'There's relief, there's joy' – Christen Press announces retirement after legendary career with USWNT and Angel City

Two-time World Cup champion Christen Press announced her retirement from professional soccer on Wednesday, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year career as one of the most accomplished forwards in United States women's national team history. The 36-year-old star scored 64 international goals, ranking ninth all-time in USWNT history.

Getty ImagesRemarkable 14-year professional career

Press announced her decision to retire during an emotional appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America." The 36-year-old forward confirmed she will finish the current NWSL season with Angel City FC before hanging up her boots for good, bringing closure to a storied 14-year professional career that began in 2011.

"I'm retiring from professional soccer, and I've decided that this is my last season and my last few games," Press said. "I feel a mix of everything. There's yes, there's relief, there's joy, there's excitement, there's fear, there's so much grief. I have so much grief, a part of me, a piece of me, I'm losing her. I thought I would wait until I didn't want to play anymore.

"But I realized that time's never going to come and I can play, and my body can keep going. And I think it was really important for me to make this decision for myself before that became a different reality."

AdvertisementLegacy defined by clutch moments

When Press stepped onto the field for the 2019 World Cup semifinal against England, she faced immense pressure replacing an injured Megan Rapinoe in the starting lineup. Just 10 minutes into the match, Press silenced any doubters with a perfectly placed header that gave the U.S. an early lead in what would become a 2-1 victory.

Press retires with 64 international goals across 155 appearances for the national team, placing her ninth on the all-time USWNT scoring list – one goal ahead of her former teammate Rapinoe.

A trailblazer on and off the pitch

Press's impact extends far beyond her impressive statistics. As Angel City FC's first official signing in 2021, she helped establish the foundation for one of the NWSL's most ambitious expansion clubs.

Her career path reflects the evolution of women's professional soccer, having played in the now-defunct Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league to Sweden to NWSL then the English Super League before returning to America.

The forward's final professional chapter hasn't been without challenges. After joining Angel City, Press suffered a torn ACL in June 2022 that required multiple surgeries and kept her sidelined until the 2024 season.

Angel City FC will honor Press during their match against the Portland Thorns on Sunday at BMO Field in Los Angeles.

Mikel Arteta sends 'begging' message to Viktor Gyokeres after £60m striker's goal drought continues against Fulham

Arsenal edged out a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday evening. Leandro Trossard scored the only goal of the game on the hour mark after Gabriel Magalhaes knocked a Bukayo Saka corner into the path of the Belgian to tuck past Bernd Leno. However, the result means striker Viktor Gyokeres has failed to score since netting in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last month.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Arsenal's misfiring striker

The pressure has been Gyokeres since he moved to Arsenal over the summer. The Swede was rampant for Sporting CP last season, scoring 39 times as the Portuguese powerhouse claimed the Liga Portugal title.

The 27-year-old's flying form saw him linked with a high profile move to the Premier League in the off-season with Arsenal ultimately winning the race to secure his services. Manchester United had been credited with an interest in Gyokeres, and a move to Old Trafford would have seen the Sweden international link up with Ruben Amorim again, the pair excelling together during their respective stints in Lisbon.

However, Gyokeres has failed to live up to expectations in the opening weeks of his Arsenal career. Indeed, the former Coventry man has scored just three times in his opening eight league matches, including a brace in a routine 5-0 home win over Leeds in August.

Gyokeres last scored against Nottingham Forest in what was Ange Postecoglou's first game at the City Ground helm, but is now on a run of seven club games without a goal, a streak that stretches to nine matches if you include his two Sweden outings this month.

  • 'We were all begging for him to score'

Gyokeres managed three shots at Craven Cottage on Saturday evening and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes the only frustration from the game was the forward's failure to hit the back of the net again.

"He was very close today again, two or three times. We were all begging for him to score. The work rate he puts in for the team is phenomenal, so we try to give him support and love and it will come," Arteta said after the narrow London triumph.

Arteta isn't worried about Gyokeres' barren run in front of goal, and prior to the Fulham victory, stated that his confidence in the striker stems from a conversation they had over the summer before Arsenal signed the striker.

