South Africa hold edge despite Razzaq miracle

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI of Pakistan’s series against South Africa in Dubai

The Preview by George Binoy04-Nov-2010Match FactsNovember 2, Dubai
Start time 15:00 (11:00 GMT)Colin Ingram and Hashim Amla’s efforts were put firmly in the shade by Abdul Razzaq’s blistering knock in the second match•AFP

The Big PicturePakistan’s victories are rarely unspectacular. They rarely win without a blitz from the blue or a jaw-dropping demonstration of fast bowling. They almost always leave it late, and to a few men, sending their fans from despair to delight. But because Pakistan rely so much on moments of individual genius to overcome collective, sustained efficiency, they don’t win as much as less exciting sides do.Like well-oiled South Africa, who won ten consecutive one-day internationals before being blind-sided by Abdul Razzaq. Pakistan are certainly the more memorable side, in victory or defeat, but South Africa unquestionably the more successful. Even if South Africa go on to take the series 4-1, the stand-out match and performance could still be Razzaq’s heist. It’s a back-handed compliment of sorts but Pakistan would probably be willing to swap some of their breathtaking tendencies for mundane, run-of-the-mill victories. But that isn’t this Pakistan’s way.So as the series moves to Dubai, South Africa will enter Tuesday’s game as favourites once again, simply because it’s likelier that Hashim Amla will provide a solid start, which his team-mates in the middle order will convert into a substantial performance. And it’s likelier that Pakistan’s batsmen will combust, whether from their indiscretions or South Africa’s superiority. Should that come to pass, ODI No. 3064 is likely to fade from memory quickly. But if it doesn’t, and Razzaq or another temperamental Pakistan player produces a mercurial performance, the battle between these two very different teams will be worth the watch.Form guide(most recent first)
South Africa: LWWWW
Pakistan: WLLWWWatch out for…Misbah-ul-Haq made only 31 runs in the first two ODIs after replacing Umar Akmal, who perhaps paid the price for one flamboyant shot too many. Misbah is likely to keep his place in the remaining games, considering he will be Test captain after the one-dayers are over, but would like to secure it with worthy performances. His steady approach could form the pillar around which the shot-makers can rally, but he is yet to find form.Few people will remember Colin Ingram’s century, a innings that was the bulwark of South Africa’s 286 in the second ODI, because Razzaq blitzed it into an obscure page in the record books. Ingram does, however, average 85 with a strike-rate of 94 after five ODIs, and is a prospect for the future.Team newsGraeme Smith and Jacques Kallis missed the second ODI and it’s not yet certain that they will return for the third. Smith got hit on his hand but x-rays revealed no fracture, while Kallis was racked with cramps and had to retire in the first game. He needed an intravenous drip after suffering from dehydration, which was triggered by a viral infection.South Africa (possible): 1 Robin Peterson, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Albie Morkel 8 Johan Botha (capt), 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 11 Charl LangeveldtNever change a winning combination, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it … the cliches exhorting the virtues of persisting with a winning side are numerous. But Pakistan, with their reliance on individuals, aren’t a winning combination and so there’s a case for Umar Akmal to be given a look-in once again.Pakistan (possible): 1 Asad Shafiq, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq / Umar Akmal, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Shahid Afridi (capt), 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Zulqarnain Haider (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Shoaib Akhtar, 11 Saeed AjmalStats and trivia Only two ODIs have been played at the Dubai International Stadium – between Pakistan and Australia – and both were low-scoring contests. Australia’s 208 for 4 is the venue’s highest total
Beware Shahid Afridi the legspinner at this venue. In those two games against Australia, Afridi claimed 6 for 38 and 2 for 38 in ten-over spells.Quotes”We are feeling better now as a team. We have areas to improve on, but we will try our best in the coming games.”

“I can’t really say much, but you play an innings like that, then you deserve to win the game. It’s never nice to lose, but rather here than in a World Cup.”

Leeds: Barcelona agree terms with Raphinha

Leeds United have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to keep Raphinha at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that Barcelona have already agreed terms with the 25-year-old ahead of a summer move, with the outlet suggesting that the Brazilian’s switch to the Camp Nou is now very close.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

However, the report does go on to state that the Catalan side are yet to come to an agreement with Victor Orta and Leeds regarding the sale of the winger, with it being said that Barca face a far more difficult challenge in agreeing terms with the Premier League outfit.

