Gary Stead: 'No reason why Henry Nicholls can't make it back'

“This guy has got something about him” – New Zealand head coach talks up rookie Will O’Rourke’s potential

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has insisted that the door is not shut on Henry Nicholls, though the batter has been left out of the squad for the upcoming home Test series against South Africa.Nicholls had made an unbeaten 200 against Sri Lanka in Wellington in March 2023, but apart from that he hasn’t passed 40 in his last 11 Tests. All up, Nicholls has nine Test hundreds, level with former captain Stephen Fleming. Among active New Zealand players, only Tom Latham (13) and Kane Williamson (29) have more Test centuries than Nicholls.”His currency is weight of runs, isn’t it? To do that in domestic cricket and show that he’s the next person in line is still really possible to do,” Stead said. “He’s still relatively young in his career – he’s only early 30s [32] – we definitely don’t see it as the end for him. It’s definitely a setback but there’s no reason why he can’t make it back again.”Related

Stead explained that it was a difficult decision to leave Nicholls out for Rachin Ravindra, who was the breakout star of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.”It’s a very tough decision,” Stead said. “I mean, Henry has been a big part of the Test squad for 56 Tests and so whenever you leave a player out then it weighs heavy with you and it’s a tough decision to make. But we just felt it was time for Rachin in Test cricket and we obviously know the talent he is and feel that he will make a really good fist of it at this stage of his career.”Look, it’s a tough conversation. They are not easy to have. He’s a great person; he always does the little things really well, which you guys would never see. That’s what makes it hard in a decision like this.”Stead: Santner is the best spinner in NZAjaz Patel was New Zealand’s frontline spinner in Bangladesh, but a return to seam-friendly conditions at home means a spin-bowling allrounder will do the job for them. And that spin-bowling allrounder is Mitchell Santner, given his dual ability to both defend and attack. Ravindra and Glenn Phillips are the other spin options for New Zealand.”Mitch Santner, in our opinion right now, is the best spinner in New Zealand,” Stead said. “He’s been bowling beautifully and certainly in New Zealand conditions as well. He provides the options of knowing to hold and attack. I think we’re going to need that throughout the series.”Kyle Jamieson is currently working his way back from injury•Getty Images

Williamson, Blundell, Jamieson ready for first TestStead was also confident of captain Kane Williamson, wicketkeeper Tom Blundell, and fast-bowling allrounder Kyle Jamieson being fit for the first Test against South Africa, which begins in Mount Manganui on February 4. All three players are working their way back from hamstring injuries. On Friday, Jamieson turned out for Canterbury against Wellington in the Super Smash Eliminator, taking 1 for 31 in his four overs to help his team get into the final against Auckland. Blundell, though, did not feature in that game for Wellington.Jamieson might also play for New Zealand XI against the visiting South Africans in a three-day warm-up game, which begins on January 29 at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe’s Oval.”The three guys with injury concerns – Kane, Kyle and Tom – I’ve spoken to them all,” Stead said. “They are all tracking really well. All training hard. Kyle starts playing, Tom Blundell has had a couple of big days of training, which is encouraging that he has got through that without any further feeling in his hamstring. So, we are really confident that him and Kane will be ready for the first Test.”‘Will O’Rourke has got something about him’Will O’Rourke, who is a clone of Jamieson, has been picked only for the second Test in Hamilton, where Stead expects bouncy conditions. O’Rourke’s USP is to generate extra bounce from his tall frame (6’4″).”I think Hamilton… what we saw in white-ball cricket there has got a bit more bounce into it,” Stead said. “Will O’Rourke has certainly bowled well there this year domestically. In terms of Will himself, he’s a young guy who is emerging and obviously emerging pretty quickly. He has the ability to get some good batsmen out with the bounce he gets in particular.”He looks like he’s a handful to most players. You certainly get that feeling from talking to people who face him in the nets as well – this guy has got something about him.”

Finch signs off with a duck but Renegades give their hero a winning farewell

The defeat in the Melbourne derby is a big blow to Stars’ hopes of qualifying for the finals

AAP13-Jan-2024Aaron Finch enjoyed a winning farewell despite a third-ball duck, as his Melbourne Renegades side dealt a massive blow to local rivals Melbourne Stars’ BBL finals hopes.A total of 41,205 people at Marvel Stadium witnessed an anti-climactic finale with the bat from former Australia captain Finch, who came charging down the pitch and skied an easy catch to his old mate Glenn Maxwell at mid-off. Maxwell didn’t celebrate as Finch walked off to great acclaim, raising his bat to acknowledge the ovation from the crowd.Finch, Renegades’ all-time leading scorer, had his team jersey number retired before the game. And Renegades at least gave him the proper send-off. Chasing Stars’ 137 for 8 on a tricky pitch offering assistance to spinners and quicks, they achieved their target with six wickets and 16 balls to spare.