The idea of Gyokeres going through a difficult spell was raised, and the reaction was telling. "He looks at you and doesn’t move. He was on the screen like this and he just said: 'It’s fine'," Arteta revealed. "That’s him. There’s no emotion there, he just has a single-targeted mindset. That’s what I love about him."

  • Getty Images Sport

'His journey had bumps in the road'

Arsenal place huge emphasis on analytics when it comes to signing players, but character and personality are also key traits they look for when they pursue a player. And Arteta has admitted that Gyokeres' 'bumpy' journey to the top stands the striker in good stead.

"He has not been a top striker in all of his career. His journey had bumps in the road," Arteta said. "And when you go to a level, you’re going to have this, it doesn’t go like this (motions a constant upward curve).

"I haven’t seen that for any player, except one or two in history. So get ready and deal with it with naturally, and obviously with all the support that he has from us."

And Arteta is pleased with how Gyokeres has handled his dry spell, and noted that his presence and work off the ball ha created space for others.

"Viktor adds so many things, that probably are not noticeable, the Arsenal boss said. "He creates environment and space and solutions to a lot of the players around him. And with the talent that we have in the team, I’m sure that everybody, him included, will benefit from that."

  • Gyokeres looking to end goal drought

Arsenal now have three successive home games as Gyokeres looks to end his goal drought. The Gunners face a tough test next week as they take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in a bid to make it three European wins from three having beaten Athletic Club and Olympiacos in their opening two League phase games.

The north London side then welcome Crystal Palace and Brighton to the Emirates between now and the end of the month in the Premier League and EFL Cup as they look to end a lengthy wait for silverware.

Tim Southee joins England set-up as 'special skills consultant'

Former New Zealand seamer takes over from Anderson in England back-room staff

ESPNcricinfo staff15-May-2025Tim Southee will link up with his former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum in time for England’s first Test of the summer, against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge next week, after being confirmed on a short-term deal as James Anderson’s replacement in their coaching staff across formats.Southee, 36, retired from Test cricket at the conclusion of England’s 2-1 series win in New Zealand in December, after a 16-year career that included a national-record 776 wickets across international formats. In that period, he played alongside McCullum on 170 occasions, including 78 under his leadership – while also sharing the field at Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and Middlesex in the T20 Blast. McCullum presented Southee with a bottle of red wine signed by the England team at the conclusion of Southee’s 107th and final Test in Hamilton. His official title in the England set-up will be “Specialist Skills Consultant”, but his appointment is in effect a like-for-like replacement for Anderson, who took his own vast international experience straight into the back-room staff after his own 21-year Test career came to an end at Lord’s last July. This summer, however, Anderson is proritising a season-long deal to play for Lancashire, for whom he could make a first appearance of the season later this month after recuperating from a calf injury.Southee’s England deal includes the one-off Zimbabwe Test, beginning May 22, as well as the white-ball series against West Indies and the five Tests against India that get underway in June and July. His stint will conclude after the Oval Test on August 4, at which point he is due to resume his playing career with Birmingham Phoenix in the Men’s Hundred. In a press release, the ECB welcomed his involvement, saying: “With his vast experience of playing in a wide range of conditions around the world and across all formats, [Southee] brings valuable insight and knowledge to the players.”

Now worth more than Guehi: Liverpool lost "superstar” for less than Quansah

Liverpool won the Premier League last season and then underwent major surgery throughout the summer transfer window.

Perhaps you could frame the Reds as a team in transition. This could be asserted for the 2024/25 campaign, when Liverpool pranced their way through the term and, yes, won the league title in Arne Slot’s first year at the helm.

Maybe it could also be argued that this is a transitional year for Liverpool. After all, many ins and outs occurred down Anfield Road this summer.

Regardless of which side of the fence you stand on, none can argue that Slot’s Liverpool are not title contenders once again, having won all five of their opening Premier League fixtures to establish a five-point lead at the summit. It took them until November to achieve that last year.

It is early days, of course, but the Merseysiders are shaping into quite the force, having signed Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz and many more.

