, Rodgers should swoop to sign McCowan, who was dubbed "tenacious" by writer Kai Watson, from Dundee before the end of the window as a fantastic alternative to the LAFC star.
