Graham Manou will have no chance to rest after flying home from India when he joins his South Australia team-mates for Saturday’s FR Cup match against Queensland in Alice Springs. Manou played his first four ODIs as a replacement for Tim Paine, taking five catches, but will quickly slip back into his domestic leadership duties for the game against the competition leaders.Cullen Bailey and Kane Richardson also come in for South Australia, who are taking the match out of their region to promote the game, and Richardson could play a major fixture in his home state of the Northern Territory for the first time. The Redbacks, who took first-innings points in the Sheffield Shield fixture between the sides, named a 13-man squad for the trip, with Tim Ludeman, the stand-in gloveman, and James Smith missing out.Mark Cosgrove remains on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury while Chris Duval is still suffering a stomach problem. Queensland will wait until Friday to finalise their team following an injury to Chris Swan, who has been struggling with a groin complaint, during the Shield game.South Australia squad Daniel Harris, Michael Klinger, Tom Cooper, Graham Manou (capt, wk), Cameron Borgas, Aaron O’Brien, Dan Christian, Cullen Bailey, Matthew Weeks, Kane Richardson, Jake Haberfield, Peter George, Shaun Tait.

Celtic could sign PL man next summer

Celtic could make Cameron Carter-Vickers’ move a permanent one next summer but a January deal looks unlikely, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers shining on loan

The 23-year-old joined the Hoops on loan from Tottenham back in the summer, having struggled to earn playing time in north London.

Carter-Vickers has impressed for Celtic in the months since arriving, starting 11 Scottish Premiership matches and even being hailed as ‘excellent’ by club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

The 6 foot 1 defender’s current Spurs deal expires in the summer of 2023, so they may be open to selling him in 2022 rather than losing him on a free transfer the following year.

The Latest: Permanent move next summer?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed a permanent January switch is off the table but he could head to Parkhead for good next summer:

“It definitely won’t happen in January. I think in the summer, depending on where Celtic are and whether they’ve won the title and get automatic qualification to the Champions League, there might be a possibility of doing that one.”

The Verdict: No-brainer for Hoops

Carter-Vickers has proved his worth so far this season, evidenced by the praise from Sir Kenny, meaning snapping him up on a permanent deal makes perfect sense moving forward.

At 23, he still has so much maturing to do in the coming years, so he could grow into an even more formidable defender for Ange Postecoglou’s side, and perhaps land the club a considerable profit down the line if he moves on.

Virgil van Dijk was about to turn 22 when he joined Celtic, for example, and he has since become a legendary figure in the British game, not that Carter-Vickers will necessarily ever reach his heights.

The Spurs man has enjoyed a monstrous average of 3.8 aerial duels per game in the league this season however – the second-most of any Hoops player, behind Carl Stasrfelt (4.3) – while no individual has more than his average of 4.7 clearances per match.

In other news, a foreign source has made a big Celtic transfer claim. Read more here.

Leeds urged to sign a striker in January

Former England international Carlton Palmer has urged Leeds United to sign a new striker in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s injury problems

The Whites have had a season to forget so far in 2021/22, languishing in 15th place in the Premier League and struggling to repeat last year’s efforts.

A big reason for that has been Patrick Bamford’s lack of availability, with the striker struggling with injuries throughout the campaign.

With the January window now of the horizon, it could be that Marcelo Bielsa delves into the market for attacking reinforcements, given Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo have combined for just three top flight goals.

The Latest: Palmer makes transfer plea

Someone who thinks that needs to be the case is former Leeds man Palmer, who told Give Me Sport that a fresh face is required in the final third, as the Whites look to turn their season around:

“They’ve been struggling for goals, so I still think it’s an area that Leeds need to address in the transfer window, they need to bring a striker in.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-27/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: New striker must happen

There has been an evident lack of firepower from Leeds this season, with 17 goals scored after 16 league matches, compared to 30 this time last year. If you take out Raphinha’s seven strikes, the rest of the squad have barely broken double digits.

That highlights the need to bring in another striker, with too much pressure on Bamford and the Brazilian to stay fit and be the constant source of goals – if the latter suffers any sort of injury the squad looks perilously thin.

It would negligent if January drifted by without a new signing in that area, potentially putting Leeds at risk in the relegation scrap.

