Seamers seal win for Wellington

A round-up of the eighth round of matches from the 2010-11 Plunket Shield

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2011With bad weather affecting cricket across the country, more than a day’s play was lost in Auckland’s match against Wellington at Colin Maiden Park. That didn’t stop the match ending with a result, however and with bowlers running rampant in the damp weather Wellington sealed a 125-run win on the fourth day as Auckland were bowled out for 144 in pursuit of 270.Weather breaks meant there was a very slow start to the game, Wellington’s first-innings total of 258 taking more than two days to compile, with half-centuries from opener Stephen Murdoch and captain Grant Elliott propping up the innings and Chris Martin taking 5 for 47 – his 22nd five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. On a remarkable third day, which saw 17 wickets fall for 290 runs, Auckland stumbled to 8 for 151 declared and then shot Wellington out for just 162, Martin helping himself to another four wickets and left-arm spinner Bruce Martin taking 5 for 57.Auckland were set an unlikely 270 to win the game on the fourth day, but mere survival proved too challenging as seamers Mark Gillespie, Andy McKay and Ili Tugaga ripped through the top order to reduce the opposition to 7 for 81. Bradley Cachopa’s 33 briefly held them back, while Michael Bates reached an unbeaten 32 to no avail as Gillespie returned to wrap up the tail and the win for Wellington. The contest between Central Districts and Northern Districts was marred by rain, with the second, third and fourth days washed out at McLean park in Napier. There was some play on the first, just 8.2 overs where Northern Districts managed 21 for the loss of a wicket. The teams didn’t take any points from the game. Central Districts retained their place at the top of the table with 28 points, while Northern Districts were second with 26.Persistent bad weather through four days meant that only 151 overs of play were possible in the game between Canterbury and Otago at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora as the match ended in a draw.In a rain-affected first day where play began at 4.30pm local time, Canterbury seized the early impetus when they reduced Otago to 44 for 4. Otago ended the first day on 69 for 4 and their first innings spanned the better part of the next four days as no play was possible on the second day and only 39-odd overs on the third day.Canterbury looked to force a first-innings result on the fourth day as an all-round show from their bowlers helped them bowl Otago out for 199 with captain Craig Cumming the only batsmen to offer some resistance with a defiant unbeaten century. Propped by an unbeaten half-century from Dean Brownlie and handy forties from Rob Nicol and Peter Fulton, Canterbury posted 200 for 5 in their first innings before play ended to help them secure two points.

Murali criticises SLC decision to recall players

IPL Chairman Chirayu Amin has said that the controversy surrounding Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) decision to recall the Sri Lankan players participating in the IPL by May 5 to prepare for the tour of England will be resolved shortly

Muttiah Muralitharan has slammed SLC’s decision to recall the Sri Lankan players early from the IPL•Associated Press

IPL Chairman Chirayu Amin has said that the controversy surrounding Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) decision to recall the Sri Lankan players participating in the IPL by May 5 to prepare for the tour of England will be resolved shortly.”The BCCI top brass is in touch with SLC and they will resolve the issue,” Amin told the . “It is an issue between SLC and its players who are playing in IPL four. We are expecting that the issue will get solved by next week.”Sri Lanka’s cricketers are due to depart for England on May 10 where they will play three Tests, five ODIs and one Twenty20. Duleep Mendis, chairman of selectors, had said that it was important for the players “to report for training and to concentrate on getting used to the change of playing white balls to red.”Meanwhile, former Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who is playing for Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL, has slammed the board’s decision.”I think the board [SLC] has given them permission till May 20,” Murali told a TV channel. “I don’t know what happened suddenly. The players were told to come on May 5. It is the fault of SLC because they signed the NOC [No Objection certificate] till May 20 so if they change it to May 5 it is wrong.”Players will get demoralised, because if they go back on May 5, they play half of the IPL and they are going to miss a lot [of it]. SLC should have informed the players earlier, then the IPL franchises would understand and everyone would understand,” he said. There are currently 11 Sri Lankan cricketers, including Murali, involved in the IPL.Murali said that incident could spark some “friction” between the boards of the two countries. “We have 25 million dollars of debt after the World Cup. You don’t have to antagonise India because only when India comes [to Sri Lanka] we make money and survive, so I don’t know what’s going to happen.”Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara who is captaining Deccan Chargers in the IPL, said the players would follow the board’s directive. “It is up to the BCCI and the SLC to negotiate on this. What we as players can do is to abide by the decision of our board.”