However, they are hardly impregnable, with Liverpool’s defensive issues made worse by the ACL injury sustained by Giovanni Leoni against Southampton on Tuesday evening in the Carabao Cup.

How Leoni's injury affects Liverpool

Leoni must be gutted. Impressive on his Liverpool debut after leaving Parma in the summer, the 18-year-old will now recover across his first campaign in England, unlikely to be match fit until the business end.

Liverpool centre-back Giovanni Leoni

He had looked calm and assured and confident on the ball. Sadly, this is a significant setback for one so young. It’s about now that sporting director Richard Hughes might lament Crystal Palace’s failure to sign a Guehi replacement at the end of the transfer window, thus ending a move that looked all but complete and a summer in the making.

Such is football, but there’s no question the Premier League champions are now one Virgil van Dijk injury away from alarm bells to start ringing, with a four-front charge for silverware currently underway.

Guehi, too, may be frustrated at how things have panned out, with his chances of regular football at Liverpool almost certain had he indeed finalised that last-minute move.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

Hughes and Slot may also be tacitly frustrated that they sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35m, with the hierarchy unable to promise the homegrown talent regularity of minutes for the club.

But then there will also be much confidence in Liverpool’s capacity to pull through. The backline has been refashioned over the past few months.

However, Quansah’s isn’t the only signature that may have left with an air of ruefulness. In fact, far more regret could be attributed to the mood when Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid in June.

Alexander-Arnold's value after leaving

Liverpool were hamstrung. Noise coming from the concerning contract situations of Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alexander-Arnold dominated the 2024/25 campaign, Slot’s first at the helm.

It’s small wonder that many felt the Reds would fall apart following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, with the ‘big three’ all slated to follow him out the gates.

That wasn’t the case. The skipper and the attacking talisman both renewed their Liverpool vows, but Alexander-Arnold, 26, left for pastures new and is now a member of Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid team.

Hailed as a “generational” talent by content creator Asim Mahmood, Trent’s range of passing and his vision and inventions on the ball have

He might not be the answer to Liverpool’s central defensive issues right now, but it’s an underpinning of the upheaval that has beset Slot’s backline in recent months.

Having refused FSG’s offers, the England international was set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer before Florentino Perez decided to bring him over for the Club World Cup, paying the English outfit an £8m fee to release him from his contract several weeks early.

This is some distance below the figure Liverpool recouped from Quansah’s sale, and does at least highlight the club’s expertise at the negotiating table, spending heavily this summer but banking a pretty penny too.

Alas, what’s done is done, but Alexander-Arnold is one of the world’s best, even if he is struggling to click from the off with Los Blancos, in and out of the starting line-up before a cruel injury that has ruled him out of action for the foreseeable.

For Liverpool to have got anything from a player imminently out of contract is a testament to Hughes’ prowess behind the desk, but, as Transfermarkt record it, his market value has already shot back up to £66m, which stands taller than the £35m figure the Reds were willing to pay for Guehi.

Moreover, when Alexander-Arnold brings it all together in Spain – and he will – this value will only skyrocket further.

In spite of the signing of Frimpong, the continued development of Conor Bradley and Dominik Szoboszlai’s interesting rebrand into a right-back, when called upon, none of them is Trent.

Dominik Szoboszlai in action for Liverpool

He was truly one-of-a-kind, and the most painful part of all is that all of a red persuasion across Merseyside and beyond felt that he was on the pathway to immortality at Liverpool, sure to replace Van Dijk as club captain and then take his seat, one day, on a plinth beside Steven Gerrard.

“He’s been a superstar,” Alan Shearer said, acknowledging the Three Lions man at the end of his Premier League career.

Alexander-Arnold must always be treasured for his contribution toward a sustained period of success, but he sadly joins a different category now, and it’s one the fans will look back at regretfully for many years.