Vettori's leading from the front – Brendon McCullum

Only 36 overs were possible in Dunedin on a day blighted by rain and bad light but, in that time, New Zealand strengthened their grip on the first Test. Their progress centred around a 164-run stand between Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum, and later the wicketkeeper praised his captain’s leadership from the front.”We were in a pretty dicey sort of position at 211 for 6 so to be able to combine in that sort of partnership and get our team through to four sessions [ending at to 404 for 8] was something that we aimed for at the start of the game,” McCullum said after a wet day. “To manage to do that was very satisfying. It would have been nice to have gone on and scored a hundred at my home ground but it wasn’t to be.”McCullum’s innings was cut short by a yorker from Umar Gul in the last over before the lunch break, during a spell the New Zealand wicketkeeper thought was Gul’s best of the game. “He certainly had a bit more gas on and managed to get a bit more bounce too,” McCullum said.Gul also returned after the long rain delay to deny Vettori a hundred, inducing an edge to the wicketkeeper when the New Zealand captain was on 99. It would have been Vettori’s fifth Test hundred, and a back-to-back one as well at No. 8. During his innings, Vettori also went past Shane Warne’s aggregate of 2005 runs to become the most prolific No. 8 in Tests.”He’s [Vettori] happy with the position we’re in, and he’s obviously happy with the contribution he’s made, but he’s disappointed to miss out on what would have been a brilliant Test hundred,” McCullum said. “He is certainly leading from the front.”Only one ball was bowled after Vettori’s dismissal before bad light forced the players off the University Oval but McCullum felt a result was still possible despite losing over three and a half hours of play. “There are still three days to go in the game, and we’ve got a sizeable first-innings total, so if we bowl well then hopefully we’ll give ourselves a real opportunity,” he said. “The wicket is pretty good but it certainly does have a little bit in it if you bend your back.”We’ve obviously got to strike them pretty early to give ourselves a real strong chance but we’ve got the bowlers to do it so I think we can.”

Confira as soluções apresentadas:

– Adriana Behar, ex-jogadora de vôlei de praia e medalhista olímpica;
– Ana Luiza Santos de Andrade, estudante de 12 anos, que defende igualdade para meninos e meninas no futebol;
– Beatriz Vaz e Silva, jogadora de futebol, que fez parte da seleção brasileira de futebol por quatro anos;
– Claudianny Drika, treinadora de futebol, que trabalha com jovens de uma comunidade carente no Rio;
– Fernanda Nunes, remadora olímpica e blogueira;
– Luiza Travassos, estudante de 13 anos, que conta seu dia a dia como jogadora feminina de futebol nas redes sociais;
– Maíra Liguori, diretora da ONG Think Olga, dedicada a capacitar as mulheres compartilhando informações;
– MC Soffia, rapper de 13 anos, que tem cantado sobre o empoderamento das garotas negras desde os seis anos de idade;

Lucas Silva substitui o argentino.

O time titular no início do treino contou com Fábio; Ezequiel, Manoel, Murilo e Diogo Barbosa; Henrique, Lucas Silva, Robinho e Rafinha; Thiago Neves e Arrascaeta.

O time do início da atividade tinha Rafael; Galhardo, Lennon, Arthur e Bryan; Lucas Romero, Nonoca, Messidoro e Elber; Alisson e Rafael Marques.

