Stoneman resists barnstorming Barker

Title contenders in any team sport are often characterised as much by an aversion to defeat as a thirst for victory. In the first three days of this match Warwickshire’s cricketers have shown their desire to win the game; in the final three sessions Durham’s players have a chance to further demonstrate their hatred of losing it. It is almost certainly all that is left to the visitors and it is worth more than five points. In the recent era known as BB (Before Barker) Durham welcomed this fixture, winning seven of the nine Championship games played between the sides. Since then they have lost four of the last six. That will be five in seven on Wednesday evening unless Paul Collingwood’s batsmen continue their prolonged resistance to an attack that has generally kept the ball up to the bat on an excellent pitch and accepted as collateral punishment the leaking of boundaries attached to this approach.Carrying Durham’s standard in the second innings was Mark Stoneman, whose technically correct 83 not out was a 161-ball act of penance for his carelessness in getting out on Tuesday evening. Also wearing a hair-shirt was Collingwood, although he has little reason for self-reproach after being last man out for 68 when having a swipe at Boyd Rankin in Durham’s first innings. When this pair trooped off at 6.50pm, they had helped reduce their side’s 265-run deficit to a manageable 76. While there is still work to be done to save the game, at least a start has been madeFor Warwickshire it was, yet again, Keith Barker who led his side’s thorough examination of the defensive technique of Durham’s top and middle order; and in the first half of the day Collingwood’s men failed the test. The left-arm seamer got rid of three more batsmen as Durham lost their last seven wickets for 135 runs in a mere 25.5 overs. Having then had the luncheon interval in which to rehydrate and recover, Barker was ready to lead his side’s attack when the follow-on was enforced. In his second over he removed Keaton Jennings, who completed a poor match by limply edging a catch to Rikki Clarke at slip; in his fifth he had Scott Borthwick lbw for 14 when a ball nipped back a shade and struck the rear leg. And there was still time for Barker to return and have Michael Richardson caught by Varun Chopra at slip for 47 after the Durham right-hander had added 72 with Stoneman for the third wicket in 18 overs. Calum MacLeod then put on a further 64 with the opener before he gloved a catch to Clarke at slip when unable to avoid a hostile delivery from Rankin who was then bowling around the wicket. Stoneman and Collingwood took care of business for the last ten overs of a long rain-interrupted day.Indeed, weather had provided a curious backcloth to the cricket. The wicket of Richardson fell just before the third and last break but there seems no doubt that this third day escaped comparatively unscathed in losing just 16 overs. Like 19th century American settlers, Durham’s players looked westwards with hope in their hearts but the expected rain did not arrive. Heavy showers had been confidently forecast yet while it poured elsewhere in the Midlands, at both Wantage and Grace Roads for example, Edgbaston’s Pershore Road remained mostly dry. Rather in the manner of pageboys in Shakespeare’s history plays, the groundstaff waited by the covers, doing little, saying nothing, but available to spring into action if summoned. They saw some pretty ropey batting in the morning session, when Durham declined from 50 for 3 to 182 for 8, 66 of the runs coming from the bat of Collingwood who at last found a stubborn partner in the No. 10 Chris Rushworth. Richard Jones took the first wicket when he bowled MacLeod off the inside edge with the fourth ball of the day. Barker then removed Richardson, caught at slip, Mustard, lbw for a golden duck, and Coughlin, middle stump uprooted, all in just six balls before John Hastings was leg before to Clarke for 14. That left Durham on 125 for 8 and people were wondering about a three-day finish.Instead they could enjoy the sight of Stoneman, middling a few, smearing others, but sticking around regardless.”We’re still in it and if we can now get a good session or two sessions in, we’ll have the chance of a few more points than we probably expected at the start of the day,” he said. “I’ve felt really good this season and ironically this is the worst I’ve felt at the start of an innings. Maybe I’ve gone at balls a little bit hard in the leave alone area. It was nice to have the opportunity to bat time with no pressure to set the game up, just take each ball as it comes.”One person unlikely to be bowling those balls, however, is Jones, who has aggravated a foot injury and is unlikely to take any part on the final day. That represents something of a fillip for Durham, who may need all the help they can get if they are to secure the draw. Although as Collingwood and Stoneman might observe, it is self-help that brings cricketers their greatest satisfaction.

