Plays of the Day for the 11th match, between Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla

It was an auspicious debut for the Mongoose•Mongoose

Sehwag scintillates
In his previous game, Muttiah Muralitharan bowled a top spell against Kolkata Knight Riders, allowing just 16 runs in his four overs while picking up the wicket of Laxmi Shukla. Today his first over went for 12, with Virender Sehwag taking a special liking for his pace and turn: a well executed late cut for four was followed by an even better shot as he gave himself room, in fact exposing all three stumps, and gently and elegantly angled the ball wide of short third man for another boundary. Nothing fazes this man.Sticking to the basics … and suffering
When bowling at the death, the gospel says “full and straight”. Poor Joginder Sharma was precisely that in the 19th over, except that Rajat Bhatia struck successive sixes off him, indicating that there really is no set method in Twenty20. The fourth ball off the over was a full toss, which Bhatia dumped over deep midwicket, and the next was pitched up on the stumps and Bhatia nonchalantly swung it over long-on for the same result. Both Joginder and Bhatia were drafted in for their first game of the season, and their contributions couldn’t have been starker: Joginder went for 43 in his four overs and Bhatia larruped a nine-ball 21 that swung the impetus back Delhi’s way after Chennai had hit back with big wickets in a clump.Suspense and suspenders
Who says the first over of a Twenty20 innings can’t be full of suspense and action even if there isn’t a single wicket or boundary? Sample the first over of Chennai’s chase, bowled by Dirk Nannes. First delivery: left alone. Second delivery: pitched and cut back sharply to nearly saw Parthiv Patel in half, Dinesh Karthik fumbled the take as he fell to his right. Third delivery: well outside off stump, Parthiv , a wide was called. Fourth delivery: length ball, tapped in front of square for a quick single. Fifth delivery: pitched on a good length, held its line, and Matthew Hayden didn’t offer a shot. You could feel the suspense building up. Sixth delivery: just as Nannes released the ball, Hayden backed out with some issues with vision down the ground. When the ball was finally bowled, he calmly opted to shoulder arms. Was the big hit around the corner, you wondered? Seventh delivery: Hayden mistimed a drive to a full ball, set off, the backward point fielder hit he stumps, the ball ricocheted, and Hayden got a second run.Ouch and out
Parthiv, into the side because of MS Dhoni’s injury, had a muted game. The first ball of the third over, bowled by Nannes, was full, straight and fast, and the yorker thudded into Parthiv’s pads. Surprised by the pace and swing, he lost balance and stooped over. Still in a daze, Parthiv set off for a non-existent single, but Hayden waved him back vehemently. It was too late, however, because de Villiers took out the stumps. It seemed Parthiv was still smarting from the yorker that thudded into his foot.Operation Mongoose
Finally we got to see what all the fuss was about. Hayden swung Pradeep Sangwan away for his fourth boundary and promptly called for Chennai’s 12th man to bring out the Mongoose bat. A single and a dot ball later, the Mongoose was on the loose as Hayden tonked three fours and a six in four deliveries. Hayden had roared back into form. The little thing worked well against spin too, as Dilshan found out when his first over went for 21 runs, including three sixes. The bullying continued until Hayden was out for an audacious 93 from 43 balls. It was an auspicious debut.

EFC must avoid Mourinho appointment

Everton are once again on the hunt for a new permanent manager with Duncan Ferguson having to hold the fort on a temporary basis in his latest caretaker role after the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

Before even officially being appointed at Goodison Park, protests began from Toffees fans against the former Liverpool manager.

With just seven wins, four draws and 11 defeats in the 22 games he had in charge of Everton across all competitions with the latest being a disheartening 2-1 defeat against Dean Smith’s relegation battling Norwich City at Carrow Road, it’s safe to say that Benitez’s second spell of managing in Merseyside did not go too well, thus leaving Ferguson to pick up the pieces and steady the ship.

While Farhad Moshiri is on the lookout for a new permanent manager for his side, there has, unsurprisingly, been a significant number of names linked with the position.

One name that has been mentioned with the role that a lot of Premier League followers will be familiar with is AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite having success managing in England in the past, mostly with Chelsea where he won three Premier League titles and one FA Cup across two spells in charge of the west London club as well as winning the Europa League with Manchester United, things haven’t always been smooth-sailing for the 58-year-old.

