Six months ago Michael Hussey highlighted three events in his diary that he was desperate to play in. He has ticked off the World Twenty20, which Australia lost in the final to England, and is in the process of readjusting for the Ashes in November and next year’s World Cup.After Hussey’s list was made a Test series against India was added to the schedule, increasing the workload and meaning players appearing in all the game’s forms will be attempting to peak over an eight-month period. Hussey is part of all three units but some of his team-mates rate his fitness so highly they think he could play on for years. An India tour before an Ashes campaign isn’t ideal due to the contrasting conditions, but Hussey has found some common themes between the contests. “As batsmen we’ll be tested against spin – and Harbhajan Singh,” he said. “It’s good preparation for facing Graeme Swann. Also, the Indians use reverse-swing very well, that’s something England are really trying to perfect. In that sort of respect it will be excellent preparation.”Swann and Stuart Broad are Hussey’s two main bowling threats for the series starting at the Gabba in November. Swann created problems for the Australian batsmen during the 2009 success, collecting 14 wickets, and Hussey is wary of what he could do in the five Tests. “We’re going to have to play him better than we did in England last time,” he said. “Someone like Stuart Broad could also be a handful with his height and bounce.”A once-in-a-lifetime explosion

Michael Hussey dreams of repeating his miraculous 60 off 24 balls at the World Twenty20 in May but deep down knows it was a one-off. Hussey slashed Australia to an unthinkable victory over Pakistan, blasting six sixes to surge Australia into the final.
“I hope it’s not a once-in-a-lifetime innings but to be honest it probably does feel like it is,” he said. “I’m still pinching myself about it now. It was all a bit of a blur, I had to get the tape of it and watch it again some time later. I hope it could happen again, but I doubt it very much.”
The fireworks got Hussey nominated for the Twenty20 performance of the year for the ICC awards in October. He has also been short-listed for the people’s choice category.

Hussey has “a very good feeling about the Ashes” and downplayed the talk of a 5-0 victory. Australia swept the last series when Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden were still playing and have undergone a significant rebuild.”A lot of legends left the team a few years ago, but we’ve been able to keep a core group of players together for a good couple of years now and we’ve been slowly building,” he said. “We’ve built up a good base of fast-bowling stock. It holds us in very good stead. We’ve got the pain of losing last time as well.”Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz and Peter Siddle are in line to return before the Ashes, but there is also the prospect of more injury setbacks right through to the World Cup. The schedule demands remind Hussey of four years ago, when a Champions Trophy, home Ashes series and World Cup were squeezed into the same campaign.”We’ve done well before,” he said. “We upped our training at certain stages at the end of the Australian summer [in 2006-07] and we lost five one-dayers in a row when John Buchanan increased our workload. I’m not sure if we’ll go down a similar path this time, but it held us in very good stead for the World Cup in the West Indies.”The title defence, with Australia currently undefeated in their past 29 World Cup matches, begins in February in India. Hussey, who was 35 in May, thinks he will start to consider his future again at the end of the tournament. He insists a fifth World Cup victory in a row for Australia is not the perfect time to stand down. “It took me 10 years to get one game, I don’t want to wish it away too quickly,” he said. “I’ll see how I’m feeling, if my body’s good and I’m still contributing to the team then I’m hoping to continue on.”