Unbeaten half centuries from Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin set up West Indies Women’s 18-run win (D/L method) over Sri Lanka Women to give their team a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.Opting to bat, Kycia Knight (34) and Hayley Matthews (22) put on 49 before Matthews was bowled by left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari. Five overs later, Kumari struck again to remove Knight and captain Merissa Aguilleira in the space of three balls.Taylor, who scored nine boundaries in her 112-ball 89 not out, and Dottin then put on an unbroken 151-run stand in 28 overs for the fourth wicket to steer West Indies women to 215. Dottin’s 69 not out, her second half-century of the series, included five fours and a six.Sri Lanka women slumped to 58 for 3 and then 99 for 4 in reply before rain halted play in the 25th over. They lost Eshani Lokusuriyage to Taylor in the first ball after resumption. Then, Nipuni Hansika, who remained unbeaten on 50 off 71 balls, and Dilani Manodara added 41 runs in 8.4 overs as Sri Lanka women pursued a revised target of 189 in 40.2 overs. However, after Manodara was bowled by Afy Fletcher, Sri Lanka women lost wickets regularly to finish on 170 for 8.Taylor later said it was an important victory as it gained them valuable points on the ICC women’s championship table.

Vitória e recorde! Flamengo bate a Chape e alcança maior pontuação de um líder na 23ª rodada

MatériaMais Notícias

Deu a lógica!

Mustafizur's five-for leads thumping win

On the tenth anniversary of their famous win over Australia in Cardiff, Bangladesh thumped a full-strength Indian team in front of a raucous Mirpur crowd