Having admitted to being “arrogant” during his early days of managing in England, there have been occasions where claims have emerged suggesting that he had lost the dressing room during his time at Tottenham and United.

Given the drama that Mourinho has been involved in during his previous spells at clubs in the Premier League, like having rocky relationships at United with the likes of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, he could end up being another version of Benitez; somebody who arrives with previous experience of managing in the Premier League and at top clubs, but ultimately dragging Everton towards the relegation zone and falling out with players, as the Spaniard did with Lucas Digne.

Also, in a recent poll run by Football FanCast, it seems as though 77% of voters think that Mourinho would not be a good appointment for Everton, further suggesting that the Toffees should be looking elsewhere for their new permanent manager instead of risking a potential disaster at the helm.

In other news: Moshiri must appoint “perfect” 46 y/o as next EFC manager, he’s miles better than Rafa – opinion

I have worked really hard for comeback – Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla, the Kings XI Punjab legspinner who has made a comeback into the Indian team for the World Twenty20 in the West Indies, is eager to grab the opportunity and cement his place in the team

Piyush Chawla: “Now that the selectors have chosen me for the job, I need to deliver the goods and make a long-lasting impression”•Indian Premier League

Piyush Chawla, the Kings XI Punjab legspinner who has made a comeback into the Indian team for the World Twenty20 in the West Indies, is eager to grab the opportunity and cement his place in the national side.”I have worked really hard during the last one-and-a-half years to earn my comeback. Now that the selectors have chosen me for the job, I need to deliver the goods and make a long-lasting impression. I want to be part of the Indian team for a longer period and for that the World Twenty20 will be the most important tournament for me. The competition is tough but I need to stand out,” Chawla told PTI.Chawla was pleased with his form in the IPL, where he picked 12 wickets in Punjab’s 14 league games. “I enjoyed bowling on the Indian tracks as I was able to extract turn from the wickets and was happy to deceive the batsmen in the air. I am in fine form and bowling with rhythm. The IPL was only a dress-rehearsal for the World Twenty20,” he said.Chawla was confident that the pitches in the West Indies would aid spin. “I have never played in the West Indies. But I have been told that the Caribbean wickets are quite similar to the Indian ones. So, I am quite keen on bowling there. I have had a good domestic seasons but my IPL form will give me the required boost and confidence,” he said.Chawla was excited by the prospect of playing a support role to first-choice spinner Harbhajan Singh during the tournament. “I have had the opportunity of bowling with Harbhajan Singh on several occasions. I remember bowling alongside him in Australia in 2008. I was selected with Bhajji when we won the first World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, but unfortunately got injured. I hope the combination can work for India.”The World Twenty20 begins five days after the finals of the IPL, raising the issue of fatigue, but Chawla believed that it would not be a problem. “I don’t think so [that fatigue will have an impact]. Our top players like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan are in top form so I think this will help them in the West Indies because we won’t have to start from the scratch. Also we have had closer look at our opposition players, so it will help us in a big way,” Chawla said.

West Brom fume at Andy Carroll move

A number of West Brom supporters are fuming after John Percy confirmed that Andy Carroll is set to have a medical ahead of a loan move to the Hawthorns.

The Baggies suffered a hugely disappointing result in midweek, losing 2-0 at home to Preston to further damage their Championship automatic promotion hopes.

Valerien Ismael’s side looked toothless in attack and it highlighted the need for January reinforcements, following Daryl Dike’s hamstring injury.

One player who has been linked with a move to West Brom this month is Carroll and it now looks as though the transfer will go through, following a key update.

According to the reliable Percy’s post on Twitter, the former England international is set to undergo a medical on Friday, prior to completing a loan move until the end of the season.

Carroll has scored only twice all season, so it’s hardly a surprise fans are underwhelmed.

