Knights opened South Africa’s domestic T20 season with a strong batting performance to derail Cape Cobras by 38 runs in Johannesburg on Saturday.Patrick Kruger top scored with a 49-ball 74 as Knights posted 184 for 8 after being sent in to bat. Marchant de Lange’s early strikes crippled Cobras, who were eventually bowled out for 146 in 17.2 overs. In a chase where they needed at least one batsman with a substantial score, the highest was Keegan Petersen’s 39.In comparison, Knights were driven by partnerships, none more important than the 72-run opening stand in 8.5 overs between Kruger and Rudi Second. The wickets of Second and David Miller in quick time raised hopes of a turnaround. But Knights were driven by cameos from Diego Rosier (12-ball 27) and de Lange (11-ball 22) that helped them score 69 off the last seven overs. Amid the carnage, Dane Paterson picked up three wickets, while George Linde and Jason Smith picked up two wickets apiece. In reply, Cobras lost three of their top four – Richard Levi, Cebo Tshiki and Justin Ontong – inside five overs. Kieron Pollard’s dismissal for 5 put more pressure on the middle order. Only Petersen and Linde made 30-plus scores, but by then the chase was all but over.Linde was the penultimate batsman to be dismissed in the 18th over. De Lange picked up three wickets, including that of Levi after he started briskly with four fours and a six, while Kruger took two.

New Liverpool Weapon Could Launch Title Charge

Liverpool's signing of Alexis Mac Allister brings an intangible that will help the club return to title challengers according to Redmen TV presenter Ste Hoare.

The midfielder has joined the Reds from Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee, and Hoare believes it's "important" that the club is getting in a player who "knows the league".

Has Mac Allister joined Liverpool?

Mac Allister has officially signed for Liverpool after a three-and-a-half-year spell on the South Coast with Brighton.

Both clubs have stated that the fee is undisclosed, however, Fabrizio Romano reports that the Reds triggered a release clause in the World Cup winner's contract for just £35m.

The 24-year-old, who will take the number 10 shirt previously worn by Sadio Mane, signed a five-year deal at the club and is the Merseyside outfit's first transfer of the window.

Manager Jurgen Klopp was delighted to get the deal over the line, stating to Liverpool's official club website: "We are adding a very talented, very smart, very technically skilled boy to our squad and this is super news, really it is."

What has Ste Hoare said about the signing?

The Redmen TV presenter was pleased about Mac Allister's arrival, praising the fact that the player is Premier League proven, so most likely won't need a "bedding in period"

Speaking to Football FanCast, Hoare said: "I’m delighted with Mac Allister, Liverpool needs players who can come in and play straight away, we haven’t really got time for a bedding in period.

"Especially if they want to be title winners again and Man City don’t give you a chance they are relentless, so you’ve got to be. I think it’s important we’re getting someone who knows the league coming in."

Can Mac Allister help turn Liverpool back into title winners?

Liverpool had a disappointing 2022/23 campaign, finishing outside the Champions League positions for the first time since the 2015/16 season.

The club has since identified that a midfield overhaul is required to return to their previously high levels, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Reds have scheduled talks with the agents of French midfielders Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone.

Mac Allister brings something that those names mentioned do not possess, which is Premier League experience. The Argentine made 112 appearances for Brighton during his time there, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists.

The midfielder also made six appearances for Argentina en route to the World Cup final, where the diminutive maestro recorded the assist for Angel Di Maria's goal in the first half.

The Europa League side will be hoping that this wealth of experience in not just the Premier League but in high stakes, pressure competitions will mean the 24-year-old can come straight into the starting midfield, which had been a problem position all season due to injuries and poor form.

If Liverpool want to challenge Manchester City for the title next season, they will have to return to their relentless best, and Mac Allister can be a key piece in achieving that.

Newcastle Lead Race To Sign ‘World-Class’ £50m ‘Monster’

Newcastle United have been interested in Leicester City's James Maddison for an age and are now believed to be leading the race for the England international.

What's the latest on James Maddison to Newcastle?

That's according to Sky Sports, who state that while Tottenham Hotspur hold a vested interest in the 26-year-old playmaker, Newcastle are the most likely destination for the relegated outfit's star man, who has just one year left on his current contract.

The Toon attempted to sign him in January and also failed with a £50m bid last summer, but the groundwork forged at this point could be enough to convince Maddison to join the thriving fold on Tyneside.

