– O trabalho é consistente e a avaliação é positiva.

Próximos jogos no Brasileirão

Will Gambhir have reason to smile?

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL game between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit17-Apr-2012Match factsWednesday, April 18, Mohali

Big pictureThree days after they failed to chase 132 after having been 73 for 2 at home against Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders run into the same team again, this time in Mohali. The Eden Gardens game was Knight Riders’ to lose; they went ahead and and somehow contrived to lose it, failing to get 13 off the final 12 deliveries. It was one of those Knight Riders defeats that just happened though they had no business getting defeated. There are numerous sides that fail to win from strong positions, but the underachievers tag has stuck particularly hard to Knight Riders, not least due to the many big players they have. The slow and turning Kolkata pitch has worked against them twice in three games now; even in the third match, they had to work hard to get past Rajasthan Royals. A change of venue and wicket would be welcome for the visitors. However, the Kings XI medium-pacers, led by Dimitri Mascarenhas, proved difficult to get away on the Mohali pitch against Pune Warriors.Players to watchGautam Gambhir was livid after the loss to Kings XI in Kolkata, saying that his batsmen needed to play “intelligent cricket.” Strong decisions would be taken unless players started performing, Gambhir said. Gambhir hasn’t exactly done that himself so far, apart from a 64 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. That innings set up Knight Riders’ first win of the season after consecutive losses. Gambhir needs to show his misfiring team-mates the way again. While Gambhir has at least one match-winning innings so far, his counterpart Adam Gilchrist has failed to get going. The retired Gilchrist plays only in the IPL, which makes it only more difficult for him at the start of the season. The sooner he finds some form, the better for his side.Stats and trivia Of the eight old IPL franchises, Knight Riders’ win-loss ratio of 0.78 is the second-worst, after Deccan Chargers’ 0.67 Mandeep Singh is the only Kings XI batsman to have made more than 100 runs so far this seasonQuotes”He is a hard worker. He is a terrific young man. I’m just trying to create the environment that he is comfortable to be a part of and that he knows the specific role that he has got..”

“He’s a match-winner. He can turn a match in a blink of an eye. We are showing confidence in him. He’s got the full support of everyone in the team. Everyone knows what a devastating player he can be. It’s only a matter of time before he wins us that game.”

Lions quicks shine as West Indies labour

Stuart Meaker and Jack Brooks each took three wickets as England Lions dismissed the West Indians for 147, despite Darren Bravo’s half-century

