South Australia were set 351 for victory after declaring their first innings 152 behind Western Australia in the hope of manufacturing a result in Adelaide. After a slow second day, things livened up on the third with the Redbacks stopping at 6 for 249 at lunch, with Michael Klinger unbeaten on 109, before Shaun Marsh raced to a timely century as the Warriors posted 2 for 198.The hosts were 0 for 30 after 15 overs at stumps, sitting in the opposite position to last week when they lost to Victoria after controlling the first three days. They can forget that embarrassment with another 321 runs on the final day.Marsh, who scored 82 in the first innings, has been mentioned as a possible batting candidate for the Test team, which may lose Ricky Ponting for Melbourne, and his unbeaten 108 will be noted even though it came in setting up the declaration. The captain Adam Voges chipped in with 58 after Peter George had taken both the wickets to fall.Klinger’s marathon crawl continued during the first session as he moved from his overnight 64 to 109 at lunch. He spent 287 balls and almost six hours working on his innings and it was hard to tell whether he was responsible for holding the game back or keeping his side in it. The captain Graham Manou changed the tempo of the match with his declaration and has a chance to push for six points.

Arsenal fans slam Elneny vs Sunderland

Many Arsenal fans were left slamming the display of Mohamed Elneny despite their 5-1 win at home to Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

It was a convincing victory for Mikel Arteta’s team in the end at the Emirates Stadium, as Eddie Nketiah grabbed himself a hat-trick, while Nicolas Pepe and debutant Charlie Patino also found themselves on the scoresheet.

However, a lot of Gooners were unimpressed with Elneny’s performance, as he struggled at times to be the anchor at the base of the midfield, losing out on all three of his duels, while he also failed to make a single interception or tackle in the game (SofaScore).

The Egypt international also failed to make any key passes (SofaScore), in what was a shaky night for him individually.

Lazy days gone for hard-working Clarke

As Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting sat together in Hobart, contemplating their 231-run stand, they looked happier than they have for some time

As Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting sat together after the first day in Hobart, contemplating their 231-run stand, they looked happier than they have for some time. There was banter, they interrupted each other with witty quips, and they both sat back in their chairs with the satisfied air of men who can look back on their work and be proud of their accomplishments.Australia’s captain and vice-captain have guided the developing side through a successful summer but for each of them, there have been individual hurdles that weren’t overcome until today. Ponting has struggled against the short ball and his 137 not out ended an uncharacteristically long period without a century, which stretched back to early in the Ashes tour.Clarke’s problems have included more personal issues – a scathing tabloid newspaper article at the start of the summer called him a tosser and criticised the way he was perceived, and he was unfairly branded as over-rated. On the field, runs didn’t flow as freely as they had during his productive Ashes series. For the man who will be Australia’s next captain, two fifties early in the season weren’t enough of a return to satisfy him and he conceded he had been lazy on several occasions this summer.”I’ve played some undisciplined shots, I guess, over the last few games,” Clarke said after his unbeaten 111. “I thought I batted pretty well against West Indies. I was a little bit lazy a couple of times there as well. I don’t really know. I would say I’ve been a little bit lazy, but I’ve been working hard, I’ve been training hard throughout the summer, so it’s good to finally get threefigures.”There was no doubt about his work-rate at Bellerive Oval, where overcast conditions, a slowish surface and quality bowling from Pakistan made the first session hard going. Clarke was beaten outside off stump several times and took a little while to get moving but unlike Ponting, who was dropped from his fourth ball, Clarke didn’t offer a chance and helped Australia recover from 3 for 71 to 3 for 302 at stumps.”That’s your job when you bat No. 5,” Clarke said. “The guys in front of you generally do the hard work and you come in when the ball is pretty old and pretty flat, and cash in. But on days like today there was a little bit in the wicket and I had to work hard early. Any time you make a hundred for your country it’s very satisfying.”Although Clarke insists he isn’t fazed about staying down the order, he is clearly enjoying the seniority involved with the vice-captaincy. His innings featured typical Clarke footwork against the spinners and his Test average ticked over 50 during the day. When he reached his hundred he kissed the crest of his helmet, and he later joked that Ponting, who did the same for the first time in his career, “copied me – good boy!” Ponting took the jibe good-naturedly. By stumps, nothing could bother either of them.