Tillakaratne Dilshan masterminds easy victory

Tillakaratne Dilshan made 2009 his own, scoring ten centuries in all forms, and he didn’t start too badly in the new year either, compiling another robust ton to guide Sri Lanka to an easy win in the tri-series opener. Bangladesh gave a good account of themselves with the bat in getting to 260, but their bowlers lost the battle against Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and the dew.Defending totals under lights will pose a challenge to all teams in this competition, with the dew factor kicking in, and tonight, Bangladesh were bitten after losing the toss. Shakib Al Hasan said this was a “minimum 250” wicket and his batsmen obliged. Early into the Sri Lankan chase, they realised that they were at least 30 short.The opening over by the debutant Shafiul Islam was a sign of things to come, as he leaked ten runs. Upul Tharanga was in fine touch, caressing the ball square of the wicket on the off side with very little effort. Bangladesh had packed the off-side field to restrict the left-handers but both Tharanga and Sangakkara managed to pierce them.However, Tharanga threw it away, chasing a delivery angled across him. Sangakkara was very harsh on anything wide of the off stump and played some delightful drives along the ground. The instinctive Dilshan didn’t mind hitting it in the air, clearing his back leg to pull and clip it over midwicket. In the process, he went past 4000 runs in ODIs.Shakib wasn’t amused. Early in the chapter, he showed his frustration by placing his hands on his head, without a clue about what to do. He brought himself on in the sixth over after his seamers had already leaked 52. Not that the introduction of spin made any difference. Shakib, Abdur Razzak and Mahmudullah were impeded by the dew, which didn’t allow them to grip the ball properly.They often dropped it flat and quick, in order to get the ball to skid through, but Sangakkara and Dilshan managed to get on top of them, rocking on the backfoot and crashing it past the infield. Both proceeded towards their half-centuries at the same pace, reaching their milestones in the 21st over, bowled by Razzak.Sangakkara was also heading towards a century but fell off a very loose shot, tamely edging Shafiul to the wicketkeeper. Dilshan continued to grind the opposition, nudging it in the gaps for singles and pounding the off boundary. He was harsh on anything short and rendered the spinners impotent with his sweeps. He brought up his hundred with a slash off Mohammad Ashraful past point. The Bangladesh fielding too wasn’t upto the mark, and those extra runs only hastened Sri Lanka’s progress.Dilshan suffered a scare when he suffered a groin strain while turning for a second run. Sangakkara came out as a runner and hung around almost till the very end, before a full-blooded pull by Dilshan landed in Naeem Islam’s hands at short midwicket. Dilshan walked off for 104 and Sri Lanka will wait on his fitness for their second game tomorrow against India. Thilan Samaraweera then sealed what was a very one-sided period of play under lights.It took Bangladesh a lot of hard work and concentration to get to a formidable score. It was not without some anxious moments though, when the top order pushed the self-destruct button to lose four wickets for the addition of nine runs. The score went from 65 for 0 to 74 for 4 primarily through irresponsible batting. Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib all perished in that manner, trying to clear the infield when it really wasn’t required. Raqibul Hasan fell to a stunning one-handed take by Samaraweera at second slip and that was the only top order wicket which wasn’t gifted away.By the 17th over, Bangladesh had to start all over. Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim scripted a steady and patient recovery with dogged resistance. Ashraful was forced to look for the singles, which the pair managed to do fairly easily during their 58-run stand for the fifth wicket. They were more focused on accumulation rather than domination.Ashraful didn’t change gears after Mushfiqur departed and continued grafting against the spinners, this time with Mahmudullah for company. Incredibly, Ashraful picked up his first boundary off his 37th ball – a loft over extra cover off Thilina Kandamby – in sharp contrast to the way he normally plays. It’s a style of play he’s getting used to, after being criticised time and again in his career for throwing his wicket away after making a start.His 75 was significant mainly because it kept the Sri Lankans at bay, helped the innings last the entire 50 overs, something Bangladesh have struggled to do in the past. Naeem’s final-over fireworks (off Suranga Lakmal) pushed the score past 250 and as the Bangladesh players walked off in satisfaction, there was hope of a contest. An hour and a half later, those smiles vanished.

Leeds’ interest in Lanzini ‘rebuffed’

West Ham have ‘rebuffed’ Leeds United’s interest in Manuel Lanzini, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

The Lowdown: Lanzini struggles for playing time

The Hammers have enjoyed an impressive season to date but the 28-year-old has failed to force his way into David Moyes’ plans on a regular basis.

Lanzini has only started three Premier League matches so far in 2021/22, scoring twice and registering one assist in that time.

With Leeds looking for potential January reinforcements, it seems as though Leeds are eyeing up a move for the Argentine next month, who scored the Irons’ goal of the season last term with a stunning late equaliser against Tottenham.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Leeds offer rejected

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham have turned down ‘a number of enquiries’ for Lanzini, with the Whites one of the clubs mentioned.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton and Southampton are all seen as possible suitors, too, with the midfielder’s current Hammers deal expiring in the summer of 2023, meaning they are running out of time to make a significant transfer fee on a sale.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-29/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Strong option for Whites

Lanzini may not be a vital player for West Ham currently but he is someone who could make a big difference at Leeds, adding guile in the middle of the park.

The five-cap Argentina international has chipped in with 25 goals and assists apiece in 177 Hammers appearances, and with the Whites struggling for goals, he can add a sprinkling of magic in the final third.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have only scored 18 goals in as many league games this season, highlighting the need for some creative magic in the middle of the park, and Lanzini can be that man, having been hailed as ‘wonderful’ by Darren Bent in the past.

In other news, Leeds are set to make an offer for one player. Find out who it is here.