Matthews, Fletcher star in WI's series-levelling win

South Africa’s batters were unable to convert starts which kept them to an under-par score at the Three Ws Oval

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jun-2025Hayley Matthews’ unbeaten 63 and two wickets each from Afy Fletcher and Karishma Ramharack helped West Indies beat South Africa and level the series 1-1 ahead of the decider on Monday. Six of South Africa’s batters got to double figures but no one scored more than 21, which helped West Indies keep the score down to 113 before Matthews iced the chase at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados.Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits got South Africa off to a good start after being put into bat. Wolvaardt hit Jahzara Claxton and Shawnisha Hector for boundaries in a 30-run opening stand before being dismissed for 16. Matthews, who had opened the bowling, returned in the sixth over to knock over Marizanne Kapp for a duck.Fletcher, the pick of West Indies bowlers, bowled five dots in her first over and dismissed Brits for a 21-ball 14 in the seventh, as South Africa lost 3 for 10. She kept Nadine de Klerk quiet but the batter got the tempo up at the other end. De Klerk hit the only six in the innings off Aaliyah Alleyne and put on 29 off 26 balls for the fourth wicket with Karabo Meso, taking South Africa to 69 for 3 in the 13th over.Fletcher got de Klerk’s wicket in her final over, which caused another slump of 3 for 10 as Ramharack got wickets in successive overs. Annerie Dercksen joined Meso and they had an unbeaten 34-run stand which picked up pace gradually. Both boundaries in the stand came in the final two overs that went for 18, taking South Africa to 113 for 6.Qiana Joseph started the West Indies chase with two boundaries off Nonkululeko Mlaba. Matthews, with 9 off 17, was slow to start but saw off Kapp’s three-over opening spell. Ayabonga Khaka came on in the eighth to get Joseph for 17 and end the 41-run opening stand.Matthews was stable in the middle overs but her partners either got stuck or fell cheaply. Mlaba and Khaka contained Hector before she was dismissed by Masabata Klaas for 3 off 12 balls. Matthews hit three fours in the next six balls before Mlaba, the pick of South Africa’s bowlers, got Shemaine Campbelle (7) and Chinelle Henry (3) in successive overs to leave West Indies on 77 for 4, needing 37 off 35 balls.Jannillea Glasgow and Matthews kept West Indies ticking despite there being no boundary between overs 13 and 18. With 16 needed off 12, Matthews – fresh off a run-a-ball 50 – whacked Khaka for a six and a four. The 13-run over was the most expensive of the innings. Glasgow then hit the winning runs off de Klerk.

Fabrizio Romano shares what he's heard from Man Utd on £190k-p/w star's Old Trafford future

Manchester United are looking to plan for the long-term under Ruben Amorim and Fabrizio Romano has now delivered a key update on the future of one of their stars.

Matheus Cunha excited for what's to come at Man Utd

Admittedly, the Red Devils have had a mixed start to the season, and it will take time to get things right as they aim to climb the Premier League table, albeit Matheus Cunha has been impressive since his summer transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Opening up on his settling in period, the Brazil international has laid out his plans to continue improving at Old Trafford, claiming that he is enjoying the challenge of helping Manchester United to get back to their best.

He said via the People’s Person: “What I was searching for as a person more than anything else, I’m slowly finding. You constantly want to improve; that’s innate in human nature, but I can’t help but stop and enjoy this moment.

“Feeling privileged to wear the jersey of the greatest national team in the world, one of the greatest clubs in the world… It’s a spectacular personal moment. I have an incredible family, another little girl now, everyone is doing well and healthy. I’m enjoying all of this in a positive way.”

While the Red Devils look to rectify results on the field, club officials are ready to push for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton despite Real Madrid also holding an interest in the England international.

Man Utd will not want to repeat the mistake they made with McTominay

However, bringing new talent into the building isn’t their only priority, with an update now emerging on the future of one of their key stars whose next steps have now become clearer.

Fabrizio Romano delivers Harry Maguire contract update

According to Romano in his GIVEMESPORT column, Manchester United star Harry Maguire is in talks over a contract extension, but he won’t be set for a pay rise if he does end up putting pen to paper at Old Trafford.

He said: “No [he won’t be receiving a pay rise]. It would have to be a different salary structure for Maguire in order to make it happen, talks are taking place.”

Reported to be earning £190,000 per week at Old Trafford, the England international is famously one of Manchester United’s most expensive ever signings following his £80 million move to the club in 2019 from Leicester City.