That same £50m fee could well be required once again, though, given the Foxes have fallen from the Premier League and Magpies technical director Dan Ashworth may be able to whittle the demands down as the transfer window rages on.

How good is James Maddison?

The ultimate testament to the "dangerous" – as hailed by John Bennett – Maddison's abilities is how he has emerged from Leicester's stricken season relatively unscathed, having still exuded confidence and reaped goals and assists in abundance despite relegation from the Premier League.

Scoring ten goals and supplying nine assists from just 28 starting appearances in the top-flight, the one-time Aberdeen loanee's steady flow as a playmaking conduit has affirmed his stature as a first-rate creator, having been hailed as "world-class" by England manager Gareth Southgate.

While he has predominantly operated as a No. 10 this term, occupying space between the bulk of the midfield and the frontline, Maddison's dynamism is perhaps one of the chief reasons manager Eddie Howe is so enamoured with him, having played a wealth of roles and been dubbed a "monster" by journalist Josh Bunting.

It's possible that, given Howe tends to utilise a 4-3-3 attacking formation at St. James' Park, the ace would be played deeper, not quite an orchestrator but perhaps adopting a similar profile to that of Manchester City phenomenon Kevin De Bruyne, who has posted ten goals and 31 assists from 49 matches across all competitions this season as his outfit completed a historic treble.

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne.

As per FBref, the "remarkable" – as praised by Pep Guardiola – Belgian ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 1% for rate of assists, the top 5% for progressive passes and the top 2% for progressive carries per 90.

Maddison, comparatively, ranks among the top 1% for rate of non-penalty goals, rate of assists and shot-creating actions, and the top 11% for progressive carries per 90, though it is worth remembering that his figures are inflated by his predominance to play further up the field.

Despite this, the "magician", as he was called by Statman Dave, clearly flourishes as one of football's most all-encompassing attacking midfielders, and at Newcastle, a burgeoning outfit now awaiting a return to the Champions League after two decades away, he can take the next step in his development and emerge as one of the globe's foremost footballing gems.

Shaun Marsh's special snare at short leg

Australia had lost their first choice for short leg with the dropping of Joe Burns, meaning Marsh went in there for the spinners while Usman Khawaja went “under the lid” for the pacers

Shaun Marsh’s dive to catch a bat and pad chance from Temba Bavuma was a significant moment for Australia for a few reasons, quite apart from being a terrific piece of fielding.Short leg to a spinner is arguably the hardest position in the game in terms of courage and skill, leaving the fielder open to all kinds of punishment and danger when slow bowlers pitch short or the batsman opens his shoulders to slog sweep. As Chris Rogers has recounted in his new book .”I’ve always hated the position. I fielded there a lot as a younger player, particularly for Beau Casson. He mixed great deliveries with loose ones, meaning the short leg could be peppered. During one match at Adelaide Oval for Western Australia, I was struck on the full on my ankle and the ball then ricocheted all the way to midwicket, who proceeded to take the catch. All the players ran to the fielder except for Beau, who ran straight to me, where I lay writhing in pain on the ground.”After numerous blows, I started to dislike playing and would hardly speak when positioned close in. It’s a terrible spot to field and those who criticise these fielders would be better served to keep their mouth shut until they’ve experienced what it is like in there. The best ones are those who don’t fear it and I wasn’t one of them – Rob Quiney is possibly the bravest I’ve seen.”Australia had lost their first choice for short leg with the dropping of Joe Burns, meaning Marsh went in there for the spinners while Usman Khawaja went “under the lid” for the pacers. The intervention to catch Bavuma ended a pesky partnership for South Africa. At the same time it provided a nice bit of nostalgia for Shaun’s father Geoff Marsh, watching from the stands. A decade or three ago he fielded there for Australia in Tests, once claiming a particularly fine catch from the bat and pad of one Ian Botham at the SCG. This take, though, was better.

Spurs Could Ditch Sanchez For £35m "Leader" This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur have recently been linked with a move for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, and while the England international has flattered to deceive for much of his career with the Red Devils, he could be a stellar signing for the Lilywhites.

Signing for United for a staggering £80m in 2019, the 30-year-old has often been subject to intense criticism for his lacklustre defensive displays, but could indeed be offered a lifeline as Ange Postecoglou looks to craft his Spurs team following his recent appointment.

