Swann soars as Notts romp to victory

Lancashire complete Roses double with win at Headingley

Graeme Swann warmed up for England duty in some style by swiping an incredible 90 not out from 47 balls against Derbyshire to turn a tricky Nottinghamshire run-chase into a stroll under the floodlights at Derby. Swann came to the crease in the first over of the innings, following the dismissal of Ali Brown, and was still there when the match ended 14.4 overs later, with 13 fours and two sixes to his name. Adam Voges (45 from 30 balls) shared in an unbroken 112-run stand for the third wicket and only Graham Wagg, with 2 for 41, was able to break through for Derbyshire. At the halfway mark, their total of 158 for 5 seemed a stiff challenge, thanks to half-centuries for Wavell Hinds and Greg Smith. But Swann’s confidence at present is soaring.Lancashire completed an impressive Roses double by securing their second victory in a week against Yorkshire, and this time in enemy territory at Headingley. Sajid Mahmood and Glen Chapple combined well with two cheap wickets apiece to keep Yorkshire’s batting under wraps, and only their top-scorer, Jacques Rudolph, managed more than a run a ball, falling eventually to Gary Keedy for 38 from 33 balls. In reply, chasing a meagre 112, Paul Horton chimed in with 29 from 16 balls, leaving Steven Croft to ease Lancashire over the line by five wickets with an unbeaten 40 from 49.Jacques du Toit was Leicestershire’s last-gasp hero at Chester-le-Street, as he wrapped up a seven-wicket victory by cracking a six and a four off the last two balls of the match to sneak his side past Durham. Chasing 145 for victory, Leicestershire seemed to have lost their way despite an 82-run stand for the third wicket between Paul Nixon and James Allenby. When Paul Collingwood removed Allenby for 53, 11 runs were still required, but du Toit needed just three runs to rattle those off to deliver his team’s first victory of the competition. Their other star of the night was the teenage seamer, Alex Wyatt, who took 3 for 14 on his Twenty20 debut.South DivisionMiddlesex’s faltering defence of the Twenty20 Cup continued against Kent – the team they defeated in last season’s final at the Rose Bowl – with a four-wicket defeat at Canterbury. Batting first, Middlesex never came to terms with the new-ball threat of Robbie Joseph, who strangled their bid for momentum with 2 for 14 in four overs. The top five managed two fours between them, and even Tyron Henderson was limited to a solitary six as he top-scored with 31 from 38 balls. A target of 105 never looked like being enough, not even when Alan Richardson bagged both openers with six runs on the board. Martin van Jaarsveld and Ryan McLaren kept the chase on course as Kent eased home with 10 balls to spare.Essex manoeuvred themselves towards the top of the South Division table with a thrilling final-over victory over Surrey at Chelmsford. After the late dismissals of Matt Walker and Ryan ten Doeschate, Grant Flower hit the winning boundary with one delivery remaining, but it was Ravi Bopara who ignited the run-chase with 53 from 41 balls. Surrey’s total of 165 for 5 was built around a fantastic unbeaten 81 from 60 balls from their opener Scott Newman, but it was not enough.Chris Nash made easy work of Hampshire’s modest total of 122 for 7, cruising to an unbeaten 56 from 47 balls and sealing the contest with a six, as Sussex picked up their second victory of the competition at Hove. Nash was joined in an unbroken third-wicket stand with Dwayne Smith, who made 31 from 29 balls and had earlier picked up two wickets in his only over of the match. James Kirtley also struck twice in a disciplined bowling performance, and only Michael Carberry, with 36 from 38 balls, was able to hang around long enough to build an innings.Midland/Wales/West DivisionIan Harvey and Riki Wessels turned on the style for Northamptonshire with a pair of hard-hitting half-centuries to bat Glamorgan out of the contest at Wantage Road. Harvey made 64 from 37 balls and Wessels 55 not out from 34, as Northants romped to a commanding score of 195 for 3 in their 20 overs. In reply, Mark Cosgrove replied in kind with a bruising 40 from 22 balls, but he found scant support with Jamie Dalrymple’s 24 from 29 the next highest score. Harvey completed a fine allround match with 3 for 24, while Johan van der Wath – who had earlier clubbed 27 from 13 balls – took 3 for 23. Glamorgan batted out their full 20 overs, but still fell 40 runs short.Craig Spearman’s 51 from 29 balls proved the difference at Taunton, where Gloucestershire picked up their first win of the competition by inflicting Somerset’s their first defeat – by 21 runs. Spearman’s innings contained six fours and a six, and was supported by some sterling cameos from Hamish Marshall and Will Porterfield, who made 27 runs from 15 balls between them, and Richard Dawson, who was unbeaten on 27 from 20 at the end. Chasing 163, Somerset lost Craig Kieswetter and Marcus Trescothick early, and though Justin Langer and Peter Trego threw the bat gamely in the closing stages, they were always behind the asking-rate.Jonathan Trott and Jim Troughton produced a pair of half-centuries to ensure Warwickshire the West Midlands bragging rights against local rivals Worcestershire at Edgbaston. Chasing 149, the pair added 97 for the second wicket to put the result beyond doubt, and Trott was still there at the end with 53 from 48 balls as victory was secured with seven wickets and 10 balls remaining. Earlier Worcestershire had produced a piecemeal innings in which only two men reached double-figures. Daryl Mitchell made 35 from 31 balls, but the undoubted star was the recent England Twenty20 opener, Steve Davies, whose 73 from 48 balls contained nine fours and a six. He eventually fell, however, to Keith Barker, who returned the impressive – and ultimately matchwinning – figures of 4 for 19.