Throughout highs and lows, Maguire’s leadership qualities and consistent level of performance have always shone through, and he is worthy of an extended stay at Old Trafford while Amorim tries to navigate a transitional period for the club.

Of course, he is likely to garner interest in the transfer market. However, Manchester United fans will hope a new contract can be sorted out for one of their most dependable assets.

Jamal Musiala is back! Bayern Munich star feeling 'fantastic' taking it 'step by step' on return to training pitch following brutal injury against PSG

Jamal Musiala is finally back on the grass after spending three and a half months on the sidelines with a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle suffered against Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup. The Bayern Munich prodigy has now taken his first major step toward full recovery. Smiling, confident and motivated, Musiala is “taking it step by step” as he returns to training.

Musiala hits the ground running after freaky injury

The week was already filled with good news for the Bavarian fans and to top it off, Bayern have confirmed the return of Musiala to training. After months of rehab and controlled physiotherapy, the Germany international returned to the Sabener Strasse training pitch, marking his first outdoor session since his brutal injury in July. The club’s social media captured the emotional moment with Musiala jogging lightly, then breaking into a grin as he stretched under the sky.

“It was great for me to be back on the pitch. It felt fantastic,” said the 22-year-old midfielder, beaming. “And the most important thing: my foot felt good.”

His return follows a long recovery period after undergoing surgery for a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula. Thursday’s light running and coordination work with Bayern fitness coach Simon Martinello marked what Musiala described as “a very big step.”

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe long road to recovery for Musiala

Since the July setback against PSG, Musiala has followed a methodical recovery plan under Bayern’s medical and conditioning team. From regaining motion to building strength, each phase was tracked closely. “My first jump a few weeks ago, then my first run on the Alter-G, now on the pitch. Every week, you take a new step forward,” he shared.

His focus now is gradual progression by regaining speed, balance, and confidence before kicking the ball. “It’s always step by step. You don’t want to do anything too quickly. When I come back, I want to be at 100 per cent, at a good level. That’s why we’re taking our time,” said the midfielder as he emphasises patience over pressure.

Behind the calm determination lies Bayern’s carefully managed rehab strategy. The club aims to have Musiala back in competitive shape by late 2025, without risking setbacks. His recovery has mirrored that of team-mate Alphonso Davies, who is also returning from an ACL injury sustained earlier this year.

Musiala appreciates Bayern and his teammates support

Musiala’s comeback has been strengthened by the camaraderie around him. Davies, who himself knows the grind of long-term recovery, joined him on the pitch during his individual session. “Phonzy supported me,” Musiala said with a smile. “The team, the fans, you can see we’re all one big family. The support definitely helps. It gives us extra motivation that the fans miss Phonzy, me and all our injured players.”

That sense of unity has defined Bayern’s atmosphere through a difficult injury phase. Beyond Davies and Musiala, Hiroki Ito also remains in recovery after a metatarsal fracture. Despite the setbacks, the energy at Bayern's training facility remains positive with the sight of Musiala running again serving as a symbolic lift for the squad.

AFPTaking it step-by-step

Musiala’s return is a reminder of Bayern’s faith in its young stars. His journey has been steady, guided by patience and precision. With every stride, the anticipation builds while the Allianz Arena faithful await the moment when number 10 glides across the pitch once more.

The German international’s mindset reflects maturity beyond his years. He’s not in a rush, knowing that recovery is not just physical but mental. “I just want to come back at the right time and help the team again,” he said. With Musiala back, and Davies and Ito nearing their returns, the club can look forward to a fully reinvigorated squad.

Forget Kane: Spurs can use new ENIC cash to sign "best winger in England"

Just five days after the transfer window slammed shut the shock news emerged from Tottenham Hotspur that Daniel Levy would be leaving the club.

It’s the end of an era and whatever you say about the former chairman’s stint at Spurs, he did deliver success. Under his watch, a remarkably impressive new stadium was built, they reached a Champions League final and won the Europa League. Not bad, really, eh?