Given the start West Indies have had to their tour things could be said to be looking up. The full squad is finally available after Narsingh Deonarine arrived in the country and they managed the majority of a day’s play for the first time. However, in reality, that time on the field did not allay any of the concerns about their batting heading into the Test series as they stumbled to 147 all out – albeit in tricky conditions.Yet they are the sort of the conditions very likely to greet them at Lord’s next week and their audition against the Lions attack was from convincing. Only Darren Bravo, with a determined and increasingly fluent 51, offered significant resistance after the top order was blown away and the tail folded without much fight. From England’s point of view it was another display of the fine bowling resources on offer to them – Stuart Meaker was the best on show – but somehow the visitors need to find a way of putting 300 on the board. If they can do that their bowling attack is good enough to keep the contests even.Given all the recent poor weather, the fact that play was only delayed by an hour was unexpected but it was no surprise that James Taylor, the Lions captain, inserted the visitors and neither that they struggled to combat the moving ball, although in mitigation it was their first extended period in the middle. An inexperienced top order was always going to be up against it, as they will be during the Test series.Last week at Hove, where there were only 34 overs in three days, the West Indian top three did not flourish and it is a major weakness. On this occasion they were back in the pavilion with 16 on the board and when Shivnarine Chanderpaul departed cheaply even three figures appeared distant. But they cannot be relying on Chanderpaul all the time and Bravo gave the English audience their first glimpse of his ability with an increasingly positive display, especially considering the conditions. He battled at the start of his stay, reaching 6 off 44 deliveries before three boundaries in four balls kick-started his innings shortly before lunch. He continued to drive well after the break, reaching fifty from 86 balls, before top-edging a pull off Meaker, who bowled with impressive pace and troubled the batsmen throughout.Bravo had added 75 with Marlon Samuels, who was reacquainting himself with first-class cricket following a spell in the IPL, but two overs later Meaker added a further dent to the recovery when Samuels played slightly away from his body, although it was another good delivery. Meaker, who has taken 11 wickets in two Championship matches this season, soon added Shane Shillingford to his tally as the tall offspinner lost his off stump and gave Meaker three wickets in 15 balls. The earlier success had gone to the hometown boy. Jack Brooks, wearing his trademark head band (although in England red and white rather than Northamptonshire maroon), had to bowl into the wind and produced a strong opening spell. Adrian Barath, who had twice edged over and through the cordon, was the first to fall when he fended off the back foot to third slip. Brooks’ second came courtesy of a fine diving catch by Ian Bell at second slip to remove Kirk Edwards, who is captaining the tourists here after it was decided to rest Darren Sammy.Between Brooks’ successes Jade Dernbach also made his mark when he found the edge of Kieran Powell to give Jonny Bairstow a catch. Both Dernbach and Brooks were replaced after exacting six-over spells but the pressure was maintained by Meaker and Matt Coles. The former was particularly impressive, bowling with hostile pace and getting the ball to jag back at both Bravo and Chanderpaul. However, it was Coles who bagged the key wicket of Chanderpaul although not with one of the many good deliveries. Instead, Chanderpaul tried to bail out of a half-hearted pull stroke and lobbed a catch to mid-on. It was a notable first Lions scalp for Coles but rare for Chanderpaul to offer such a gift.Coles claimed his second when Denesh Ramdin drove to gully playing a loose drive without footwork when conditions demanded more circumspection and the equal share of the success continued with Brooks and Dernbach cleaning up the innings. The signs were not promising for a West Indian fightback when Fidel Edwards began the Lions reply in horrid fashion with three consecutive no-balls, the last of which took Michael Carberry’s inside edge into the stumps. Eventually, though, Edwards put his foot behind the line and trapped Joe Root lbw with one that scooted through low.Carberry opened his scoring with a pulled six off Ravi Rampaul but lived a charmed life, edging short of third slip off Edwards and being dropped in the gully on 9, off Kemar Roach. Nick Compton looked more assured as the West Indian bowlers struggled to locate a consistently full length. They have not got long to find their range.

Mathews gem seals series for Sri Lanka

Pakistan’s journey to defeat in the final game that decided the series was an emotional ride that had several moments of satisfaction and relief, but ultimately ended in frustration and regret

The Report by Siddhartha Talya18-Jun-2012

Smart stats

Sri Lanka’s two-wicket win is their narrowest margin of victory against Pakistan (in terms of wickets). It also equals their closest win in terms of the number of balls remaining (two balls).

The target of 248 is also the highest chased by Sri Lanka in ODIs against Pakistan at the Premadasa stadium. Overall, it is the third-highest target chased by any team at the venue.

The series win is Sri Lanka’s third in their last four series (bilateral series) against Pakistan. Their previous two series wins were 2-1 in Pakistan (2009) and 3-2 in Sri Lanka (2009).

Angelo Mathews’ 80 is the highest score in a chase by a Sri Lankan batsman against Pakistan at the Premadasa stadium and the third-highest for them against Pakistan at the venue.

Mathews’ strike rate of 105.26 is the highest for a Sri Lankan for a fifty-plus score against Pakistan at the venue.

Umar Akmal’s half-century is his 15th in ODIs and fifth against Sri Lanka. He averages 51.27 against Sri Lanka while his overall average is 38.48.

This is the fifth occasion that Mahela Jayawardene has been dismissed for a first-ball duck.