Australia maintain DRS resolve

Australia will push for the right to enforce umpire decision reviews in its home matches, despite continued Indian opposition.

Australia will push for the right to enforce umpire decision reviews in its home matches at the ICC’s executive board meeting in June, despite continued Indian opposition to the system.India’s scheduled visit to Australia during the 2011-12 summer, their first tour down under since the contentious 2008 Sydney Test match that led indirectly to the adoption of the DRS, adds plenty of currency to an issue that remains divisive even after the system’s use during the World Cup.The ICC cricket committee recommended in its meeting at Lord’s that home boards be granted the right to choose whether to employ the system or not, a state of affairs that would prevent the repeat of a situation when India and hosts Sri Lanka disagreed over its use last year.James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, showed no public sign of deferring to India’s judgment following his board’s two-day meeting in Melbourne. “My personal view is strongly in support of DRS, as we know the current understanding is basically the DRS can be used by bilateral agreement of the two competing teams,” said Sutherland.”At this stage in spite of the recommendation of the cricket committee it does need to go through other bodies within the ICC in order for that to become an absolute requirement. I’m conscious of that, but certainly from a CA perspective we would be very keen for DRS to be in place for all international cricket.”An ICC plan to have BCCI officials observe the use of the DRS in Australia, during the Ashes last summer, fell through due to scheduling conflicts, but the World Cup provided a closer look for subcontinental administrators and players. There was consternation about the lbw reprieve won on a technicality by Ian Bell during India’s group match against England, but it must also be observed that Sachin Tendulkar was saved from an early dismissal in the semi-final against Pakistan by a similarly narrow DRS margin.”Obviously we all got a fair insight into that during the World Cup where the DRS system was in place for the World Cup, and that was in India,” said Sutherland.Tendulkar and the Indian captain MS Dhoni are thought to be the bulwark of Indian opposition to the system, a position that has been unchanged since Sri Lanka had much the better of the DRS during a series in Sri Lanka in late 2008.

– Falei duas vezes do meu gol, e oito vezes do Carille (risos). Tranquilo.

PCB restores Afridi's NOC

Shahid Afridi has been fined rupees 4.5 million by the PCB but has been given his no-objection certificates, clearing his participation in domestic Twenty20 tournaments around the world

Shahid Afridi has been fined rupees 4.5 million ($52,300) by the PCB for violating the board’s code of conduct but has been given his no-objection certificate, clearing his participation in domestic Twenty20 tournaments around the world.Afridi pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the verdict of the disciplinary committee but he did not apologise during the hearing in Lahore. “I did not apologise for what I said,” Afridi told ESPNcricinfo. “I did regret the situation and accepted my violations but I have not apologised.”Afridi also said that he will remain retired. “I am still not willing to play international cricket under this administration. That stance remains as before.””The committee unanimously decided to fine him 4.5 million rupees ($53,000) for various breaches of the code of conduct,” PCB’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi said. “The committee also recommended his NOCs to play abroad be restored, which the Pakistan Cricket Board has endorsed.”Afridi will now return to England, debuting for Hampshire against Essex on Thursday, in the Friends Life t20.This latest development brings to an end, for now at least, a feud that began during Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies. During the one-day series in the Caribbean, Afridi had a falling out with the coach Waqar Younis and he made his feelings public on his return to Pakistan. The PCB responded by stripping Afridi of the ODI captaincy after which the allrounder pulled out of the trip to Ireland and retired, refusing to play under the present administration. The PCB then issued Afridi a showcause notice, suspended his central contract and revoked all NOCs issued to him, blocking his stint with Hampshire. Afridi replied to the notice, accepting that he had violated the code and said he was willing to appear before a disciplinary committee. He then filed a petition with the Sindh High Court against the PCB, asking for the sanctions against him to be revoked. At one stage it was unclear if Afridi would even appear before the disciplinary committee and the whole issue became political. Eventually Afridi and the board came to a compromise and an agreement was reached to reinstate his NOCs if he withdrew the petition against the PCB from the court.
