New South Wales quick Ben Dwarshuis claimed three wickets as Victoria’s disastrous start to the Sheffield Shield season continued after suffering another collapse on a truncated opening day at the MCG.Play did not begin until 1pm with the opening session lost due to a wet outfield after overnight rain. Victoria lost 5 for 46 in the final session with the recalled Dwarshuis claiming three wickets including the key scalp of Peter Handscomb to a poorly executed pull shot, while the in-form Matt Short was brilliantly run out by substitute Chris Green following a terrible yes-no call from Sam Harper.Related

Nathan Lyon went wicketless but bowled tightly through 16 overs on his return to first-class cricket as he continues his comeback from the Ashes-ending calf injury.Victoria’s top-order made plenty of starts with Handscomb, Travis Dean, Will Pucovski and Short all passing 25 but none reached 50 as they handed NSW the ascendency having been sent into bat.Test hopeful Marcus Harris’ start to the season has mirrored that of his team’s. He fell for a first-ball duck to add to his scores of 0 and 10 in his only other Shield appearance so far this year after missing Victoria’s opening match of the season. This time he fell caught at short leg, prodding forward to a delivery from Chris Tremain that jagged off the seam. He got an inside edge onto pad and it ballooned to Ryan Hackney at short leg.Pucovski, batting at No. 3 on return after being rested from the loss to Queensland, was nearly out in identical fashion but Hackney was unable to get his hand under the ball as he dived forward onto the pitch. Pucovski should have also been out on 10 when he edged Dwarshuis behind but wicketkeeper Matthew Gilkes was wrong-footed and he grassed the relatively straight-forward chance diving to his right.Pucovski and Dean ground out a 68-run stand in nearly 35 overs on a tricky surface that had plenty of live green grass. Both men faced more than a hundred balls and managed just two boundaries apiece on the soft, slow outfield. Pucovski finally fell to Jackson Bird, edging behind trying to defend from the crease.Dean continued to grind alongside Handscomb who was far more fluent. But Dean fell to an innocuous Moises Henriques delivery, guiding it to slip with anchored feet after facing 154 deliveries for his 39.Handscomb played nicely for his 43 but his dismissal sparked a disastrous collapse. He played an uncharacteristic pull shot while setting up square on to Dwarshuis from around the wicket. The short ball was wide of off stump and he top-edged it to square leg trying to drag it over midwicket.Captain Will Sutherland also fell to a short ball trap from Dwarshuis, spooning a catch to deep backward square with two men placed for the exact shot.Things went from bad to worse when Short was run out having looked in good touch. Harper pulled a ball into the short leg fielder and it ricocheted towards midwicket, Harper called ‘yes’ and then ‘no’ as he realised Green was swooping. Short took off to the initial call and was forced to scramble back but Green’s brilliant direct hit beat his desperate dive.Dwarshuis had Mitch Perry caught behind shortly after before Fergus O’Neill was trapped plumb infront by Tremain in the final over of the day with the lights in full effect.

BBC Sport claims Palace will 'almost certainly' launch a legal fight against any decision to ban them from next season's Europa League competition. UEFA were due to reveal on June 27 whether last season's FA Cup winners were cleared to play in the tournament, as they await to find out if they have breached multi-club ownership rules in relation to co-owner John Textor's involvement at the club and Lyon.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palace lifted their first-ever major trophy with their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May but the dream of playing in Europe next season could be taken from them. The Eagles are said to be growing 'increasingly exasperated' at the delay in UEFA's ruling and feel they are being 'unfairly treated'.

Textor, who has agreed to sell his 43 per cent stake at Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, owns 77 per cent of Lyon through his Eagle Football Group company. Despite him resigning from the leadership board at the French team, who have just been relegated to Ligue 2 due to the club's poor finances, and trying to move on from the Eagles, he could cost the Premier League team European football next term.

