A grande aposta do Furacão é Marco Ruben.

Harris bowls Australia to last-gasp win

The Report by Brydon Coverdale05-Mar-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRyan Harris goes under the knife for knee surgery after this series – he does not know what the future holds. He may play Test cricket again, but at 34 there are no guarantees. Whatever happens, he has delivered one of the great triumphs in Australia’s recent Test history, bowling the team to a series victory over South Africa, the world’s No.1-ranked side, when it seemed almost inevitable that Graeme Smith would be farewelled by his men with a fighting, fitting draw.Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn batted together for 75 minutes as Australia sought the two remaining wickets they needed for victory and as the shadows grew longer, the looks on the faces of Michael Clarke and his men became more desperate. With five overs left, Clarke asked Harris for one last effort and he delivered, yorking Steyn first ball and then slipping one past Morne Morkel’s bat two balls later to clatter the off stump and deliver a 245-run win, and a 2-1 series success.Harris finished with 4 for 32 from 24.3 overs, a remarkable achievement for a man who looked spent. At times throughout the day he was hobbling and he pulled up in his delivery stride once late in the day, stretching and checking on his knee as he walked back to his mark again. Mitchell Johnson picked up three wickets but Harris was the man who delivered when it mattered most, including by getting rid of the stonewalling AB de Villiers after lunch.Ryan Harris delivered for Michael Clarke on the last day•Getty Images

For much of the day it seemed that South Africa might just pull off one last draw for Smith. Under his leadership they won a lot but just as notable has been their ability not to lose. Their last series defeat before this was against Australia five years ago. Smith will leave the game having lost only two of his last 27 Test series as captain. That is some sort of record. In the end, his men were unable to keep the Australians out for long enough. That a day on which only 194 runs were scored in 93.3 overs could be so gripping is encouraging for Test cricket. This day was never going to be about the runs; South Africa could have batted until day seven and not reached their target of 511. It was simply a question of wickets – could Australia claim the six they needed throughout the day. South Africa’s ability to bat out a draw in similar circumstances in Adelaide a year and a half ago suggested that it would be tough work. And as in Adelaide, de Villiers and Faf du Plessis did their best to deny Australia. They came together after the nightwatchman Kyle Abbott frustrated the Australians during a near two-hour innings of defiant defence. At times when he faced Johnson all nine fielders were in catching positions. Eventually he fell for 7 from 89 balls when he shouldered arms to a James Pattinson ball that nipped in and clipped the top of off stump.De Villiers was laborious but effective for South Africa’s purposes, using up 326 minutes and 228 balls for his 43. Harris was the man who got rid of de Villiers, who pushed half-heartedly outside off stump and got a thick edge behind off a ball that nipped away just enough off the seam. It was a vital breakthrough after lunch, although an equally important one came just before tea when Steven Smith struck in the first ball of a new spell, drifting one in and turning it just enough to have du Plessis lbw for 47.That left four wickets needed in the final session. Worryingly for Clarke, Nathan Lyon was having no impact, just as had been the case in that Adelaide draw. At times he bowled too quick, and like his colleagues, offered up too many balls that the South Africans could leave. The Australians became frazzled and frayed, but Clarke managed to manufacture a wicket by placing a leg slip, Lyon, who pouched a leg glance off Johnson to end JP Duminy’s innings on 43.But Philander and Steyn were not going to fold quickly. Philander was the only South African who really played his shots throughout the final day, but rarely did he create a chance. Even more impressive was that he spent part of the innings battling a painful blow to his hand after an accidental beamer from Pattinson jammed him on the right glove. Another glove-related incident was to come.Immediately before the final hour began, the Australians won an out decision from Aleem Dar when Johnson banged in a short ball that tickled Philander’s thumb on the way to being caught, but Philander asked for a review. The third umpire, Richard Illingworth, felt there was enough evidence that Philander’s hand was off the bat at the time when the ball struck his glove and overturned the decision, much to the dismay of the Australians, and things really heated up on the field after that.Whatever Clarke tried did not seem to work. Philander and Steyn just batted on and on. The bowlers wearied, and sent down ball after ball that could be left alone. Until Clarke asked Harris to finish the job. Two wickets in three balls, both hitting the stumps. An emotional series win for Australia, whose summer ended with seven wins and one loss. A gut-wrenching loss for Smith in his final match. But mostly, it was a fittingly tight way for the campaign to end. Australia had the better of the series, but South Africa made them earn it. It was not until the last five overs of the last hour of the last day of the last Test of the series that the outcome was determined. And if every Test series was like that, the game would be in pretty good shape.