They stumbled in the Power Surge but veteran Shaun Marsh (64 not out off 49 balls) and Jonathan Wells (14 not out off 15) steered them to victory with an unbroken 46-run stand to lift Renegades off the bottom of the table. The loss left fifth-placed Stars a point behind Adelaide Strikers, who will wrap up fourth spot if they beat Sydney Thunder in Canberra on Sunday.Marsh and Jake Fraser-McGurk (42 off 31) played and missed a number of times, as the Stars seamers exploited the favourable conditions, but added 68 for the second wicket after Finch’s fall.Renegades looked in control at the halfway stage at 74 for 1 after taking 16 runs off the tenth over. But they lost three wickets in the Power Surge, which they took immediately after the mid-innings break.Shaun Marsh was solid at the top for Renegades and saw the chase through•Getty ImagesFour Stars players passed 20 in their innings, but Hilton Cartwright (38 off 30 balls) was the only one to pass 30.Finch’s old housemate, Victoria and Australia colleague Maxwell briefly threatened to be a party pooper as he blasted his way to 20 off ten balls. He blasted 16 off three successive balls in Tom Rogers’ second over, but was out the next over.Quicks Rogers and Kane Richardson (2 for 17 off four overs) each picked up a wicket with their first delivery, after Renegades raced to 21 off the first two overs. West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein (2 for 18 off four), playing in the first of just two BBL games for Renegades, extracted significant turn from a receptive pitch.

Mason Mount is still here: Midfielder bags classy goal against Everton to show he can compete with new arrivals as Bryan Mbeumo impresses on debut

United couldn't sign off their pre-season tour of the US with a third win out of three but they still took the trophy after an entertaining match against Everton which showed the exciting things the team are capable of producing in attack but also served as a reminder that they are still a work in progress.

With new signing Bryan Mbeumo making his debut, United played some high-octane football in the first half and took the lead with a penalty from Bruno Fernandes after Amad Diallo had been felled by James Tarkowski following a lightning-quick transition. United had threatened to score earlier in the game but Matheus Cunha lacked the cutting edge from inside the box.

Ruben Amorim's side were thrilling to watch on the break but, unlike in their previous wins in the Summer Series against West Ham and Bournemouth, they looked vulnerable at the back. Jake O'Brien hit the post for Everton before Fernandes' opener after sloppy goalkeeping from Altay Bayindir and the Toffees soon equalised through the excellent Iliman Ndiaye, who pounced in the area seconds after Manuel Ugarte had been robbed of the ball.

Substitute Mount put a much-changed United side back in front in the second half at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta but Everton came right back at them and levelled through a bizarre own goal, the ball deflecting into the net off Ayden Heaven after Amad had tried to cut out a cross.

AdvertisementGetty THE MVP

Mount produced a moment of class to put United back in front, controlling a pass from Fernandes and then switching on to his right foot and curling into the far bottom corner. The strike was reminiscent of Mount's stunning first goal against Athletic Club last season and was a timely reminder of his ability to conjure something magical from thin air. His position in the squad might have looked undermined by the signings of Cunha and Mbeumo but the player who Amorim has declared his love for showed he can still have an important role in the team.

Getty NEW FACES

Mbeumo had an encouraging debut, linking up well with Cunha and Fernandes with some slick passing moves. And yet he failed to mark his first game with a goal as he fired straight at Jordan Pickford after the England No. 1 had spilled a shot from Fernandes into the new man's path.

Cunha sparkled in the first half and really should have given United an early lead but he toe-poked the ball wide, albeit from a tight angle, when he faced down Pickford. The Brazilian has only been at the club for a couple of weeks but he already has a strong understanding with Fernandes and with Amad, who he kept releasing down the right flank.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz, who completed a permanent move this summer after joining on loan from Flamengo in January, was left red-faced when he accidentally nicked the ball from team-mate Beto inside the area just as he was about to fire at goal in the second half.