Volantes: Petros, Jucilei e Araruna
Meias: Lucas Fernandes, Shaylon e Thomaz
Atacantes: Lucas Pratto, Gilberto, Marcos Guilherme, Marcinho, Brenner, Paulo Bóia e Denilson

Patterson could solve big Everton issue

Everton have a number of ageing players in their squad, which has an average age of 28.1, and Rafael Benitez will likely be looking to add new players in the transfer window to build for the future.

There is one player who has been heavily linked with the Toffees who could solve a substantial issue for the manager.

What’s the word?

Rangers youngster Nathan Patterson continues to be linked with a move to Everton, and now former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton has weighed in on the potential signing for the Toffees, telling Football Insider: “We’re talking £10million-plus. He’s not playing, it doesn’t look like Tavernier is going to go anywhere anytime soon.

“I think you’re looking at probably £10million plus add-ons. I know he’s not held down a regular place in the Rangers team but we’ve seen, given the opportunity, he can play at a high level.

“He’s played in European competitions, he’s an international player. Obviously, what he can become in the future, the talent is there for everybody to see.”

The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances for Rangers so far this season across all competitions and has featured in the Scotland national team, scoring his first goal for his country in November against Moldova. He also set up Che Adam’s second goal in the 2-0 win which clinched a place in the World Cup play-offs.

Scotland team-mate Adams showered the defender with praise after the game against Moldova, saying: “Nathan’s an amazing player and a great guy off the pitch so I’m delighted for him.

“He’s a good young prospect coming through for the nation and hopefully he can continue and keep adding goals as well.”

Benitez could solve big issue with Patterson

Everton captain Seamus Coleman is now 33 and will be out of contract in 18 months’ time, so Benitez will be looking for a reliable and consistent right-back who can come into the fold at Goodison Park and take over from the £3.15m-rated Irishman, who has 363 appearances over 13 seasons, with the manager likely to begin phasing the defender out of the starting line-up in the near future.

If Patterson does join in January he would have the perfect opportunity to work with a hugely experienced right-back in Coleman, which could be highly beneficial to his development in succeeding the 33-year-old when he ends his lengthy Merseyside stay.

Signing Patterson would be great for both him and Everton, allowing Benitez to implement a freshness to a crucial area of the pitch, and to replace someone in Coleman who is perhaps turning into a liability given his defensive lapses of late.

Rafa could sign Brennan Johnson

Everton have already signed two young players in this transfer window, with 20-year-old Nathan Patterson and 22-year-old Vitaliy Mykolenko joining the squad this week, and Rafa Benitez could be set to sign his next youngster.

What’s the word?

The MailOnline has reported that Everton are keeping their eye on Nottingham Forest forward, Brennan Johnson after he has impressed in the Championship so far this season.

The report suggests that Forest would like to keep the youngster with them, but a large bid from a Premier League club would be hard to ignore, with both Brentford, Tottenham and West Ham also named as potential suitors for Johnson, with the Championship club reportedly setting a £14m valuation.

Johnson was once hailed by Glenn Murray speaking in an interview on Sky Sports:

“For me, Brennan, he just looks special. He just looks a cut above and he’s destined for the top.”

The youngster’s contract doesn’t end with his current club until 2023, and  Forest are currently chasing a playoff position, six points off the mark so they may feel that he is worth more to the club’s future than an offer a club could make for him in the January transfer window.

Benitez must secure the signing

Johnson has been impressing Premier League clubs with his performances this season, with five goals and four assists for his Championship side in 25 appearances.

The youngster is no one-season wonder either, and enjoyed a successful 2020/21 season at Lincoln City during a loan spell, where he scored 13 goals and bagged 14 assists in 48 appearances, which sees his senior tally already at an inspiring 18 strikes.

Signing young players who can offer a future worth to their price tag should be a priority for the Everton manager, as he can change the path the Toffees have been on with reckless spending.

The club needs to continue to buy young players to build a team for the future that can develop together, bringing the average age of the team down, which is currently one of the highest in the league at an average of 28-years-old.

Benitez will have the opportunity to distract fans from the poor performances in the Premier League this season, by leading his side out at Goodison Park with a good performance in the FA Cup this weekend.

After that, they must ensure that Johnson becomes a member of their team. Blessed with plenty of potential, he certainly looks like a very attractive acquisition this winter.