BCCI to meet before next court hearing

The BCCI will hold an emergent working committee meeting on April 20 to discuss the future course of action with regard to the Supreme Court hearing concerning corruption allegations in the IPL

Amol Karhadkar17-Apr-2014The BCCI will hold an emergent working committee meeting on April 20 to discuss the future course of action with regard to the Supreme Court hearing concerning corruption allegations in the IPL. The meeting, to be held at 3pm at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, was convened following requests from several state associations following the Supreme Court’s observations against the BCCI and its ousted president N Srinivasan on April 16.The meeting will force some BCCI officials to change their travel plans. The top officials are in the UAE for the start of the IPL and were to return to India on April 23. It was confirmed that BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel and vice-president Shivlal Yadav, who has been given charge of all the board’s affairs – apart from the IPL – during Srinivasan’s absence, will attend the working committee meeting. It remains to be seen whether Sunil Gavaskar, who was included in the working committee following his appointment as the BCCI interim president, will attend the meeting. After the court turned down Srinivasan’s plea to be reinstated as the BCCI president, the board’s counsel CA Sundaram said it preferred that the police continue with the probe into corruption allegations. The court, however, said it was not inclined towards a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe because that would tarnish the image of the cricketers. “In the interest of cricket, we don’t want to do it. But if you insist, we will give it (probe) to the CBI. We are not inclined. But if we are compelled, we will do it. We want to save cricket and reputation of cricketers. We will lay down the rules. Don’t protest.”Sundaram then said that if the allegations needed to be answered, the BCCI should get copies of the depositions that MS Dhoni and Srinivasan made to the Mudgal Committee, which presented its report on alleged IPL corruption to the Supreme Court. The court responded: “Think and answer. A quick answer will cost your client a lot.” This prompted a counsel representing Srinivasan to seek more time to discuss the matter. The court then adjourned the case until April 22.After Srinivasan was replaced by Gavaskar and Yadav in accordance to Supreme Court instructions last month, some BCCI members had demanded a special general body meeting be convened to discuss the matter, but they weren’t heeded. This time the board has been compelled to convene a meeting before the next court hearing.

Unbeaten centuries from Alex Gidman and Will Tavare guided Gloucestershire to a draw with Essex in Bristol. The visitors took control of the Division Two clash on Tuesday after two days blighted by bad weather. Essex reached 305 for 8, with Ben Foakes unbeaten on 132, and their first act on the final morning was to declare. That left Gloucestershire, who made just 134 in their first innings, 171 adrift and facing a testing day in order to secure a draw. And it looked like defeat could well be on the cards when both openers went early but Gidman and Tavare guided them to 251 for 2 and a draw was agreed upon.Gloucestershire lost their first wicket in the third over when Chris Dent, who was last man out in the first innings, edged behind, giving David Masters his seventh wicket of the match.Captain Michael Klinger then fell for 7, bowled by Tymal Mills to leave the hosts wobbling at 18 for 2.But there was nothing Essex could do to part Tavare and Gidman, who batted together for more than 70 overs, putting on 233 runs. It was the second 200-plus partnership of the match, with Foakes and James Foster putting Essex in control with 218 on the third day.For 24-year-old Tavare, who was on exactly 100 when a draw was declared, it was a second century in three matches this season. Gidman scored at a faster rate to reach 119, his 21st first-class century.Essex collected 11 points from the match with Gloucestershire picking up seven. Both sides have drawn two of their three matches so far this season, with Essex beating Derbyshire in their opener and Gloucestershire losing to Hampshire.

David Morgan, a past ECB chairman, and driving force behind the adoption of Cardiff as an international venue and the restructuring of the English domestic game, has been nominated as the next president of MCC.The nomination of Morgan, made as tradition by the current incumbent Mike Gatting, was announced at the club’s annual meeting at Lord’s. His emollient skills may be necessary to help steer Lord’s through a delicate period in its history as passions rise over the growth of the ground.Morgan, whose long administrative career also included a spell as president of ICC, will take up the post in October. With ICC, ECB and MCC posts behind him, as well as the chairmanship of Glamorgan, he has worked his way through the alphabet.Tredegar born, it is the silent W in ECB which holds most of his affection: he has always insisted on the importance of the England and Wales Cricket Board.During his tenure, Gatting has presided over the progression of the Lord’s Masterplan, with MCC having gained planning permission for the redevelopment of the Warner Stand, with work scheduled to commence, subject to members’ approval, in September 2015.He has also overseen the introduction of MCC’s first community development programme, and has represented the club around the country and overseas, including official visits to Australia, Abu Dhabi and Oman.He will continue in his role as president throughout this summer’s celebrations of the bicentenary of Lord’s – including managing the home side for the MCC v Rest of the World match on 5th July – before he hands over the office to Morgan in October. After leaving Glamorgan in 1997, Morgan became Lord MacLaurin’s deputy at the ECB until 2002, when he was elected to take on the chairmanship himself. After five years with the ECB, Morgan was nominated for presidency of the ICC for a two-year term, being succeeded by Sharad Pawar in 2010. He was made an OBE in 2008.His most recent contribution to English cricket was the Morgan Review of 2011, which was considered to be the biggest shake-up of the county game in a decade. His commitment to hearing a wide selection of views was unstinting and the report’s recommendations, an exercise in conciliation and compromise, were largely but not entirely implemented prior to the start of the 2014 season.Gatting said: “Morgan has been and remains one of the most influential voices in the world game, and I’m sure he will do an excellent job in leading MCC through a very important time in its history. He is ambitious, creative and efficient and will be a fantastic leader for this wonderful Club.”There is work to do to continue moving the Lord’s Masterplan forward over the next year with the redevelopment of the south western corner of the Ground, including the Tavern and Allen Stands, next on the agenda. David has the perfect experience and temperament to make this and MCC’s other areas of work a great success.”