Mohammad Sami conceded 75 runs off 9.4 overs. This is fourth-highest on the list of most runs conceded by a Pakistan bowler against Sri Lanka and the highest by a Pakistan bowler in Sri Lanka.

Pakistan’s journey to defeat in the final game that decided the series was an emotional ride, which had several moments of satisfaction and relief, but ultimately ended in frustration and regret. The satisfaction was because of a significantly improved batting performance that cast aside memories of a dispiriting collapse in the previous ODI, they experienced relief after wriggling out of difficult situations they’d created, the brief-but costly-spells of wayward bowling were a source of frustration, but the emotion that will linger will be the regret of an insipid fielding display that undermined each forward step. Amid all this, Angelo Mathews was a figure of calm and assuredness, and not for the first time he rescued Sri Lanka from trouble and fashioned a thrilling victory with the tail. Not quite the “tail”, since Sri Lanka’s No. 9 – Jeevan Mendis – has nine first-class hundreds. Nuwan Kulasekara did his bit too, but Mathews’ presence was the key. With his team on 138 for 6 in the 35th over, Pakistan were the favourites. Mathews didn’t flinch. He was selective in the balls he picked to dispatch, displayed confidence in his lower-order team-mates, indulged in a lot of touch-play and placement to work the gaps, all the while reminding his opponents that his was the decisive wicket. Those reminders weren’t enough to prevent Pakistan from letting their guard down. Outfielders failed to prevent twos that should have been ones, and those inside the circle failed to run the batsmen out at least three times, missing their targets as the chase approached a thrilling end. With 12 needed off five balls, Mohammad Sami – replacing the “rested” Saeed Ajmal – bowled a juicy length ball that Mathews launched over long-on. Another poor throw and two runs later, with four needed off three, Mathews cracked a short ball over point to seal the win. There had been several mini-conferences between overs, parallel discussions between fielders, all summing up Pakistan’s struggle to close the lid despite climbing to positions of advantage. The run-outs of Thisara Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne deprived Mathews of two capable partners, but Pakistan were in for a surprise soon when Mathews ceded floor to Mendis, who kickstarted the counterattack.Just when the required-rate had gone past nine an over in the 44th, Mendis smashed Sohail Tanvir’s slower ball for six over long-on before driving and glancing Umar Gul for two boundaries. Tanvir eventually got rid of Mendis, but Kulasekara hung on, even collecting a fortuitous boundary past third man off Sami. The pair of Kulasekara and Mathews knocked off six singles in the penultimate over, leading up to Mathews’ final surge in the 50th that included another missed run-out.While poor ground-fielding produced the reprieves towards the end of the innings, it combined with poor catching in the first half. Misfields and a ball kicked for four in the outfield preceded a straightforward catch dropped off Kumar Sangakkara on 25 by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. The run that lapse conceded brought about a half-century stand between Sangakkara and Dinesh Chandimal. It had helped Sri Lanka recover from two early blows inflicted by Tanvir, who castled Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga. Even though Sarfraz reacted sharply to run out Sangakkara for 36, the Pakistani heads continued to sink in their hands as the fielding woes didn’t stop.Chandimal, too, was given a life on 35 when a mistimed pull off Gul in the 30th over was put down by Azhar Ali at deep square leg. Ali was several yards in and failed to hold on as he back-pedalled and was unable to keep his balance. Chandimal went on to score a further 19 runs, those extra runs proving a major contribution in the outcome.Pakistan replaced an experienced Younis Khan with Imran Farhat, who opened the batting and delivered to make a fluent fifty, with shots relying heavily on wristwork and backed up with flourish. He built a solid partnership with Ali, who then formed a steady association with Asad Shafiq. Each of the three batsmen, however, gave their wickets away – Farhat and Ali were caught off avoidable shots while a moment’s hesitation for a single accounted for Shafiq.Umar Akmal gave the innings impetus with his attacking, unbeaten 55. He thrice flicked Lasith Malinga past short fine, struck Perera for two sixes and promised to take Pakistan past 260. At 220 for 6 in the 44th over, that was well within reach. Akmal was picking Malinga’s slower ones, but that changed soon as the seamer got his yorkers on the mark. Akmal made room, moved across, swung hard, tried to scoop, but Malinga had the better of the contest at the death. His thrift ensured Akmal managed only nine runs off his last 19 balls, and Pakistan just 27 off the last six overs. It would hurt Pakistan in the end, but not as much as their fielding.