On the 10th anniversary of their famous win over Australia in Cardiff, Bangladesh thumped a full-strength Indian team in front of a raucous Mirpur crowd. Nineteen-year-old Mustafizur Rahman keeled over India’s batsmen with an assortment of cutters to become the second Bangladesh bowler after Taskin Ahmed to claim a five-wicket haul on debut. His performance came after a rapid 102-run opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar had formed the centrepiece of Bangladesh’s 307, their highest against India in ODIs.The 79-run victory, only their fourth against India, meant Bangladesh needed to win only one out of their next five ODIs to cement their spot in the 2017 Champions Trophy, which will be contested by the top-eight-ranked ODI sides as of September 30, 2015.This was Bangladesh’s ninth straight win at home, but for the first 15 overs of the second innings it seemed the streak would be broken. After an impressive start by Mustafizur and Taskin, Bangladesh looked like they were buckling under the experience and the class of the Indian batting. Rohit Sharma settled down and brought up his fifty off 53 balls, and Shikhar Dhawan was dropped twice by Mushfiqur Rahim.Taskin, whose debut five-for last year came in a defeat, began the turnaround when asked to come back for a second spell. After missing the first two, Mushfiqur made amends, pouching Dhawan and Virat Kohli, both batsmen undone by extra bounce from Taskin. The wickets were set up by tight and intense bowling. Tasking bounded in and kept bowling the in-between length away from the batsmen’s reach. The pressure contributed to the next two wickets, craftily snapped by Mustafizur. The pressure rose with every dot and diving save in the field until a period of 10 runs off 29 balls culminated in Rohit’s failing to read an offcutter from Mustafizur. Ajinkya Rahane was tied down similarly and succumbed to another offcutter, for nine off 27. That Rahane wicket reduced India to 115 for 4, and Bangladesh knew MS Dhoni’s wicket could be the game. Drama was to follow.Mustafizur had to leave the field for a while after colliding with Dhoni in the middle of the pitch, but arguably Bangladesh’s best player of all time, Shakib Al Hasan, took over the baton. Bangladesh celebrated angrily when Shakib drew an edge from Dhoni, which Mushfiqur took beautifully to redeem himself after the earlier drops. If there was indignation palpable at the man who knocked out their hero of the night, Bangladesh found a poetic end as Mustafizur returned to snuff out whatever remote chance India had by dismissing Suresh Raina and R Ashwin off successive balls. He could have become only the second bowler after Fidel Edwards to claim a six-for on ODI debut had he hung onto a return catch off his penultimate delivery. However, he had done enough and finished with outstanding figures of 9.2-1-50-5.The day had begun in similar vein for Bangladesh. In rare sunlight after some bleak weather, Tamim and Sarkar set to work immediately after Mashrafe Mortaza chose to bat, launching a relentless onslaught on the Indian bowlers. Bangladesh soared past 100 off only 79 balls, their fastest against a top-eight team. Tamim raced down the track to the fifth ball of the match, and though he inside-edged it towards fine leg, he had signalled Bangladesh’s intent. They weren’t going to hold back.Tamim found his groove quickly, hitting three fours and a six off Umesh Yadav in the sixth over. The first one was edged but did not carry to Dhawan at wide first slip, the second was lashed over point, the next pulled powerfully before the over ended with a belt over covers as Tamim brought back memories of assaulting Zaheer Khan in the 2007 World Cup.Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav erred on the pads, which was the theme of the early part of the innings and Dhoni was forced to bring his lead spinner – Ashwin – as early as the eighth over. The opening pair was separated in the 14th over by some indecision between the wickets, Raina’s accurate arm cutting short Sarkar’s promising innings at 54.Tamim reached a fifty too before a drizzle grew heavier, resulting in a delay of about an hour. It catalysed a shift in momentum with Ashwin striking thrice in four overs after the resumption. Ashwin had an able ally in Raina who settled into an asphyxiating rhythm in an uninterrupted spell, which read: 10-0-40-0.Sabbir Rahman, though, combined well with Shakib, assembling 83 runs in 14.2 overs before Ravindra Jadeja bowled Sabbir with a signature flat darter. Shakib could have also been dismissed on 38 had Jadeja held onto a tough return catch. Shakib would add 14 more before perishing to Umesh.Bhuvneshwar and Umesh tightened things up at the death, giving away only 35 while picking up four wickets in the last five overs. However, late cameos from Mashrafe and Nasir hauled Bangladesh to their second 300-plus score in four ODIs. Interviewed at the innings break, Shakib said that Bangladesh were 25 runs short. But as it turned out, they had ended with 79 more, capping off the night in a mood of revelry with Taskin and Mashrafe reprising their chest-bump from the World Cup.

Harris loses final battle of wounded knee

Ryan Harris revealed that scans showed he had a cracked right tibia as a result of the knee injury that has forced him into retirement