Rangers: Gerrard must axe Ianis Hagi

Rangers travel to face Motherwell on Sunday as they look to retain their lead at the top of the Premiership table.

They are two points ahead of their nearest rivals heading into the gameweek and play a Motherwell side sitting sixth in the league after 11 games. The Steelmen have won four, drawn three and lost four of their matches, but have only won one of their last six.

Steven Gerrard’s side come into the game off the back of a 2-2 draw with Aberdeen on Wednesday night. They fought back from a 2-0 deficit to pick up a point, with Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier netting the goals.

One player who let the 41-year-old down against the Dons was wide midfielder Ianis Hagi. The Romania international struggled throughout the match and it could be time for Gerrard to ruthlessly axe him from the starting XI.

With games coming thick and fast in the Premiership and Europa League, players are not going to be at the very best of their abilities every single time, and that was highlighted in Hagi’s display against Aberdeen.

As per SofaScore, he lost possession of the ball a whopping 23 times and failed to create a single chance for his teammates or register a shot on goal. He also completed just one of his 13 crossing attempts and had a 0% dribble success rate. The winger failed to impose himself on the match and lost the ball far too often, allowing Aberdeen to create more chances for themselves.

This display was not reflective of his overall performances in the Premiership this season. The £5.85m-rated midfielder has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.10, creating 1.1 chances per game and completing 50% of his attempted dribbles, and losing the ball 13.9 times per match. This suggests that he is capable of much better than what he showed on Wednesday, which is why a rest could be beneficial for him.

Hagi’s off-colour showing against Aberdeen should lead to Gerrard axing him from the team as he was not sharp enough to be at his best. The Romanian needs a rest to focus on getting himself 100% ready in training ahead of the European clash with Brondby on Thursday, as his manager will surely not want to overplay him and end up getting another poor performance out of him against Motherwell.

Draw despite brave SLC declaration

With little chance of an out-and-out result, it was rain that brought a premature end to the third day

With little chance of an out-and-out result and rain threatening to mar proceedings, SLC XI captain Thilina Kandamby gave Pakistan their best shot at a win in the tour game, declaring at 137 for 2 and setting the visitors a tempting target of 83. However, a mini-collapse which saw Pakistan lose 4 for 29 put an end to the possibility of an outright result. The Pakistanis would no doubt have their team strategy in place ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, with Fawad Alam looking in good touch and Salman Butt’s welcome return to form. With both Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq failing to impress, Fawad’s success gives Younis Khan a good selection dilemma. The third and final day began with Fawad continuing from where he left off the previous day. Confident strokeplay helped him bring up his half-century in quick time. Suraj Mohamed, who had picked up two catches and taken two crucial wickets on the second day, dismissed overnight batsman Faisal Iqbal in the sixth over of the day and removed Kamran Akmal three balls later. He then caught Razzaq to give Farveez Maharoof his first wicket of the match as Pakistan slid to 322 for 8. But Pakistan rode Fawad’s superb innings, comprising six boundaries, to go past SLC XI’s total and declared 55 runs ahead.Openers Upul Tharanga and Tharanga Parnavitana ensured a steady start for SLC XI, putting on 66. But the introduction of spin yielded immediate results with Saeed Ajmal getting Upul caught behind. But Paranivitana held firm after missing out in the first innings, stringing together a 56-run partnership with wicketkeeper Kaushal Silva. Paranavitana though, was dismissed just short of his fifty, falling to Danish Kaneria before the heavens opened up, and Kandamby spiced up the game.

West Ham linked with Raul de Tomas

West Ham are reportedly set to tussle with Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of in-form Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas.

The Lowdown: Hammers’ superb form continues

The Hammers are in a wonderful place at the moment, excelling under David Moyes and sitting fourth in the Premier League.