Amorim didn't try any experiments here and every player he picked either from the start or off the bench was already well-known to fans. Leny Yoro, however, stood out and gave another demonstration that he is going to handsomely pay off his big transfer fee. The 19-year-old Frenchman played on the front foot, dancing around Everton players in the opposing box as well as starting several transitions by swiftly working the ball out from defence.

Is Robert Lewandowski off to Saudi Arabia? Barcelona prepared to sell striker amid enticing interest from several clubs

Barcelona face a critical decision on Robert Lewandowski with several Saudi Pro League clubs eyeing the Polish striker.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Several Saudi Pro League clubs are actively monitoring Lewandowski’s situation at Barcelona, according to a report from . With one year remaining on his contract, the 36-year-old striker is a prime target thanks to his continued goal-scoring form – netting 42 goals in 52 games last season. While Lewandowski is said to be settled in Barcelona and not actively looking for a move, the Catalan club would consider offers if a significant financial package is presented. Barcelona are open to negotiating a transfer, given the scale of Saudi offers and their ongoing financial constraints.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Middle East clubs have stepped up their recruitment of high-profile names from Europe, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and, most recently, Joao Felix already joining the league. Lewandowski’s situation is of particular interest due to his expiring contract and high wages. If an attractive offer comes and the forward expresses intent to leave, Barcelona are unlikely to stand in his way. This stance is further fuelled by the club’s need to manage salary costs and the presence of alternative options such as Ferran Torres, Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Lewandowski recently quit the Poland national team after he was stripped of the captaincy. After a change of coach, however, the 36-year-old is set to be welcomed back into the team and is willing to return without demanding the armband.

Mumbai's batting might up against Punjab's bowling smarts in Mullanpur

Match details

Punjab Kings (eighth) vs Mumbai Indians (ninth)
Mullanpur, 7:30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture – The contrast between Kings and Mumbai

Punjab Kings have only one batter with more than 150 runs this season, but he’s going to miss Thursday’s game with a shoulder injury. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have three over 150 and those who have fewer runs are either middle and lower-order batters or haven’t played enough games in IPL 2024.Mumbai’s openers have given them a kickstart: the 308 runs between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan is the second highest for the first wicket this year; they have been separated in single-digits in only two out of six innings, and have fifty-plus partnerships (including a hundred) in the other four. Their partnership runs have come at more than 11 runs an over. The Kings haven’t had such batting riches. Their regular openers – Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow – have totalled 168 runs at only 8.33. With Dhawan injured for their previous game against Royals, Kings opened with Bairstow and Atharva Taide but there was not much improvement. The contrast doesn’t end there. Mumbai have hit 67 sixes this season, the second highest, while Kings’ 44 is the second lowest. In the powerplay, Mumbai’s 23 sixes and Punjab’s four are at opposite ends of the spectrum.Though Mumbai’s batting is performing much better than Punjab’s, they are just below the Kings near the bottom of the table with four points from six games. And that may be down to the contrast between their bowling units this season.Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s genius (10 wickets at an average of 14.60 and economy of 6.08), Mumbai have one of the poorest performing attacks of the season: their collective average of 35.72 and economy of 10.04 is the third worst among the ten teams. Punjab, on the other hand, have the best bowling average (25.20) and the fourth best economy rate (8.87) this season.Their home venue might have something to do with it. Teams have struggled to start fast in Mullanpur: the powerplay run rate of 7.11 there is the lowest this season, which means Rohit and Ishan will be challenged to give Mumbai their customary quick start on Wednesday.

Which is the best phase to bowl Kagiso Rabada?

Team news and Impact Player strategy

Punjab Kings
Bairstow’s lean run, especially in Mullanpur where he has scores of 9, 0 and 15, could force Kings to consider playing the South African batter Rilee Rossouw. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma have formed a potent threat with the bat lower down the order, so expect the Impact Player tactics to be the same: Ashutosh swapping in or out for Arshdeep Singh or Prabhsimran Singh.Probable XII: 1 Atharva Taide, 2 Jonny Bairstow/Rilee Rossouw, 3 Singh, 4 Sam Curran (capt), 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Shashank Singh, 8 Harpreet Brar, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 , 12 Mumbai Indians
Along with Bumrah, Gerald Coetzee is the only MI bowler to have a sub-ten economy rate in the death overs in IPL 2024. Mumbai have been the third-most expensive side in the phase. Given they have not used a lot of spin, could they be tempted to bring in the Sri Lankan fast bowler Nuwan Thushara for offspinning allrounder Mohammad Nabi?Probable XII: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), , 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Tim David, 7 Romario Shepherd, 8 Mohammad Nabi/ Nuwan Thushara, 9 Shreyas Gopal, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Gerald Coetzee, Rohit Sharma is enjoying his best start to an IPL season•BCCI