That's according to The Telegraph, which claims that Tottenham could sign the centre-back this summer, though will face competition from Aston Villa and Everton for his services.

Touted at just £35m, he could be an affordable addition to bolster Tottenham's squad as they search for a route back to prominence, though whether he would agree to play his football outside of European competition next term remains to be seen.

Should Tottenham sign Harry Maguire?

It's been a tumultuous journey for Maguire in England's north-west, and despite chalking up 175 appearances and winning the Carabao Cup in February, he has been harangued as a "walking disaster" by reporter Samuel Luckhurst.

However, Maguire boasts many admirable qualities and has remained an integral part of an England side that has tantalised trophy-winning credentials, having earned 55 caps and scoring seven goals, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the Euro 2020 final and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. Indeed, Erik ten Hag labelled him as a "leader" earlier this year.

And as per FBref, the one-time Hull City titan ranks among the top 17% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 9% for progressive carries, the top 11% for blocks and the top 12% for aerials won per 90.

Chelsea target Harry Maguire

The £190k-per-week ace could be the perfect replacement for Davinson Sanchez, who has been at the epicentre of a Spurs defence that has leaked 63 goals in the Premier League this season.

The 26-year-old Colombian played 24 times this season, but only earned eight starts in the Premier League while being linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium of late, having been branded "deadwood" by TalkSport pundit Jamie O'Hara.

Given that Postecoglou will surely be seeking to stamp an iron-clad resolve on his defence to ensure that the seasonal woes do not repeat next year, it is unlikely that he will turn to a defender failing to earn a regular starting berth in that very same stricken team, especially after the £65k-per-week ace has been predicted to "struggle with the playing around from the back" in the Australian manager's possession-centric system by journalist Alasdair Gold.

Maguire, for all his misfortune, is still a solid defender, and with a clean slate, he could have a renaissance to coincide with Spurs' own at a pivotal moment.

Dassanayake urges USA to shed 40-over mentality

USA coach Pubudu Dassanayake has picked the team’s batting as the area in need of the biggest improvement ahead of their opening match in the WCL Division Four

Peter Della Penna20-Oct-2016USA coach Pubudu Dassanayake has picked the team’s batting as the area in need of the biggest improvement, heading into their first match at the World Cricket League Division Four – the ICC’s 50-over tournament for Associates and Affiliates – in Los Angeles. USA lost the first two games in the recently-concluded Auty Cup against Canada, before chasing down 222 to win by two wickets in the final match. Dassanayake said they could have performed better with more consistency in the batting.Santhanam doubtful for WCL Division Four

USA allrounder Srini Santhanam is likely to be ruled out of the WCL Division Four, after a recurrence of the right shoulder injury that has plagued him over the last three years. Santhanam re-injured the shoulder at the five-day national camp in Indianapolis last month. He was fit enough to bowl six overs in USA’s 34-run loss to Canada in the Auty Cup opener, but aggravated the injury when firing in a throw from the boundary, and missed the final two games.
“Srini is definitely injured and he’s not going to be 100% before the tournament, but we are taking medical advice from the physio and Srini’s family doctor,” USA coach Pubudu Dassanayake said. “We are going to wait for those reports and how they advise us, but it looks it’s very doubtful that he’s going to be 100% fit.”