India's injury concerns ease

Three of India’s key players who were reported to have had injury scares over the last three days were the first ones out for their training session at the Sector 16 Stadium in Chandigarh. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were the first set of batsmen to take the centre pitch and the adjoining net available for batting, and Harbhajan Singh was the first bowler to bowl. Moreover, they trained without much obvious discomfort during the session that went on for close to five hours. Some of India’s players have been in Chandigarh over the last three days, but the rest, with the exception of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay, who won the Champions League T20 in Johannesburg on Sunday, joined in on Tuesday. That Gambhir, Harbhajan and Sehwag practised without unease was good news for India, who had appeared to run into fitness problems in the lead-up to this series – a reminder of the fitness disaster during the Sri Lanka tour. Reports that Harbhajan had an MRI scan done on Monday, and that he was doubtful for the Test, were a serious concern for India. However, he had had longish bowling session in the nets on Monday, and bowled, batted and fielded for extended periods on Tuesday as well.Gambhir was hit on the right hand by a rising Ben Hilfenhaus delivery in the tour game, which ended his participation for the remainder of the match. The decision to not take the field or bat later in the game, however, seems like just a precaution. Sehwag was reported to have been hit on the knee by Ishant Sharma in one of the nets sessions, but he, too, looked hardly in trouble. There has been no official word from the BCCI yet.Australia, meanwhile, gave its players a break after a fruitful three-day game in the Chandigarh heat. The first Test begins on Friday.

Romano makes claim on MUFC transfer plans

Manchester United are predicted to make huge changes this summer, including the appointment of a new manager and now Fabrizio Romano has made a huge claim on the transfer plans at Old Trafford.

What’s the word?

According to popular transfer insider and journalist Romano, Manchester United are already making plans to sign their next striker, with Richarlison and Darwin Nunez named as two players the club are interested in.

The Italian took to his YouTube channel to make the claim:

“Erik ten Hag knows how important it is to decide who is the perfect striker for Manchester United as soon as possible.

“For example, Darwin Nunez, and Richarlison are already players they have discussed internally.

“The perfect striker will be discussed with ten Hag before jumping into negotiations. Man United will 100% sign a new striker regardless of what happens with Ronaldo.”

Supporters will be excited

Following the shocking 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday evening, supporters will surely be excited that the wheels are in motion to start making changes and improving the squad with Richarlison and Nunez named as potential candidates.

Richarlison is currently embroiled in a relegation battle at Everton, however, at just 24 years old could be a great signing for Man United to improve the quality in the front three.

The Brazilian striker usually plays on the left wing to accommodate his partnership with Dominic Calvert-Lewin who plays in the centre-forward role at Goodison Park but has proven he can also be effective in his team-mate’s role too following his absence this season through injury.

The Toffees attacker has scored 49 goals in 145 appearances for his current club, but with the right service and guidance could have the potential to become a much more consistent goal threat and would be a good prospect for replacing Marcus Rashford if he was to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, as per reports.

Nunez is a hugely hot prospect for many Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also speculated to be interested in securing his signature this summer following a fantastic season so far from the Benfica striker.

The 22-year-old has scored an impressive 33 goals in 38 appearances for his Portuguese club and has caught the eye of several clubs following his Champions League performances scoring six goals in the competition against Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Ajax.

With that being said, if ten Hag does join the club he will have a challenge on his hands to identify the right players to make an instant impact on the struggling Man United side to ensure next season they have the opportunity to compete for trophies, and signing a new strike force is clearly a promising priority.