In the spotlight: Kagiso Rabada and Rohit Sharma

Not only has Kagiso Rabada been among the wickets this season for Kings, he has done so at an economy under eight – the first time he has conceded less than eight an over since IPL 2020. His nine wickets include seven right-handers and Mumbai have plenty of them. Rabada has been effective in the middle overs, where he has picked up four wickets with an economy of 7.33.Rohit Sharma has been superb for Mumbai this season. Without the burden of captaincy, he has blazed away in the powerplay and is enjoying his best start to an IPL. His tally of 261 is already the highest for him in the first six matches of a season. He has also never scored faster than his strike rate of 167.31 in IPL 2024. He has been good against pace (strike rate of 173.63) as well as spin (152.17) which has made him hard to contain for the opposition.

Stats that matter

  • Rohit will become only the second player after MS Dhoni to play 250 matches in the IPL
  • Kishan has been dismissed three times in 12 balls by Arshdeep Singh in the IPL but has a strike rate of 208.3 against him. Against Rabada though, Kishan has 58 runs off 33 balls for one dismissal.
  • Rohit has a strike rate of 148 against Rabada for two dismissals in the IPL, but in all T20s, he has been dismissed four times in 74 balls for just 89 runs. Against Harshal Patel in the IPL, his head-to-head reads: 27 runs, 23 balls, three dismissals.
  • Rabada against Suryakumar Yadav could be the contest to watch: 94 runs off 52 balls with three dismissals.

Pitch and conditions

Teams winning the toss have opted to chase in Mullanpur, and won two out of three games this season. The one time they lost, Kings fell only two runs short against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The pitches have largely been batting-friendly, and expect the trend to continue in the evening game on Thursday.

“I have known Hardik for a decade, and he is a very tough guy. Something like this is only going to motivate him. The way he is taking it so far is tremendous and very inspiring for all of us. Seeing it on a daily basis is not easy, but the guy is really strong.”
“Brar has been our successful bowler if you look at his economy or wicket-taking ability. Last game, he bowled less dot balls but Livi [Liam Livingstone] has bowled more dot balls and taken more wickets. Brar will come back stronger, he plays his domestic cricket on the same ground. He will come back stronger.”

Bumrah six-for, Jaiswal 209 put India on top

India’s first-innings lead of 143 had been stretched to 171 by the close after England were bowled out for 253

Andrew Miller03-Feb-20243:23

Manjrekar on Bumrah’s six-for: ‘One of the best performances in India’

India 396 (Jaiswal 209) and 28 for 0 (Jaiswal 15*, Rohit 13*) lead England 253 (Crawley 76, Bumrah 6-45) by 171 runsBen Stokes’ expression said it all. For the second time in as many first-innings counterattacks, all he could do was shrug his shoulders and marvel at the genius of the man who’d just had his measure, as Jasprit Bumrah cut short another spirited display from England’s captain, to cap a performance that transcended the conditions that he’d been granted. In the midst of India’s surprise loss in Hyderabad, Bumrah’s six wickets across two innings had been a warning as to where the true threat in India’s attack would lie. So it proved at Visakhapatnam on what had been touted as a spinners’ paradise, as Bumrah piled that same haul into one sensational display, springing the trap on England’s batters with the insuperable figures of 6 for 45 in 15.5 overs. All six of those came in the space of 71 deliveries across his final three micro-spells – a howling, hustling display of express-paced reverse swing in which the cream of England’s batting were simply bereft of answers. Joe Root’s audible groan as he snicked an outswinger to first slip, having aligned himself to Bumrah’s initial shape into his pads, confirmed the extent to which even England’s kingpin had been outplayed, but it was Bumrah’s subsequent extraction of England’s first-Test hero Ollie Pope – blasted from the crease by an unplayable inswinging yorker – which proved that, just occasionally, the danger is too acute even for this team to keep running towards it.Related

Jimmy vs Jaiswal: a who-is-gonna-do-it thriller

Jaiswal wants to 'double it up and keep going'