Supporters will be gutted

While it is undeniable that Leeds receiving a £63m fee for a player they signed for £17m a little under two years ago would represent fantastic business by Orta, considering his importance within the Whites first-team, the news that a deal is close for Raphinha’s transfer this summer is nevertheless sure to leave the Elland Road faithful gutted.

Indeed, over his 30 Premier League appearances last season, the £40.5m-rated forward was in breathtaking form, scoring six goals, providing nine assists and creating 12 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots, making 2.1 key passes and completing 1.9 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the 25-year-old earn an extremely impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as his club’s third-best performer in the top flight.

This is form the Brazil international has continued over his 30 Premier League outings this term, with the £63k-per-week sensation bagging ten goals, registering three assists and creating nine big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.6 shots, making two key passes and completing two dribbles per fixture.

These metrics have seen the attacker average a fantastic SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s second-best outfielder in the league.

As such, it is clear to see just how important a player Raphinha is for Leeds, and the prospect of the Brighton & Hove Albion fixture being the winger’s last outing at Elland Road is sure to be something Leeds supporters will be having nightmares about.

Former India batsman TE Srinivasan dies of brain cancer

Former Tamil Nadu batsman Tirumalai Srinivasan died on Monday morning after a long struggle against brain cancer

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2010Former Tamil Nadu batsman Tirumalai Srinivasan died on Monday morning after a long struggle against brain cancer. The 60-year-old had had two surgeries and was due to have a third when he passed away.Srinivasan was first noticed when he hit 112 for South Zone against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy in the 1977-78 season. A string of consistent performances, culminating in an innings of 129 in the 1980-81 Deodhar Trophy final and an unbeaten ton against Delhi in the Irani Trophy, earned him a place in the India squad for that season’s tour of Australia and New Zealand. A famous anecdote from that tour captured Srinivasan’s witty outlook to life. When he landed in Australia, Srinivasan allegedly told a local press reporter, “‘Tell Dennis Lillee TE has arrived”. He could, however, not make an impact on the field, scoring 48 runs in his solitary Test in Auckland, and failing in two one-dayers.In an era that included the likes of Kris Srikkanth, Srinivasan was considered by many to be the best batsman of his times to play for Tamil Nadu. Though his international career did not take off, he was quite successful when he turned out in the Yorkshire League for the local outfit Wodehouse. Former England captain Michael Atherton, in his autobiography , documented his appreciation of Srinivasan’s strokeplay in the league. “A swashbuckling batsman from Madras, Srinivasan was everything that [Sri Lanka’s Sidath] Wettimuny was not – wild, aggressive, and totally unorthodox,” Atherton wrote. “He was a stalwart for Tamil Nadu, in India, for many years.”S Venkataraghavan, the former India and Tamil Nadu offspinner, recalled Srinivasan as being a wonderful friend. “He enjoyed his cricket as much as he enjoyed life,” he said. “In my opinion, he was one of the best I have seen. His death is a great personal loss to me.”The latter part of Srinivasan’s life was dominated by his protracted battle against cancer. He underwent his first surgery immediately after being diagnosed with a malignant tumour at the age of 54, following which he managed to lead a near-normal life. However, a risky second surgery to remove the residual tumour and scar tissue, that had formed due to his treatment, left him almost paralysed and speechless. He responded remarkably to an advanced second line of therapy recommended by doctors from New York University. Having put up a brave front against the disease, Srinivasan was keen to help cancer patients and dreamt of setting up a hospital or a foundation to that end. Unfortunately, he could not live long enough to see the cause through to its completion.

West Brom duo must go this summer

West Bromwich Albion are set to make major changes this summer following a disappointing season for the Baggies, and now a new update has emerged on the players that are likely to be axed from the squad this summer.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s West Brom reporter Steve Madeley, Steve Bruce could be set to get rid of Cedric Kipre and Kean Bryan this summer.

The report reveals that the Baggies boss is set for a huge summer transfer window with the intention to rebuild the squad to put them in a better position next season, and the defensive duo are likely to be two of the players set for the chop at the end of the season.