ATHLETICO ABRE BOA VANTAGEM NO INÍCIO

GOIÁS ADOTA POSTURA OFENSIVA E COLOCA FOGO NO JOGO

A report by Portuguese newspaper , suggests the summer's longest-running transfer saga shows no sign of resolution. While Arsenal, Sporting and Gyokeres' representatives have agreed an initial fee of €70m (£61m/$82m) plus €10m in add-ons (£8.7m/$11.6m) for the player's services, the terms surrounding the additional fees have yet to be ironed out.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sporting want those terms to be easily achievable, a request which Arsenal has reportedly resisted. reports that just €3m of those add-ons are considered "easily achieveable" by the selling club. That disconnect is apparently enough to ensure the deal is "at risk of collapse," with Record reporting that Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya may offer a public intervention to keep the deal alive.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Gyokeres was considered to be one of Europe's hottest properties heading into the summer transfer window, however it quickly became apparent that Arsenal and Manchester United were the only credible suitors for his signature. As the Gunners pulled ahead in the chase, questions over the Swede's ability to cut it in the Premier League have increased. Despite that, he remains sure of his abilities, saying in a recent interview that he belonged at the top table with the likes of Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.

The 27-year-old has pushed for this move. On Sunday, he declined to return to Sporting's pre-season training, signalling his desire for the transfer to go ahead. With that in mind, a public statement urging negotiations between his current and prospective employers could well be coming.

Warner launches his farewell Test series with dominant Perth century

David Warner launched his Test cricket swansong with a belligerent century on day one to dominate an inexperienced Pakistan attack as Australia gained an early stranglehold of the series-opener at Optus Stadium.Warner reached his 26th Test ton late in the second session with an upper cut to the boundary to trigger his trademark leaping celebration. He had come into the match on the back of a recent public spat with former team-mate and adopted local Mitchell Johnson, who was at the ground.Warner’s form at Test level had long been questioned having previously scored just one century over the last three years. But the faith instilled in Warner, who plans to retire from Test cricket at the end of the series, has paid off as he passed Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke to move into fifth place on Australia’s run scoring list.Related

Warner has now scored six Test centuries against Pakistan with an average of almost 90. It was a tough start for new captain Shan Masood, whose optimism heading into the series quickly eroded after a ragged performance from his team in the field.Bounce and pace was evident on a surface with a smattering of grass covering as occasional deliveries reared. But Pakistan’s quicks did not bowl consistently on a length and there were too many full deliveries which were treated with disdain from Warner.Pakistan’s hierarchy are already facing question marks after not selecting a specialist spinner and opting for debutant quicks Jamal and Khurram Shahzad ahead of veteran Hasan Ali.But Shahzad justified his selection with an impressive spell after lunch, where he made the ball jag around and bowled tightly. He was rewarded in the final session after having a well-set Steven Smith caught behind on 31 with a superb delivery.Jamal, however, was wayward but ended as Pakistan’s only multiple wicket-taker having also claimed Travis Head who was caught at fly slip on 40 in a well-worked plan.David Warner launched a six over long leg•Getty Images

Much of the burden fell on spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, who bowled 13 of Pakistan’s first 32 overs. He was unlucky early and nudged 140kph, but erred with his accuracy at times and his only wicket was opener Usman Khawaja for 41.Afridi, who finished with 1 for 75 off 19 overs, was not able to trouble Warner consistently and suffered the ignominy of being carted for an extraordinary scoop shot for six just before lunch.Warner has dominated Australia’s innings so far with no other batter converting starts. He vindicated Pat Cummins’ decision to bat first on a hard surface which has provided some assistance to the quicks. Warner smashed 72 runs in a dominant first session alongside Khawaja as they produced Australia’s first century opening partnership in home Tests in 26 innings. They scored freely but also had to survive an opening six-over burst from Afridi on a surface livelier than during last year’s dreary corresponding Test between Australia and West Indies.Khawaja played second fiddle and was dropped on 21 by Abdullah Shafique running back from the slips. He came into the match under the spotlight after not being allowed to wear shoes which expressed humanitarian views, but wore a black armband.Khawaja succumbed to a Pakistan fightback after lunch, but Warner’s heroics put Australia in firm control.A full-strength Australia went in as expected with Marsh retaining his spot over Western Australia team-mate Cameron Green. Frontline spinner Nathan Lyon makes his return from the calf injury that cut short his Ashes campaign. He will have to wait to bowl with Lyon four away from his 500th Test wicket. There had been a big marketing campaign ahead of the Test after underwhelming crowd numbers in the previous three Tests played at the 60,000 capacity Optus Stadium. The crowd steadily built to 16,259 fans for the fourth Test match played at Optus Stadium with the newly installed three-tiered hill – aiming to mimic the WACA’s famous grass banks – filling up amid increased shade as the day wore on.They would have been satisfied with what they saw as Australia expectedly gained control.