In the end, Ryan Harris’ right knee was in such a bad way that he broke his leg trying to bowl on it. An emotional Harris revealed that scans showed a cracked tibia, the result of his right leg crunching down on to the turf on a knee that had long since lost the sort of cartilage and other tissue meant to cushion the impact. The serious nature of the injury and its implications finally compelled Harris to draw the curtain on his career, after a day of conversations with the Australia’s long-time physio Alex Kountouris – also on his last tour – and the doctor Peter Brukner. Together with Harris’ surgeon David Young, they gently ushered Harris towards a decision to give up the game that was every bit as painful as trying to bowl with a broken leg.”There’s a crack in the tibia, I’ve got a little part in the top of the shin that’s worn a hole at the top of the tibia that’s caused the crack, from the bone on bone wearing away,” Harris said. “I’ve had pain in this area before, and when I stood in front of the press in Kent last week I was playing five Tests. It was the next day that it jagged, I felt something one of the balls and there was a clicking.”It’s obviously knocked something and it’s come to this and the pain I’ve had in it, partly in that game and before I tried to bowl out here was terrible. I knew something wasn’t right but that’s the reason why. I need surgery to fix it, I need a bone graft to get some bone in there and fix that and I’ve been told – I’ve never had that done before – it’s a slow process that pointed me to this decision.”My surgeon David Young, he didn’t say in as many words that I should retire but he said it was going to be very hard. It wasn’t great after that phone call. But sitting and talking to Dr Brukner and Alex, they gave me some pretty good advice and the word retire was used. It was a word I didn’t want to hear but deep down I think I knew it was coming.”For all that pain, for all that discomfort and for all the lonely gym sessions a rehabilitation would have asked him to endure, Harris still thought seriously about trying again, even though he would have been 36 by the time the process was complete, with no guarantee it would allow him to bowl at his best. There were also concerns about whether Harris could do himself permanent damage that would haunt him in retirement.”I nearly blew my head up yesterday thinking there’s got to be a way I can get past this again, I’ve done it before,” he said. “But the other side of my head was saying last time was a struggle … potentially it was four to five months minimum before I could probably run again and I’d be 36 by then. It was just going to be too hard for me and by then getting back into this side was, I think, going to be impossible as well, with the guys we’ve got here.”Mentally I just don’t think I could … after speaking to my wife, she saw what I went through, what I’ve just finished and she said you can’t get through that again. The way it was with the bone and everything it made me think, and that was in my thoughts last night, about wanting to run around with my son Carter and hopefully a couple more we may want to have. Walking around the golf course is very important as well, I want to do that, otherwise I’m going to turn into a very large person.”Harris’ desire to keep playing was driven largely by his sheer love of spending time around the Australia dressing room, a yearning that is often referred to by players in their latter days but never with more feeling than the 35-year-old fast bowler used here. It was why he found it almost unbearably hard to break the news to the team, despite plenty of time to run his words through his head.”I thought I had it covered, to be honest, when I got there,” he said. “We had a 50-minute bus trip on the way here and I played out in my mind what I was going to say and none of it went to plan, I barely could talk. That would be one of the hardest things I’ve had to do when it comes to my career, that sort of stuff. Obviously the playing part is to me very important but what most people would say when you get to this stage, the part you miss most are the guys you played with.”And I tried to say to the guys this morning obviously that’s part of the reason why you play the game. You know when you go out on the field you have blokes behind you and you know when you come in the rooms the guys that aren’t playing they’re behind you, the coaching staff are behind you and I think that’s the part I’m going to miss the most.”The hard thing for me was getting through the last four months but I knew that at the end was this carrot to play in the Ashes and that’s what kept me going. We all bowl in pain, I’ve just had a problem with my knee – it was sore. Anyone who has sat in this position has probably said it many times but you want to do it for the rest of your life. It’s just not possible. As I’ve said a number of times it’s the best job in the world.”The captain Michael Clarke had little trouble quantifying what Australia will miss with Harris. One statistic that stands out about Harris is the one that Australia will now have to surmount without him in England. Australia won 16 of the 27 Test matches Harris played between 2010 and 2015, the ratio of a great team. Of the 29 matches he missed, they won only 11.”He is my No. 1 picked bowler, in any team I’ve played with,” Clarke said. “Any time I’ve asked him to do a job he’s done it. If I asked him to run through a brick wall for this team, I think he’d have a crack at it. He’s always worn his heart on his sleeve and he’s always given his best not just to Australian cricket but Queensland and South Australia, every team he’s played with.”He loves winning as much as I do and that’s a great trait to have. There is no doubt we will miss him but as I said to ‘Rhino’ this morning, I think it’s really important for us to celebrate what has been an amazing career. He says 27 Tests, to me it’s felt like 100. I don’t remember playing a Test match without him. That’s how fond my memories are of how great a bowler he’s been. His statistics speak for themselves. He’s as good as anyone to play for Australia.”As good, and as brave.