“It’s always good to get a win going into the World Cricket League against Canada, but, overall, we could have done better in the first two games,” Dassanayake told ESPNcricinfo. “Especially in the second game, we had a chance at winning. Overall, we were improving every game. First game, we were very low, did lots of mistakes. Second game, we were better, and [last game] I think bowling and fielding were up there. We want some good performance in the batting, but there are lots of areas to improve.”The batting still needs to settle down. We have a very decent bowling attack. I’m happy about that. Fielding, there’s a few things we need to fix, but I’m not that nervous because the guys are putting a lot of effort, and I’m pretty sure we’ll get there. Batting, when you take the seven batters we have in the squad, they are quality, they can do the job. But, coming out from club cricket to this level may have made a huge impact.”Opening batsman Fahad Babar topped USA’s scoring charts in the Auty Cup with 148 runs, including two half-centuries. But, apart from him, Akeem Dodson was the only member of the original squad to score a fifty in the series. Ravi Timbawala, who came in as a replacement player for Sunday’s match and is currently not a part of USA’s squad for WCL Division Four, had USA’s best score with an unbeaten 73 in Sunday’s win. Incidentally, Elmore Hutchinson, a left-arm medium pacer, topped the batting averages at 59, albeit with two unbeaten knocks of 21 and 37. Dassanayake said the players are still adjusting to the rigours of 50-over cricket, given most of their local leagues are 40-over competitions.”They are used to playing a lot of 40-over cricket, so that mentality has to change. I think they’re working hard towards that, but I would still say that we are slightly behind on those areas. Next 10 days, we’re going to work hard and come to the level we want to be to win this tournament.”Dassanayake also said the team was affected by the absence of Timroy Allen and Ali Khan during the Auty Cup. Allen withdrew to attend to a personal matter, while Khan was nursing a left hamstring strain sustained at a five-day national camp in Indianapolis. Both are expected to return for Division Four, and Dassanayake was sure they’d make an impact.”Timroy is going to be one of the most important players in this tournament for us. The last three games, after Srini [Santhanam] got injured, it was tough for us to balance the team. On Friday, we went with an extra bowler and were a batsman short. [Sunday], we played an extra batsman and were a bowler short. When you go like that, it’s kind of a risk where we don’t know how we’re going to end up. I would say, on Friday, if we had that extra batsman, maybe we would have won that game in that 20 runs.”So, Timroy coming into the team is going to solve a lot of issues. As a top allrounder, he can even bat early in the order, and he can contribute 10 overs. Ali is always, when somebody bowls at 135-plus at this level, is always going to be very effective. In these types of wickets and conditions, he is capable of picking up early wickets and then very good bowling in the death overs. I’m sure both of them are going to make a huge impact by coming into the XI.”Half of the USA squad secured enough time off work to stay on in Los Angeles after the Auty Cup, while the rest went home. They will return to Los Angeles on October 23 for five days of training ahead of their first Division Four game, against Bermuda on October 29. USA will also have a warm-up match on October 25 against a Southern California Cricket Association XI. Dassanayake is hopeful that he can maximise the time he has with the players and translate it into positive results.”Even though we could have done better in the last three games, I’m confident with the talent and ability that I have with these 14 players, and I’m confident going into the tournament,” Dassanayake said. “But in saying that, this team has to do certain things well to win that tournament, and I’m just trying to have time with these players. That’s my toughest job.”

Liverpool: Whelan drops Williams prediction

Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has delivered his verdict regarding the future of Neco Williams at Liverpool.

The lowdown:  Loan sensation

The 21-year-old spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Fulham and helped the London club earn a promotion to the Premier League.

Having previously acted as an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold for the most part, Williams scored twice and provided another two assists in 14 Championship appearances following the January switch.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-33/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As a return to the AXA Training Centre beckons in the coming weeks, the Wales international’s future is bound to be in the spotlight during the summer transfer window and a source close to Craven Cottage has already revealed there is interest in a permanent £12million move.

And with the player valued at just £7.2million by Transfermarkt, Julian Ward would be starting his reign as the new Anfield transfer guru with a hefty 40 per cent mark-up.

The latest: ‘Nice little boost’

Speaking to Football Insider, former BBC pundit and now Leeds United employee Whelan has suggested that selling Williams could be the best move for all parties.

The 47-year-old said: “He’s done a fantastic job at Fulham. He was shown a lot of trust by Marco Silva and Jurgen Klopp. He’s repaid it by playing his part in the title win.

“He’s well worthy of that £12million price tag. I think he put himself on a platform with his performances at Liverpool over the past few seasons. I just can’t see him having a future in that red shirt – for sure.

“If they can get that kind of money for three or four players on the fringe like Williams, wow…that could be a nice little boost to the transfer budget.”

The verdict: Ward’s first move

Although there is little question as to whether Williams is a Premier League level operator having already made 13 top-flight outings in a fledgeling career, the 18-cap Wales ace is unlikely to usurp surefire starter Alexander-Arnold at Anfield and was often overlooked in favour of Joe Gomez and even James Milner.

Therefore, it seems inevitable that the Welshman will seek more regular first-team action this summer having contributed so heavily at Fulham in recent months, particularly in light of Liverpool’s reported pursuit of Aberdeen youngster Calvin Ramsay.

One thing that is definite, new sporting director Ward will be tasked with emulating his predecessor Michael Edwards in extracting the maximum possible fee for outgoings to fund possible signings for Jurgen Klopp’s squad, and it looks like the sale of Williams could be the first.