Bruce must make ruthless decision

West Brom currently have a large and unnecessary number of defenders in their squad, six to be exact, so if Bruce is looking to find ways to boost funds this summer and improve the squad’s weaknesses in other areas, he must make a ruthless decision on his outgoings.

With that being said, both Kipre and Bryan would seem the most likely to be sent packing in the next few weeks as the pair’s departure would have the least impact on the back four, following a disappointing season for both.

Kipre who was dubbed “shocking” by Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack, has not played in the side since January and is clearly not a player the Baggies manager intends to deploy considering he has not featured at all since he arrived at the beginning of February, so it would make sense that his role is coming under question ahead of next season.

However, Bryan whose time at the club has been labelled “strange” by Madeley, has been out through no fault of his own with a devastating injury after sustaining damage to his anterior cruciate ligament shortly after he joined the club on a free transfer that has seen him sidelined for the whole season.

Although the injured centre-back has the quality to play in the team with former manager Chris Wilder calling him “talented”, he will face tough competition to return to the starting line-up and will likely get the opportunity to return to match fitness by going out on loan this summer should he be able to recover from his injury in time. As a result, it’s safe to say the duo could hold the club back financially this summer if they aren’t told to leave.

Ultimately, the former Newcastle manager will have his work cut out for him over the next few months trying to identify the right incoming and outgoings that will positively impact and offer availability in the team to put them in a much better position to earn promotion back into the Premier League next season.

Smith piles the pressure on India

Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, believes that India are the team with a point to prove going into the three-Test series starting in Centurion on Thursday

Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, believes that India are the team with a point to prove going into the three-Test series starting in Centurion on Thursday. “If you’re going to be No. 1 in the world you have to be convincing all around the world and beat people in their own backyards. That’s what Australia did consistently. The pressure will be on India,” Smith said at a press conference in Centurion on Wednesday.Although Corrie van Zyl, South Africa’s coach, and some of the other players have talked down the importance of the rankings, Smith echoed the thoughts of many who believe that India have to win in South Africa to justify their label as the world’s top-ranked Test team.Smith believes South Africa are in an ideal space to challenge India. “We’ve been touching the No. 1 and 2 spot for the past two-and-a-half-years and we’ve played some good cricket around the world. We pride ourselves on big series like this one.” Unless they sweep the series, South Africa can’t overtake India at the top of the rankings, but they’re more interested in asserting their dominance than the label itself. The pitches are expected to play a vital role in the series, with South Africa requesting bouncy surfaces. Smith expects that the Centurion strip will have, “even more seam movement than expected because of the overcast conditions.” Even though the elements will support a pace attack, Smith all but dismissed thoughts of using five quicks, which they have at their disposal in the 12-man squad. “Judging how we’ve approached Tests at home in the past I would say we would go in with a spinner. “That means Paul Harris will definitely be in the starting XI after Johan Botha was released to his franchise. The additional seamer will be one of Lonwabo Tsotsobe or Ryan McLaren, with the former more likely to be included because of the variation he will add as a left-armer.Morne Morkel on Tuesday identified Virender Sehwag as the main threat to the South African attack, but Smith said his men will not be intimidated by the destructive Indian opener. “It’s important to note that he has been very successful against us on the subcontinent. We have discussed him, but no more than other batters and we’ve got plans for him.” The other batsman Smith has a particular eye on is Sachin Tendulkar. “I would love for Sachin to get his 50th Test ton but maybe in the next series.”The pre-series hype is still centred on the South African bowlers versus the Indian batsmen. Smith was asked if he thinks his bowlers have the ability to take 20 wickets in a match, after they failed to do so twice against Pakistan and twice in last season’s home series against England.”There’s no doubt in my mind that we can. When we playing England we had them nine down in two of the matches and had a little bit of luck gone our way we would have won the series. I’m sure India are asking themselves the same question after two drawn Test matches [against New Zealand]. I believe we have enough firepower and it’s just going to be about how we execute it.”Smith said his side are an older, wiser group from the one that drew with England last summer. “We are far more experienced and a lot calmer in terms of what we want to achieve. Emotion doesn’t really play a part in how we make our decisions,” he said. One of the things they want to achieve is to set the early pace in the series, especially after they had to recover from 1-0 down against India during the 2006-7 tour. “We really want to put our peg in the ground over the next five days. It’s important to get ahead.”