Stats – Jaiswal and Lara in a club of their own

It was a one-man show to match that which Yashasvi Jaiswal had completed for India in the morning session, as he converted his overnight 179 to an epic 209 from 290 balls, in an innings in which no other batter passed 34. Though Bumrah was backed up in timeless flat-deck fashion by the wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav – whose sharp-turning wiles claimed three of the other four wickets to fall – the extent to which he up-ended this contest is perhaps best expressed by the serenity of England’s progress outside of his killer burst. While Zak Crawley was in command of England’s tempo, in a long-levered knock of 76 from 78 balls that included a 16-run dispatching of Bumrah’s fourth and final new-ball over, England seemed on course to make India pay for another first innings in which they’d failed to bat their opponents out of contention. With James Anderson rolling back the years once more to finish a majestic performance with 3 for 47 in 25 overs, it seemed a total of 396 was very much game on. In hindsight, of course, the sight of one masterful swing bowler transcending the conditions should have been taken as proof that another would surely follow suit.Nevertheless, England gave it a good go for as long as they realistically could. On a surface offering increasingly steepling bounce, England were obliged to tweak their game-plans, with the reverse-sweep that was such a feature at Hyderabad now fraught with danger and rarely unfurled. And in Crawley’s case, that meant using his 6’5″ reach to smother any danger at source, with full-faced drives to the straighter deliveries and pounding slog-sweeps when the bowlers strayed outside off. This approach included another proactive tilt at the new ball, with England marching along to 59 in ten overs before Ben Duckett poked Kuldeep to silly point to depart for 21 for 17. Pope survived on his wits for the initial 10 runs of his innings, stretching forward with near-desperation in a display that had far more in common with his 1 from 11 at Hyderabad rather than his subsequent 196, but Crawley was a class apart, much as he had been in a similarly one-man display in Ahmedabad on the 2021 tour.By the time he had reached 72, Crawley had scored a half-century in boundaries alone – the last of which, a half-tracker punched past cover, caused Ashwin to be pulled from the attack nursing the uncharacteristically tatty figures of 8-0-40-0. It meant England had cruised past 100 at a rate in excess of five an over, and when Axar Patel belatedly entered the attack after drinks to be shovelled second-ball through midwicket for four, it was clear Crawley was not about to slow down.Zak Crawley brought up a 52-ball half-century•BCCIUnfortunately for him, and for England, Axar’s next ball was pushed a fraction wider outside off, and Crawley’s ambitious hack took a leading edge to be brilliantly caught by Shreyas Iyer, running back from point. At 114 for 2, the time was nigh to recall Bumrah to greet the incoming Root – especially given that a solitary over from Mukesh before the drinks break had confirmed that the ball was indeed tailing. What followed was nothing short of a masterclass.Even amid the carnage, however, England’s spirit wasn’t completely broken. Jonny Bairstow brawled with intent to reach 24 not out at tea, albeit the bulk of his innings had been compiled while Bumrah was taking a breather – of his first 28 deliveries, their only meeting had been his very first ball, and that had been another inswinging yorker that almost extracted a review for lbw. Straight after the break, Bumrah was back once more, and his fourth ball of the session was scuffed to Gill at first slip.Ben Foakes came and went without much resistance as Kuldeep bowled him round his outside edge for 6, while Rehan Ahmed’s attempt at a counterattack ended with a toe-ended slap to midwicket. But Stokes, typically watchful at first and inching through the gears as the wickets slipped away around him, found an ally in Tom Hartley to launch a late counterattack of 47 in 40 balls for the eighth wicket – with Mukesh’s ugly figures of 0 for 44 in seven overs proving that an ability to bowl reverse-swing was not remotely the same as harnessing it.Each man landed a slog-sweep for six in consecutive overs, with Stokes’ off Ashwin confirming that he’d go wicketless in an innings in India for just the sixth time in his Test career. But back came Bumrah with a job to finish, and two balls later, back went Stokes’ off stump as the ball snuck low past a half-formed block. The Stokes wicket was Bumrah’s 150th in Tests, and by the time he had mopped up Hartley and Anderson, his average had plummeted to an extraordinary 20.28, a figure that no bowler with that many wickets has matched since the great SF Barnes, more than a century ago. If ever there was proof that we are witnessing a generational talent among fast bowlers, the names in his wake – Marshall, Garner, Ambrose et al – amply confirm it.By the close, India’s first-innings lead of 143 had been stretched to 171 without further loss in five overs, with Jaiswal back where he had started the day, with his captain Rohit Sharma alongside him, feasting on perhaps the first demoralised passage of play that England have allowed to slip into their endlessly optimistic attitude.