Sunday’s 4-1 way away to Aston Villa was another exceptional result, and on current form, there is no reason why they shouldn’t dream of a top-four finish.

Rumoured incoming investment from Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky could lead to more funds being available for new signings, too, only strengthening West Ham’s current position.

The Latest: De Tomas to east London?

According to Fichajes, the Hammers are interested in signing De Tomas, with the 27-year-old in devastating form so far this season, scoring six goals in 11 La Liga games – the same tally as Michail Antonio in the Premier League.

The £10.8m-rated attacker is also reportedly wanted by Leeds and Tottenham, so it may not be straightforward for West Ham to sign him.

The Verdict: Added firepower

There is little to fault about West Ham currently, but a few injuries to key players could potentially expose a lack of squad depth as the season progresses. That is especially the case at centre-forward, where there is no natural senior backup to the in-form Antonio.

Signing De Tomas could help eradicate that issue, with the Spaniard bringing a near-guaranteed goal threat – 34 goals in 64 appearances for Espanyol – and providing competition for the Jamaica international.

He is in the peak years of his career at the moment, and while Leeds and Spurs are good clubs in their own right, West Ham are currently outperforming both of those on the pitch, and possibly off it too assuming that the rumoured Czech investment comes in.

In other news, West Ham have also been linked with a move for a La Liga midfielder. Find out who it is here.

O treino durou 1h40 no total.

– “Acerta o gol!”

Record broken, Ponting focuses on the job ahead

Ricky Ponting climbed to the summit of Australia’s run list but refused to enjoy the view until after the third Test.

Ricky Ponting climbed to the summit of Australia’s run list but refused to enjoy the view until after the third Test. Ponting become the country’s most prolific batsman when he passed Allan Border’s mark of 11,174 during the second morning at Edgbaston and allowed himself a couple of bat raises to celebrate and a hug from Michael Clarke – but nothing more.”Pup was trying to get some emotion out of me in the middle,” Ponting said. “He came down and said: ‘Well done, I’m really proud of you.’ I said: ‘Mate, we’ve got a job to do.’ I waved my bat around a little bit more than I normally do, but it was just straight back into it to get through a tough morning.”Australia started by losing two wickets to the opening two balls, but Ponting wasn’t too bothered by the setbacks and quickly knocked off the eight runs he needed to leapfrog Border. Playing his 134th match, Ponting achieved the milestone in the fourth over of the day after taking only five balls to reach the target, which came with a flicked three through midwicket off Andrew Flintoff.”When I got past the record it was done and dusted really quickly,” he said. “We had to move and get a partnership going, but unfortunately I got out at a bad time.”He was caught behind trying to hook Onions on 38, standing his ground until Aleem Dar gave him out, and walked off with a career haul of 11,188. “There’s a bitter-sweet taste after getting past the record but not getting a big score,” he said.Border’s 16-year, 156-Test career ended in South Africa in 1994 and he retired as the game’s most prolific batsman, an accolade he held until Brian Lara stepped up in Adelaide in 2005-06. “Never did I ever think I’d be breaking Allan Border’s record because so many things have to fall in line for that, and one of those is playing as many games as I have,” Ponting said. “Right at the moment it’s all a bit of a blur.”The legacy of Border’s uncompromising play lives on through the current team, which is now suffering like some of Border’s teams. “He was known as a really tough competitor and always playing the captain’s innings when required,” Ponting said. “He typified what it was to be an Australian cricketer back then.”He was hard-nosed and as tough as anyone who played the game. When the cricket was at its toughest, he stood up to be counted. That was a trademark of the Australian teams – and still is.”Border said Ponting was a worthy holder of the mantle. “Clearly, I am a great admirer, having been involved in Ricky’s selection in many great Australian sides, and having enjoyed watching him closely on more occasions than I can remember as a cricket media commentator as well,” Border said.Ponting’s batting is crucial to his side’s Ashes chances and he knows he must fire over the remaining three Tests to avoid becoming the first Australian captain in more than 100 years to lose twice in England. He started well with 150 in Cardiff but fell for 2 and 38 as Australia were defeated in the second Test at Lord’s.Lara retired with 11,953 runs in 131 Tests and has since been relegated to second by Sachin Tendulkar, who has 12,773 in 159 matches. Australia’s other post-war record holders were Don Bradman (6996) and Greg Chappell (7110).It appeared Ponting would be able to overtake Tendulkar when the Indian’s career seemed to be winding down a couple of years ago, but he has continued to score heavily and will probably take the mark out of Ponting’s reach. Ponting is 34 but when asked earlier in the series if he would be in England for the 2013 tour he joked he would need a wheelchair.