Sadly, the Lilywhites have largely always been the bridesmaid rather than the bride. They’ve failed to soar to the next level but under Thomas Frank they will hope things change.

Perhaps a big £100m investment could help? Last week, it was announced that ENIC, which, before this transaction, owned nearly 86.91% of Spurs, have provided £100m in new funding to Spurs. The sum has been provided to ENIC via the Lewis family trust which did own 70% of ENIC and 61% of Spurs.

Essentially, ENIC have provided the cash in exchange for shares, increasing its ownership stake in the club, increasing its percentage in Tottenham Hotspur to 87.62%.

The Athletic understand that the £100m may not be added to a transfer war chest, but extra investment can’t he a hindrance. Perhaps there will be some extra room for manoeuvre in the transfer window anyway.

Will a Harry Kane return come about as a result?

Could Harry Kane return to Spurs?

When Kane left north London behind in August 2023, he did so with the blessing of the fanbase.

The club could not provide him with the silverware he craved and so he departed for Bayern Munich having scored 280 times in 435 outings, making him the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

Since heading to Germany, he has taken his game to a whole new level and is now in the conversation to win the Ballon d’Or next year, currently ranking as the fourth favourite to take home the award.

Why? Well, the England skipper has been in remarkable form during 2025/26. He has scored a mind-boggling 18 goals in just ten fixtures, cementing himself as the most prolific forward on the planet.

Despite that, there is a hope that one day he will return to Spurs. Reports in recent months have suggested that they were ready to launch a bid to re-sign their former striker if given encouragement by the player.

Kane’s currrent deal in Germany ends in 2027 and there is a release clause of £56.7m that could reportedly be activated next summer.

Sadly for Spurs supporters, the player could look to extend his terms. Speaking to the press last week, the centre forward commented: “In terms of staying longer I could definitely see that. I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet but if they were to arise I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation.”

It’s safe to say Frank could certainly do with Kane. While the former Brentford boss has made Spurs look like a more organised and defensively sound outfit, they are struggling to score goals.

Four players hold the honour of being the club’s top scorer this term, with Joao Palhinha, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Micky van de Ven all level on three. That rather says it all, really.

That being said, by the time Kane’s deal at Bayern ends, he will be 34. Younger legs will be required.

The Harry Kane alternative Spurs must sign

Bringing back their record scorer to the club would be an incredible way for ENIC to begin the post-Levy era but it’s perhaps not the smartest use of their funds.

A striker will likely be signed within the next year but they must not neglect the flanks either. That’s where Bournemouth talisman, Antoine Semenyo, comes in.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Far-fetched? Quite possibly, but reports emerged last week indicating that Spurs were preparing a move to sign the winger in January, with Frank allegedly making it clear that he is “the perfect fit” for his team.

Few would find a reason not to sign Semenyo in 2026. Erling Haaland aside, he has been the best player in the Premier League this season, scoring six goals and registering three assists in his seven outings to date.

The wide forward has taken his game to a whole new level. In 2024/25, he exited the campaign having scored 13, 11 of which came in the league. He’s currently on course to obliterate that record, rubberstamping precisely why every top side in the division, Spurs included, should be looking to sign him next year.

In the words of former Spurs and England star, Chris Waddle, Semenyo is now “definitely the best winger in England right now”.

Predominantly preferred off the right flank, Mohammed Kudus may not be too pleased about this signing but the summer arrival has the skillset to play off the left and through the middle too.

One has to say; the thought of Kudus, Spurs’ “player of the season” in the words of reporter Alasdair Gold, linking up with Semenyo is a scary thought indeed.

It would, of course, be scary to see him linking up with Kane but that feels like a pipe dream right now. Semenyo is certainly more realistic and he could use Kudus’ marvellous creativity to take him to even greater heights.

Both representing Ghana at international level, there is a pre-existing relationship there both on and off the field.

Kane is every supporter’s dream but Semenyo would be an incredible signing. There is a reason both Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly interested in his services.

Biggest star since Kane: Spurs are brewing "one of England's best talents"

Tottenham Hotspur already have their next biggest England star on Thomas Frank’s books.