A chanceless century from James Hildreth at Taunton put Somerset into a strong position in their County Championship match against Warwickshire who are 52 runs behind with seven second innings wickets remaining.Hildreth, who was on 35 overnight, opened his account for the day with a crisply hit cover drive off the fifth delivery of the day bowled by Chris Woakes after the home side had resumed day two on 145 for three off 46 overs. The right-hander continued to dominate early proceedings and moved to his 50 with two to midwicket off Woakes. At the other end Arul Suppiah, who started on 61, had moved onto 64 when he edged a lifting ball from Andrew Miller to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose. The two former Millfield students added 86 runs between them for the fourth wicket in 27 overs. Hildreth was joined by Jos Buttler, who survived a confident appeal for leg before wicket by Imran Tahir in the 57th over before bringing up the Somerset 200 in the 61st.With the total on 210 for 4 the introduction of Darren Maddy into to the attack from the Old Pavilion End for the 65th over considerably changed the complexion of the morning session. In his fourth over, Maddy accounted for Buttler caught behind by Ambrose for 24, with the total on 229 and next over he had Peter Trego caught at slip as he attempted to drive.Hildreth continued with his rich vein of form and took runs with ease and by the lunch interval the score had moved onto 236 for 6, with Hildreth unbeaten on 98. Off the last ball of the first over after the break Hildreth went to his hundred when he pulled Maddy to the midwicket boundary. This was the 25-year-old’s third Championship century of the season and came off 169 balls and included 12 fours. Ben Phillips was out to the first ball of the next over, caught by keeper Ambrose off Rikki Clarke with the total on 240, which brought Alfonso Thomas to the wicket.Over the course of the next 13 overs Thomas helped to add 50 runs for the eighth wicket before Hildreth was eventually dismissed on 131 when he top edged Boyd Rankin to long leg. During his innings Hildreth faced 198 balls and hit 17 fours. There was no further addition to the Somerset score following Hildreth’s departure as Miller accounted for both Murali Kartik and Charl Willoughby in the same over and Somerset were dismissed for 290.Miller was the pick of the Warwickshire attack, ending with five for 72 off his 22 overs, eight of which were maidens, while Maddy ended with two for 24 off his 14.Facing a deficit of 163 batting for a second time, Warwickshire lost skipper Ian Westwood to the fifth ball of the innings when he top edged Willoughby to Phillips at fine leg. Maddy and Varun Chopra batted confidently and looked set to see the day out before both departed in quick succession. In the 35th over with the total one run short of 100 Maddy was leg before to Kartik for 61, which came off 105 balls and included eight fours. Six balls later with the score still on 99 Craig Kieswetter took a sharp chance off Chopra standing up to Phillips. Clarke and Jim Troughton remained together until the close by which time the score had moved onto 111 for 3.

AVFC must unleash Louie Barry

Aston Villa had a particularly busy January transfer window, more so than most clubs across the Premier League in terms of bringing new players in and moving some of their current ones out elsewhere.

On the chalkboard

One player that was on the move last month was 18-year-old striker Louie Barry, who after spending the first half of the season on loan with Ipswich Town, made the move to Swindon Town on another loan deal until the end of the season.

Villa signed the teenager back in the 2020 January transfer window from Barcelona’s U19 side in a deal worth a reported fee of around £880k. Since then, the striker has gone on to make 28 appearances across the club’s U18 and U23 sides, scoring 22 goals in the process, showing the attacking talents he has in his locker.

The youngster has also made one senior appearance in a Villa shirt where he managed to grab a goal against Liverpool in the 4-1 FA Cup defeat back in January last year, which was described as a “perfect finish” by Michael Owen, proving that he is not only capable of scoring regularly at youth level, but also against tough senior opposition.

It was a remarkable accomplishment, one that had Villa Park rocking and indeed, should he get a sustained chance in the senior setup, this is something he could replicate.

With just six appearances for Ipswich since the start of the season, it’s safe to say that his time was being wasted at the League One side and that it was wise of Villa to take him back and move him on to Swindon, where he has already made two appearances.

Looking beyond this season, Steven Gerrard has the chance to give Barry his first real taste of what it’s like to be in and around the first team throughout pre-season in the summer and then give him some regular minutes in the team once their next campaign begins.

Given the goalscoring knack that the youngster seems to have and has shown on the pitch when given the chance to play at Villa, he certainly has the ability to raise the roof at Villa Park and get the fans cheering. However, he will need to evolve his game and adapt to the Premier League as a young player having worked his way through the youth ranks at Bodymoor Heath.

With that in mind, if summer signing Danny Ings doesn’t start to score regularly this season or keep his fitness levels up after missing some games earlier in the campaign, he could be in danger of having Barry take his place in the team in the future, especially if he can show what he’s capable of at Swindon in the meantime.