Jamal seven-for gives Abbottabad control

A round-up of the second day of the second round of matches in Division 2 of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Oct-2010Abbottabad held the advantage against Lahore Shalimar at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium after a career-best 7 for 70 by fast bowler Ahmed Jamal gave his team a 62-run lead. The Abbottabad batsmen then finished at 90 for 4 at stumps to extend the lead with enough resources still available to build it towards something substantial. Lahore had started the day on the back foot, at 9 for 2, and things quickly worsened with Jamal tearing through the line-up to reduce them to 42 for 7. But there was a resistance; Saad Nasim and Aamer Hayat struck half-centuries under pressure and put together a 122-run stand to rescue their team, which was eventually bowled out for 184. In the second innings, it was Fawad Khan, unbeaten on 43, who guided the innings amid the loss of four wickets and pushed the lead to 156 with six wickets still in hand.Khan Research Laboratories took control of their contest against Hyderabad, who are playing at the Niaz Stadium, their home ground. KRL began the day on 261 for 7 and folded for 291, with left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti finishing with a career-best 6 for 73. But his batsmen failed to put up a competitive response, as none managed to score a half-century while seamers Yasir Arafat and Mohammad Irfan, both of whom have played for Pakistan, shared five wickets between them. Lal Kumar top-scored with 46 but was short of support from the rest and Hyderabad were bowled out for 167, conceding a lead of 124. In their second innings, KRL have begun well, with the openers adding 43 and still unbeaten.Karachi Whites dominated Quetta for the second successive day at the National Stadium in Karachi. Their batsmen, led by wicketkeeper Mohammad Hasan who reached his maiden first-class century, piled up 520 for 6. Karachi lost the other centurion, Wajihuddin, who had reached three-figures on the first day, and overnight batsman Asim Kamal in quick succession. But Hasan, with Mohammad Waqas, who hit a half-century, added 132 runs for the sixth wicket to ensure their team, barring a miracle, would not lose the game.Lahore Ravi surged ahead of Pakistan Television on the second day at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Solid top-order contributions and an unbeaten 87 by Asif Raza at No.7, who led his team’s recovery from 172 for 5, took Lahore to 329 for 7 at stumps, a lead of 174. The start to the day was encouraging for Lahore with opener Mohammad Saad and Fahad-ul-Haq adding 139 for the second wicket, promising to take their team towards a strong lead. But the seam duo of Saad Altaf and Zahoor Khan bagged the next four wickets for just 32. The scare, though, was cast aside by Raza and captain Sheraz Butt, who struck one of 50-plus scores in the innings, to add 97 for the sixth wicket in a potentially decisive stand.State Bank of Pakistan and Peshawar finished things even at the end of the second day at the Sports Complex in Mardan. Starting the day on 283 for 4, SBP would have been disappointed at being bowled out for 376. Adnan Raees, on 94 at the end of the opening day, reached his century, his ninth in first-class cricket, but was eventually dismissed for 122. But there was not much support for the innings from the lower order, as the last five wickets fell for 28. Medium-pacer Riaz Afridi, who has played one Test for Pakistan, bagged his 14th haul of five or four wickets. Peshawar, in their reply, lost two early wickets but were steadied by Naved Khan, who, unbeaten on 63, steered his team for 141 for 4 at stumps. He was supported by Ashfaq Ahmed in an unfinished 34-run stand.

West Ham: Who is Levi Laing?

West Ham faces a centre back crisis ahead of their next Premier League match against Arsenal, with Craig Dawson suspended and Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna injured.

This could leave a door ajar for a young prospect in the Hammers academy to make the step up and give David Moyes a selection headache.

The onus could fall on Aji Alese but another such player is Levi Laing, the 19-year-old centre back who has featured for the West Ham U23 squad ten times in the Premier League 2 as well as making an appearance in the EFL Trophy in September.

The defender signed his first professional contract back in July 2021 and this runs until 2023, with the option of an extra year. His U23 coach Dmitri Halajko stated: “The progress that he’s made in such a short period of time has been really positive”. The future looks bright for the youngster.

This wasn’t the only praise exuded by admirers, with Mark Robson explaining that Laing was “outstanding” following a performance against Exeter in a 3-0 win for the U23s.

West Ham have been fantastic this season, but with so many games played in Europe and domestically, there is injuries at the heart of the defence, and with Dawson suspended for the next Premier League match, Moyes should have no clams about putting Laing in the mix.

Ogbonna is fast approaching 34 and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, plus his injury woes, there is absolutely no reason why the young Englishman can’t be the long-term heir to the towering centreback in the near future.

Both players are over 6 foot 1 and have a commanding presence in the air. With Ogbonna and Laing sharing traits such as height and the way they play, then it could be an effortless change.

Moyes could end up saving the club millions in the transfer market too, despite European success bringing in added revenue, the future could look bright for the Hammers.