Narine, Roach and Pollard join BBL

Sunil Narine has signed for the Sydney Sixers, Kemar Roach will play for the Brisbane Heat and Kieron Pollard will turn out for the Adelaide Strikers in this summer’s Big Bash League

Sunil Narine has signed for the Sydney Sixers, Kemar Roach will play for the Brisbane Heat and Kieron Pollard will turn out for the Adelaide Strikers in this summer’s Big Bash League. The West Indian trio signed on the final day of the initial contracting period, as all eight teams were required to submit lists of at least 14 players by Friday afternoon. However, Cricket Australia granted an extension to the Sydney Thunder, who were unable to finalise two signings by the 5pm deadline and have been given more time to push their numbers up to 14. Teams have until the end of November to top up their squad to 18 players and the Perth Scorchers remain the only side to have named a full 18-man group already. In other deals on Friday the Sydney Sixers signed Brett Lee, Steven Smith, Dominic Thornely and Ian Moran; the Brisbane Heat signed Peter Forrest and Cameron Gannon; and Darren Pattinson joined the Melbourne Renegades. But the big movements surrounded the three West Indians, with Narine’s signature a major boost for the Sixers after he was the Player of the Tournament in the IPL this year.”Sunil is a huge win for us as well and will bring another level of excitement to the team that we know Sixers fans will enjoy,” Stuart Clark, the Sixers general manager, said.Pollard will return to Adelaide after playing for South Australia in the Big Bash in 2009-10 and 2010-11. He was to be part of the Strikers squad last summer but was ruled out due to injury, and this year he will join the captain Johan Botha as the two overseas players this season.”Coming back to Adelaide has always been on my mind,” Pollard said. “It’s always been a great set-up for me as a cricketer. Last year was obviously frustrating for me so I definitely feel I have some business to take care of. I still know a lot of the guys which is pleasing, and there are some quality players in the line-up.”I see Taity [Shaun Tait] is back and that’s good news for us. I enjoy what he brings to a side, so I am definitely looking forward to catching up with him again. Having Johan Botha there to captain the side is going to bring some fresh ideas for sure as he is an experienced leader as well as a quality cricketer, and senior players like Maxy Klinger and Andrew McDonald give a lot of strength to the line-up.”Roach will be part of the BBL for the first time and the Brisbane Heat coach Darren Lehmann said he was expected to be available for five or six matches.”We are super excited to come to terms with Kemar Roach for BBL02,” Lehmann said. “He’s a great young bloke and while he is still learning the T20 side of things, he’s done well at Test and ODI level and has those raw ingredients of pace and aggression that you want in a fast bowler.”I think he will be a great addition to the Heat playing list and will give certainly the fans in Brisbane something to talk about when he comes along for the series. All going to plan he will play around five or six games which we expect him to make an impact in.”Roach is one of ten overseas players to have been signed already, with the Melbourne Renegades, the Melbourne Stars, the Hobart Hurricanes, the Sydney Sixers and the Sydney Thunder all able to sign another one or two internationals.Despite having played a Test for England, Pattinson does not count as an overseas player for the Renegades because he lives in Australia and has not played for England in more than four years. He said he was looking forward to a cross-town rivalry with his younger brother James, who is part of the Stars squad.”We’ve played together a few times but that’d be the first time playing against him,” Pattinson said. “There have been plenty of battles in the back yard but playing him at Etihad Stadium would be great. I fancy bowling against him but not facing him.”The squads so far
